An infestation of a sooty tern colony on Bird Island, Seychelles, with the ixodid tick Amblovomma loculosum was studied during visits to the colony in 1993 to 1995. During the infestation, adult ticks were numerous during the birds' incubation, larvae were abundant when young chicks were present, and there was some evidence that nymphs were found when older chicks were present. The life cycle of the tick appeared closely synchronized with that of its host. Following a breeding failure of the sooty terns, caused by adverse weather in August-September 1994, few adult ticks were found during the birds' breeding season of 1995, suggesting that the absence of chicks late in the 1994 breeding season led to starvation of the ticks and their failure to survive their diapause until the onset of the birds' next breeding season.  相似文献

Floating marshes occur over 70% of the western Terrebonne Basin, Louisiana, USA, freshwater coastal wetlands. They are of several types: A free-floating thick-mat (45–60 cm) marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia; a thick mat marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia that floats part of the year, but whose vertical floating range is damped compared to adjacent water; and an irregularly-floating thin mat (< 30 cm) dominated by Eleocharis spp. in the spring and Ludwigia leptocarpa and Bidens laevis in the summer and fall. Floating mats must be almost entirely organic in order to be buoyant enough to float. The western Terrebonne wetlands receive large winter/spring supplies of suspended sediments from the Atchafalaya River. Even though sediment concentrations in the adjacent bayou are as high as 100 mg l–1, the Panicum hemitomon/Sagittaria lancifolia free-floating marsh probably receives no over-surface sediments since it floats continuously. The bulk density data of the damped-floating marsh, however, suggest some mineral sediment input, probably during winter when this marsh is submerged. These two types of floating marsh could not have developed in the present sediment regime of the Atchafalaya River, but as long as they remain floating can continue to exist. Thin floating mats are found in areas receiving the least sediment (<20 mg 1–1 suspended sediment concentration in adjacent bayous). This low sediment environment probably made possible their formation within the past 20 years. They may represent a transitional stage in mat succession from (1) existing thick-mat floating marsh to a degrading floating marsh, or (2) a floating marsh developing in shallow open water.Corresponding editor: D. Neisseria meningitidis pili are filamentous protein structures that are essential adhesins in capsulate bacteria. Pili of adhesion variants of meningococcal strain C311 contain glycosyl residues on pilin (PilE), their major structural subunit. Despite the presence of three potential N -linked glycosylation sites, none appears to be occupied in these pilins. Instead, a novel O -linked trisaccharide substituent, not previously found as a constituent of glycoproteins, is present within a peptide spanning amino acid residues 45 to 73 of the PilE molecule. This structure contains a terminal 1-4-linked digalactose moiety covalently linked to a 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxyhexose sugar which is directly attached to pilin. Pilins derived from galactose epimerase ( galE ) mutants lack the digalactosyl moiety, but retain the diacetamidotrideoxyhexose substitution. Both parental (#3) pilins and those derived from a hyper-adherent variant (#16) contained identical sugar substitutions in this region of pilin, and galE mutants of #3 were similar to the parental phenotype in their adherence to host cells. These studies have confirmed our previous observations that meningococcal pili are glycosylated and provided the first structural evidence for the presence of covalently linked carbohydrate on pili. Summary It was reported previously that melanoma leukocyte-dependent antibody (LDA) in the sera of melanoma patients was inhibited by small-molecular-weight (small-mol.-wt.) glycoproteins which were similar to cell surface antigens identified in cell membrane extracts of melanoma cells. The present study was to determine whether measurement of the levels of these factors in sera may be a useful monitor of tumor growth in melanoma patients. Small-mol.-wt. fractions were obtained by gel filtration or membrane chromatography of acidified sera and tested for their ability to inhibit LDA in 51Cr release cytotoxic assays. A panel of LDA was used, consisting of three antisera from melanoma patients, which appeared relatively specific for melanoma, and three non-melanoma antisera against carcinoembryonic antigen, 2 microglobulin, and fetal antigens. The results showed that in patients with melanoma, approximately 70% had melanoma LDA-inhibitory activity detected in the small-mol.-wt. fractions of their sera when these were tested against the panel of melanoma LDA. The specificity of the inhibitory activity for melanoma LDA was shown by failure of the serum fractions to inhibit non-melanoma LDA and by absence of inhibitory activity in equivalent serum fractions from non-melanoma carcinoma patients for melanoma LDA. The levels of melanoma LDA-inhibitory activity in the serum fractions appeared to correlate with tumor growth, as shown by clearance of the inhibitory activity after surgical removal of melanoma and reappearance in the serum of patients who subsequently developed recurrent melanoma. The 30% false-negative rate indicated that the assays could not be used to reliably exclude melanoma, but the close correlation with tumor growth and the low number of false-positive results suggested that in 70% of patients detection of these small-mol.-wt. antigens would be of value to detect recurrence from melanoma and to monitor the effectiveness of therapy.  相似文献
