A microcosm study was constructed to investigate the effect of complex co-substrate (corn steep liquor, CSL) addition on indigenous bacterial community, rate and extent of petroleum hydrocarbons (PH) degradation in an oily soil with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) content of 63353 mg kg?1. TPH degradation was found to be characterized by a rapid phase of degradation during the first three weeks where 76% removal of TPH occurred, followed by a slower degradation phase, where further 7% of the initial TPH was removed by the end of incubation period, 35 d. Branched alkanes are more resistant to microbial degradation than n-alkanes. Furthermore, the unresolved complex mixtures (UCM) of hydrocarbons are less degradable than n- and iso-alkanes. Pristane (Pr) was the most recalcitrant aliphatic compound studied in this work. These results in addition to the extensive bacterial growth observed (from 107 to 1010 CFU g?1 soil) give strong support that the addition of CSL resulted in increased degradation rates. The indigenous bacteria grew exponentially during the incubation period of 35 d with a growth rate of 0.26 d?1. Kinetic modeling was performed to estimate the rates of biodegradation of each hydrocarbon type component in the studied system. Five different error functions were used in this study to evaluate the fitness of the model equation to the obtained experimental data. This showed that the degradation of ∑nC20-nC24, ∑nC35-nC42 and nC18 can be better represented by a second order model, whereas the TPH, total resolvable peaks (TRP), nC17, UCM, ∑nC10-nC14, ∑nC15-nC19, ∑nC25-nC29, ∑nC30-nC34, ∑nCn, and ∑isoCn and isoprenoids Pr and phytane (Ph) were similarly following the first order model.  相似文献

The Netherlands is "well known" for its nitrogen problems; it has one of the highest reactive nitrogen (Nr) emission densities in the world. It is a small country at the delta of several large European rivers. Ever since the industrial revolution, there has been a growing excess of nutrients and related emissions into the atmosphere (ammonia, nitrogen oxides and nitrous oxide) and into groundwater and surface water (nitrate), leading to a large range of cascading environmental impacts. Vehicular traffic, sewage and animal husbandry are the main sources of oxidized and reduced forms of Nr. This paper provides an overview of the origin and fate of nitrogen in the Netherlands, the various reported impacts of nitrogen, the Dutch and European policies to reduce nitrogen emissions and related impacts. In addition, ways are presented to go forward to potentially solve the problems in a European perspective. Solutions include the improvement of nitrogen efficiencies in different systems, technological options and education.  相似文献

Background  

The typical antbirds (Thamnophilidae) form a monophyletic and diverse family of suboscine passerines that inhabit neotropical forests. However, the phylogenetic relationships within this assemblage are poorly understood. Herein, we present a hypothesis of the generic relationships of this group based on Bayesian inference analyses of two nuclear introns and the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. The level of phylogenetic congruence between the individual genes has been investigated utilizing Bayes factors. We also explore how changes in the substitution models affected the observed incongruence between partitions of our data set.  相似文献

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), not only damages crops, but controlling its population also requires synthetic insecticides, which leads to selection of resistant populations and environmental contamination. Essential oils are an alternative for controlling this insect. There are few studies of the effects of these oils on the insect's reproductive system. We evaluated the effects of the long pepper, Piper hispidinervum, essential oil on the gonads of the armyworm and tested its possible influence on the fertility of this insect. Dosages of 30 and 50 mg/ml were tested in 3rd instar caterpillars using the leaf immersion method. Testes and ovarioles were collected, fixed with 10% formalin and embedded in Historesin. The sections were stained with toluidine blue and Mallory trichrome to detect connective tissue, periodic acid-Schiff to detect neutral carbohydrates, and bromophenol blue to detect proteins. We found that the long pepper essential oil affected negatively the spermatogenesis and altered the histochemistry of the ovarioles of S. frugiperda. The effects of long pepper oil suggest that it is a promising tool for controlling the armyworm pest.  相似文献

Abstract

Cyclic imides containing 3-benzenesulfonamide, oxime, and β-phenylalanine derivatives were synthesised and evaluated to elucidate their in vivo anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic activity and in vitro cytotoxic effects. Most active anti-inflammatory agents were subjected to in vitro COX-1/2 inhibition assay. 3-Benzenesulfonamides (2–4, and 9), oximes (11–13), and β-phenylalanine derivative (18) showed potential anti-inflammatory activities with 71.2–82.9% oedema inhibition relative to celecoxib and diclofenac (85.6 and 83.4%, respectively). Most active cyclic imides 4, 9, 12, 13, and 18 possessed ED50 of 35.4–45.3?mg kg?1 relative to that of celecoxib (34.1?mg kg?1). For the cytotoxic evaluation, the selected derivatives 2–6 and 8 exhibited weak positive cytotoxic effects (PCE = 2/59–5/59) at 10?μM compared to the standard drug, imatinib (PCE = 20/59). Cyclic imides bearing 3-benzenesulfonamide (2–5, and 9), acetophenone oxime (11–14, 18, and 19) exhibited high selectivity against COX-2 with SI > 55.6–333.3 relative to that for celecoxib [SI > 387.6]. β-Phenylalanine derivatives 21–24 and 28 were non-selective towards COX-1/2 isozymes as indicated by their SI of 0.46–0.68.  相似文献

Thirty-four endophytic marine Actinomycetes isolates were recovered from the Egyptian marine sponge Latrunculia corticata, out of them 5 isolates (14.7 %) showed red single colonies on yeast-CzAPEK plates. Isolates under the isolation code NRC50 and NRC51 were observed with the strongest red biomass. After application of protoplast fusion between NRC50 and NRC51 isolates, 26 fusants were selected and produced widely different amounts of prodigiosin-like pigments (PLPs) on different fermentation media. Among them fusant NRCF69 produced 79 and 160.4 % PLPs more than parental strains NRC50 and NRC51, respectively. According to the analysis of 16S rDNA sequence (amplified, sequenced, and submitted to GenBank under Accession no. JN232405 and JN232406, respectively), together with their morphological and biochemical characteristics, parental strains NRC50 (P1) and NRC51 (P2) were identified as Streptomyces sp. and designated as Streptomyces sp. NRC50 and Streptomyces sp. NRC51. This study describes a low cost, effective production media by using peanut seed broth, sunflower oil broth or dairy processing wastewater broth alone, or supplemented with 0.5 % mannitol that supports the production of PLPs by the Streptomyces fusant NRCF69 under study (42.03, 40.11, 36.7 and 47 g L?1, respectively). PLPs compounds exhibited significant cytotoxic activities against three human cancer cell lines: colon cancer cell line (HCT-116), liver cancer cell line (HEPG-2) and breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and antimycotic activity against clinical dermatophyte isolates of Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton.  相似文献
