We used giving-up densities (GUD) to study patch use decisions of small granivorous passerines throughout the year. We measured GUDs continuously in four sites for a period of 9–10 months per year during 2004 and 2005 in a savannah area in Jos, central Nigeria. The study thus covered a period from the middle of the dry season, through the wet season to the beginning of the next dry season in each year. We placed experimental food patches in both open areas and in cover to investigate possible effects of predation risk and thermal hazard on the foraging behavior of the birds. We found a difference in GUDs between the microhabitats, with a consistently lower GUD in cover throughout the year and for the two years. During both years GUDs followed a pattern coinciding with the seasonal change in local seed availability. An initial decline in GUDs late in the dry season was followed by a steady increase during and after the rains. A similar trend in GUDs observed for both years supports the conclusion that GUDs measure the feeding birds' assessment of environmental quality, possibly in combination with other factors changing predictably during the year. We conclude that food abundance may act with other environmental and ecological factors to affect foraging decisions throughout the year.  相似文献

Summary Biochemical mutants ofTrichophyton mentagrophytes unable to grow on minimum medium (auxotrophs) have been paired. Growth on minimum medium occurred irregularly for many combinations, but turned out to be caused by syntrophism in most cases. Summary A total of 143 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder were tested for lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity against the bladder carcinoma cell line T24. Some of the patients were also tested against MANO (another cell line of transitional cell bladder carcinoma origin), HCV29 (from bladder epithelium, probably transformed in vitro) and/or HT29 (from a colon adenocarcinoma). The patients were divided into a high- or a low-responder group for each cell line. The patients were followed up and the correlation between a high response in the cytotoxicity tests and survival was evaluated using an adaptation of the Mantel-Haenszel statistics. Intranasal infection of CBA/Ca mice with a sublethal dose of A/2 Japan influenza virus 305/57 decreased the blastogenic response to concanavalin A and phytohemagglutinin, and less to lipopolysaccharide andEscherichia coli bacteria. This depression of the blastogenic responses could be transferred from infected donor mice by intravenous injection of 4×107 spleen cells to otherwise untreated syngenic recipient mice. Similar infections with A/Victoria 3/75 and A/Texas 1/77 influenza virus strains caused less depressing effects. Less consistent results were seen with NMRI mice. No impairment of the antibody responses to unrelated protein antigen could be noted after such intranasal influenza infection. In contrast, the IgE antibody response was particularly increased after infection with Texas virus. Some deleterious effects of Victoria and Texas virus infections on the delayed hypersensitivity response to picryl chloride were seen in CBA mice but not in NMRI mice. This immune suppression by virus infection was not reflected by the defense against intraperitoneal infection withListeria monocytogenes andE. coli. In contrast, a small increase in resistance toListeria infection was recorded. The results of this study lend little support to the hypothesis that influenza infection impairs the immunological defense against a following bacterial infection, but may result in allergy.  相似文献

Summary The effects of nocodazole and brefeldin A (BFA) on the growth of dikaryotic hyphae inSchizophyllum commune corresponded with the development of abnormal structures in the apical region of treated hyphae. Microtubules (MTs) were totally depolymerized after 1 h nocodazole treatment, which correlated with strong branch formation in the apical cells. One reason for branching could be the shift in the position of apical vesicles from the center to the side of the tip, observed in some nocodazole-treated hyphae. After 2 h growth in the presence of nocodazole the apical cells had malformed or swollen tips, or tips of normal shape but containing only a few apical vesicles. After 0.5 h treatment with BFA, almost all the leading hyphae had swollen apical parts in which the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) formed an interconnected network and perturbed Golgi particles were found. The orientation of MTs in the BFA-treated hyphae often followed that of the interconnected ER network, which suggested an association between MTs and ER. The results of the experiments with nocodazole suggest that, in filamentous homobasidiomycetes the subtle organization of cytoplasm necessary for the polar growth at the apex is maintained only in the presence of an intact MT cytoskeleton. The BFA experiments indicated that the secretion pathway inS. commune is sensitive to BFA. The intertidal Bivalvia Barrimysia siphonosomae (Montacutidae) and Pseudopythina ochetostomae (Kelliidae) live commensally with Siphonosoma cumanense (Sipuncula) and Ochetostoma erythrogrammon (Echiura), respectively. Both bivalves are hermaphrodites although males and females may occur. Paired, pouch-shaped seminal receptacles are located in the suprabranchial chamber near the genital opening of both species. The interior of the receptacles of sexually mature individuals contains numerous non-epithelial cells separated by narrow spaces that serve as a depot for sperm cells. Specimens of both species produce two sperm morphotypes. Euspermatozoa are oblong with elongate conical acrosomes, and a middlepiece consisting of about eight long mitochondria spirally arranged to form a sheath surrounding the basis of the flagellum. The paraspermatozoa are vermiform, about 4 µm broad and longer (up to 240 µm) in B. siphonosomae than in P. ochetostomae (ca 150 µm). The anterior, bullet-shaped, 4.5- or 3.0-µm-long acrosome is located above an elongate, 4- to 6-µm-long subcylindrical nucleus. Adjacent to the nucleus occurs a bundle of approximately 25 (B. siphonosomae) or ca 10 (P. ochetostomae) flagella. The cytoplasm of the sperm body contains spherical lipid droplets, glycogen deposits and numerous membrane-bound spindle- to rod-shaped electron-dense granules. It is presumed that both sperm types aggregate to form spermatozeugmata. The presence of a combination of almost identical and highly specialised euspermatozoa and paraspermatozoa in species of the two genera qualifies these structures as strong synapomorphies. Pseudopythina, as presently defined, is considered paraphyletic.  相似文献

Laboratory, semi-natural and field observations indicate that the Mongolian gerbil may naturally live in pairs or family groups. Endocrine influence on behaviour towards cagemates and non-cagemates was investigated. The males tested were intact or castrated. The hormonal condition of the females was controlled by gonadectomy and oestrogen and progesterone replacement treatment. The duration and number of visits to the incentive animals were recorded in a choice test, which allowed restricted contact between the experimental and incentive animals. Anoestrous females approached the intact cagemates more than the non-cagemates, while the intact males approached the non-cagemates more often. A comparison of the female behaviour under the different female endocrine conditions tested showed that females significantly increased their response in oestrus towards the strange intact males but not towards their cagemates. Experimental intact males analogously increased their response towards the strange oestrus female but not towards the cagemate. In tests which involved castrated males either as experimentals or incentives, no behavioural change was seen relative to the endocrine condition of the female. The hormonal effects seen were thus connected with the social relationship, as the hormone-induced changes were seen only in behaviour towards a strange animal.  相似文献

Abstract

The goal of identifying hazardous chemicals registered under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of CHemicals (REACH) Regulation and taking appropriate risk management measures relies on robust data registrations. However, the current procedures for European chemical manufacturers and importers to evaluate data under REACH neither support systematic evaluations of data nor transparently communicate these assessments. The aim of this study was to explore how using a data evaluation method with predefined criteria for reliability and establishing principles for assigning reliability categories could contribute to more structured and transparent evaluations under REACH. In total, 20 peer-reviewed studies for 15 substances registered under REACH were selected for an in-depth evaluation of reliability with the SciRAP tool. The results show that using a method for study evaluation, with clear criteria for assessing reliability and assigning studies to reliability categories, contributes to more structured and transparent reliability evaluations. Consequently, it is recommended to implement a method for evaluating data under REACH with predefined criteria and fields for documenting and justifying the assessments to increase consistency of data evaluations and transparency.  相似文献
