Severely burned areas in the pitch pine-dominated forests of the New Jersey Pinelands may remain open and only vegetated with mats of lichens and mosses and sparse, scattered vascular plants for many decades. We hypothesize that climate-driven alternation between moss and lichen domination of the cryptogam mats may foster and inhibit, respectively, vascular plant development. We propose that these processes are mediated by the inhibitory effects of lichens on seed germination and seedling establishment versus a facilitating effect of mosses. We tested the hypothesis by 1) detailed surveys of the composition of cryptogam mats and their association with vascular plants, 2) experimental studies of the effects of tissue leachates on seed germination, 3) observations of mycorrhizal infection in field-collected plants, and 4) experimental tests of seedling emergence from mats. Lichen dominance in the mats was correlated with low densities of vascular plants (graminoids and ericoid shrubs), thin organic horizons on the soil, and high levels of light availability; moss dominance was correlated with higher vascular plant densities, thicker organic horizons, and lower light. Tissue extracts of lichens strongly inhibited seed germination, while moss extracts had no effect. Similarly, mycorrhizal infection by both ecto- and endomycorrhizae was lower in plants growing within lichen mats than in moss mats or in bare soil. However, thick mats of both types of cryptogam inhibited seedling emergence. We observed that moss-dominated patches became overgrown with lichens during a series of very dry, hot summers during the study. These observations all support the hypothesis that fluctuating warm and dry versus cool and moist conditions allow alternative stable states (open cryptogam mats vs succession to pine forest) to develop. 相似文献
The purpose of this study was to explore the association of the MCT1 gene Glu490Asp polymorphism (rs1049434) with athletic status and performance of endurance athletes. A total of 1,208 Brazilians (318 endurance athletes and 890 non-athletes) and 867 Europeans (315 endurance athletes and 552 non-athletes) were evaluated in a case–control approach. Brazilian participants were classified based on self-declared ethnicity to test whether the polymorphism was different between Caucasians and Afro-descendants. Moreover, 66 Hungarian athletes underwent an incremental test until exhaustion to assess blood lactate levels, while 46 Russian athletes had their maximum oxygen uptake ( ) compared between genotypes. In the Brazilian cohort, the major T-allele was more frequent in Caucasian top-level competitors compared to their counterparts of lower competitive level (P = 0.039), and in Afro-descendant athletes compared to non-athletes (P = 0.015). Similarly, the T-allele was more frequent in European athletes (P = 0.029). Meta-analysis of the Brazilian and European cohorts confirmed that the T-allele is over-represented in endurance athletes (OR: 1.48, P = 0.03), especially when Afro-descendant athletes were included in the meta-analysis (OR: 1.58, P = 0.005). Furthermore, carriers of the T/T genotype accumulated less blood lactate in response to intense effort (P < 0.01) and exhibited higher (P = 0.04). In conclusion, the Glu490Asp polymorphism was associated with endurance athletic status and performance. Our findings suggest that, although ethnic differences may exist, the presence of the major T-allele (i.e., the Glu-490 allele) favours endurance performance more than the mutant A-allele (i.e., the 490-Asp allele). 相似文献
Ectoparasitoids inject venom into hemolymph during oviposition. We determined the influence of envenomation by the parasitoid, Habrobracon hebetor, on the hemocytes of its larval host, Galleria mellonella. An increase in both intracellular Са2+ content and phospholipase C activity of the host hemocytes was recorded during 2 days following envenomation by the parasitoid. The decreased hemocyte viability was detected 1, 2, and 24 h after the envenomation. Injecting of the crude venom (final protein concentration 3 μg/ml) into the G. mellonella larvae led to the reduced hemocyte adhesion. The larval envenomation caused a decrease in transmembrane potential of the hemocytes. These findings document the suppression of hemocytic immune effectors in the parasitized host larvae. 相似文献
In 2016, an outbreak of anthrax killing thousands of reindeer and affecting dozens of humans occurred on the Yamal peninsula, Northwest Siberia, after 70 years of epidemiological situation without outbreaks. The trigger of the outbreak has been ascribed to the activation of spores due to permafrost thaw that was accelerated during the summer heat wave. The focus of our study is on the dynamics of local environmental factors in connection with the observed anthrax revival. We show that permafrost was thawing rapidly for already 6 years before the outbreak. During 2011–2016, relatively warm years were followed by cold years with a thick snow cover, preventing freezing of the soil. Furthermore, the spread of anthrax was likely intensified by an extremely dry summer of 2016. Concurrent with the long-term decreasing trend in the regional annual precipitation, the rainfall in July 2016 was less than 10% of its 30-year mean value. We conclude that epidemiological situation of anthrax in the previously contaminated Arctic regions requires monitoring of climatic factors such as warming and precipitation extremes.
The RNA-binding ability of ribosomal protein L1 is of profound interest, since L1 has a dual function as a ribosomal structural protein that binds rRNA and as a translational repressor that binds its own mRNA. Here, we report the crystal structure at 2.6 A resolution of ribosomal protein L1 from the bacterium Thermus thermophilus in complex with a 38 nt fragment of L1 mRNA from Methanoccocus vannielii. The conformation of RNA-bound T.thermophilus L1 differs dramatically from that of the isolated protein. Analysis of four copies of the L1-mRNA complex in the crystal has shown that domain II of the protein does not contribute to mRNA-specific binding. A detailed comparison of the protein-RNA interactions in the L1-mRNA and L1-rRNA complexes identified amino acid residues of L1 crucial for recognition of its specific targets on the both RNAs. Incorporation of the structure of bacterial L1 into a model of the Escherichia coli ribosome revealed two additional contact regions for L1 on the 23S rRNA that were not identified in previous ribosome models. 相似文献
The apoplast plays an important role in plant defense against pathogens. Some extracellular PR-4 proteins possess ribonuclease activity and may directly inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi. It is likely that extracellular RNases can also protect plants against some viruses with RNA genomes. However, many plant RNases are multifunctional and the direct link between their ribonucleolytic activity and antiviral defense still needs to be clarified. In this study, we evaluated the resistance of Nicotiana tabacum plants expressing a non-plant single-strand-specific extracellular RNase against Cucumber mosaic virus.
Results
Severe mosaic symptoms and shrinkage were observed in the control non-transgenic plants 10 days after inoculation with Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), whereas such disease symptoms were suppressed in the transgenic plants expressing the RNase gene. In a Western blot analysis, viral proliferation was observed in the uninoculated upper leaves of control plants, whereas virus levels were very low in those of transgenic plants. These results suggest that resistance against CMV was increased by the expression of the heterologous RNase gene.
Conclusion
We have previously shown that tobacco plants expressing heterologous RNases are characterized by high resistance to Tobacco mosaic virus. In this study, we demonstrated that elevated levels of extracellular RNase activity resulted in increased resistance to a virus with a different genome organization and life cycle. Thus, we conclude that the pathogen-induced expression of plant apoplastic RNases may increase non-specific resistance against viruses with RNA genomes.
Sensory information can be encoded using the average firing rate and spike occurrence times in neuronal network responses to external stimuli. Decoding or retrieving stimulus characteristics from the response pattern generally implies that the corresponding neural network has a selective response to various input signals. The role of various spiking activity characteristics (e.g., spike rate and precise spike timing) for basic information processing was widely investigated on the level of neural populations but gave inconsistent evidence for particular mechanisms. Multisite electrophysiology of cultured neural networks grown on microelectrode arrays is a recently developed tool and currently an active research area. In this study, we analyzed the stimulus responses represented by network-wide bursts evoked from various spatial locations (electrodes). We found that the response characteristics, such as the burst initiation time and the spike rate, can be used to retrieve information about the stimulus location. The best selectivity in the response spiking pattern could be found for a small subpopulation of neurones (electrodes) at relatively short post-stimulus intervals. Such intervals were unique for each culture due to the non-uniform organization of the functional connectivity in the network during spontaneous development. 相似文献
In the New Jersey Pinelands, severely disturbed areas often do not undergo a rapid succession to forest; rather, a patchy
cover of lichens, mosses and grasses persists for decades. We hypothesized that these plant covers affect soil microbial processes
in different ways, and that these effects may alter the successional dynamics of the patches. We predicted that the moss and
grass covers stimulate soil microbial activity, whereas lichens inhibit it, which may in turn inhibit succession. We collected
soil cores from beneath each type of cover plus bare soil within two types of highly disturbed areas—sites subjected to hot
wildfires, and areas mined for sand. Organic matter (OM) content, soil respiration and potential N mineralization were measured
in the cores. Soils under mosses were similar to those under grasses; they accumulated more OM and produced more mineral N,
predominantly in the form of ammonium, than either the bare soils or the soils beneath lichens. Mineralization under lichens,
like that of the bare soils but unlike the soils beneath mosses or grasses, was dominated by net nitrification. These patterns
were reproduced in experimentally transplanted moss and lichen mats. Mosses appear to create high-nutrient microsites via
high rates of OM accumulation and production of ammonium, whereas lichens maintain low-nutrient patches similar to bare soil
via low OM accumulation rates and production of mineral N predominantly in the mobile nitrate form. These differences in soil
properties may explain the lack of vascular plant invasion in lichen mats, in contrast to the moss-dominated areas. 相似文献
