When green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) fly into spider orb webs, they often simply reverse their flight direction and pull away (Table I). If a lacewing is trapped, it uses a specialized escape behavior. It first cuts away the sticky strands entangling head, feet, and antennae. If an antenna cannot be freed by tugging, it uses an antenna climb (Fig. 5A). After its body is free, the lacewing remains suspended by its hair-covered wings, which are held in a characteristic cruciform position (Fig. 5B). Orb web sticky strands adhere poorly to the hairy wings (Fig. 7), so the chrysopid may just wait until the strands slide off and it falls free. If placed in an orb web when the spider is at the web hub and ready to attack, a lacewing usually does not have time to escape (Fig. 1). When the spider is at the hub but eating, the chances of escape improve, and when the spider is away from the hub attacking other prey, nearly all lacewings in our experiment were able to escape. Background

On November 24th 2005, the Government of England and Wales removed regulatory restrictions on the times at which licensed premises could sell alcohol. This study tests availability theory by treating the implementation of Licensing Act (2003) as a natural experiment in alcohol policy.

Methods

An interrupted time series design was employed to estimate the Act’s immediate and delayed impact on violence in the City of Manchester (Population 464,200). We collected police recorded rates of violence, robbery, and total crime between the 1st of February 2004 and the 31st of December 2007. Events were aggregated by week, yielding a total of 204 observations (95 pre-, and 109 post-intervention). Secondary analysis examined changes in daily patterns of violence. Pre- and post-intervention events were separated into four three-hour segments 18∶00–20∶59, 21∶00–23.59, 00∶00–02∶59, 03∶00–05∶59.

Results

Analysis found no evidence that the Licensing Act (2003) affected the overall volume of violence. However, analyses of night-time violence found a gradual and permanent shift of weekend violence into later parts of the night. The results estimated an initial increase of 27.5% between 03∶00 to 06∶00 (ω = 0.2433, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.42), which increased to 36% by the end of the study period (δ = −0.897, 95% CI = −1.02, −0.77).

Conclusions

This study found no evidence that a national policy increasing the physical availability of alcohol affected the overall volume of violence. There was, however, evidence suggesting that the policy may be associated with changes to patterns of violence in the early morning (3 a.m. to 6 a.m.).  相似文献

Most of the calcium that activates contraction in the heart comes from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and it is therefore essential to control the SR Ca content. SR Ca content reflects the balance between uptake (via the SR Ca-ATPase, SERCA) and release, largely via the ryanodine receptor (RyR). Unwanted changes of SR Ca are prevented because, for example, an increase of SR Ca content increases the amplitude of the systolic Ca transient and this, in turn, results in increased loss of Ca from and decreased Ca entry into the cell thereby restoring cell and SR Ca towards control levels. We discuss the parameters that affect the steady level of SR Ca and how these may change in heart failure. Finally, we discuss disordered Ca regulation with particular emphasis on the condition of alternans where successive heartbeats alternate in amplitude. This behaviour can be explained by excessive feedback gain in the processes controlling SR Ca.  相似文献

Various expiants of wheat, onion, garlic, and cabbage were examined for their regeneration efficiency in the presence of acetone in the culture medium. Acetone at concentrations between 1.5% and 3.0% (w/v) was shown to increase the degree of callusing and meristem formation, as well as the capacity to regenerate. It also significantly increased the survival and regeneration efficiency of expiants inoculated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a bacterium known to reduce expiant viability. Resistance to root rot disease, caused by Helminthosporium sativum, was also increased. Transverse (t) tubules are surface membrane invaginations that are present in all mammalian cardiac ventricular cells. The apposition of L-type Ca(2+) channels on t tubules with the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) constitutes a "calcium release unit" and allows close coupling of excitation to the rise in systolic Ca(2+). T tubules are virtually absent in the atria of small mammals, and therefore Ca(2+) release from the SR occurs initially at the periphery of the cell and then propagates into the interior. Recent work has, however, shown the occurrence of t tubules in atrial myocytes from sheep. As in the ventricle, Ca(2+) release in these cells occurs simultaneously in central and peripheral regions. T tubules in both the atria and the ventricle are lost in disease, contributing to cellular dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine if the occurrence of t tubules in the atrium is restricted to sheep or is a more general property of larger mammals including humans. In atrial tissue sections from human, horse, cow, and sheep, membranes were labeled using wheat germ agglutinin. As previously shown in sheep, extensive t-tubule networks were present in horse, cow, and human atrial myocytes. Analysis shows half the volume of the cell lies within 0.64 ± 0.03, 0.77 ± 0.03, 0.84 ± 0.03, and 1.56 ± 0.19 μm of t-tubule membrane in horse, cow, sheep, and human atrial myocytes, respectively. The presence of t tubules in the human atria may play an important role in determining the spatio-temporal properties of the systolic Ca(2+) transient and how this is perturbed in disease.  相似文献

Because the calmodulin in postsynaptic densities (PSDs) activates a cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, we decided to explore the possibility that the PSD also contains a calmodulin-activatable protein kinase activity. As seen by autoradiographic analysis of coomassie blue-stained SDS polyacrylamide gels, many proteins in a native PSD preparation were phosphorylated in the presence of [γ-(32)P]ATP and Mg(2+) alone. Addition of Ca(2+) alone to the native PSD preparation had little or no effect on phosphorylation. However, upon addition of exogenous calmodulin there was a general increase in background phosphorylation with a statistically significant increase in the phosphorylation of two protein regions: 51,000 and 62,000 M(r). Similar results were also obtained in sonicated or freeze thawed native PSD preparations by addition of Ca(2+) alone without exogenous calmodulin, indicating that the calmodulin in the PSD can activate the kinase present under certain conditions. The calmodulin dependency of the reaction was further strengthened by the observed inhibition of the calmodulin-activatable phosphorylation, but not of the Mg(2+)-dependent activity, by the Ca(2+) chelator, EGTA, which also removes the calmodulin from the structure (26), and by the binding to calmodulin of the antipsychotic drug chlorpromazine in the presence of Ca(2+). In addition, when a calmodulin-deficient PSD preparation was prepared (26), sonicated, and incubated with [γ-(32)P]ATP, Mg(2+) and Ca(2+), one could not induce a Ca(2+)-stimulation of protein kinase activity unless exogenous calmodulin was added back to the system, indicating a reconstitution of calmodulin into the PSD. We have also attempted to identify the two major phosphorylated proteins. Based on SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, it appears that the major 51,000 M(r) PSD protein is the one that is phosphorylated and not the 51,000 M(r) component of brain intermediate filaments, which is a known PSD contaminant. In addition, papain digestion of the 51,000 M(r) protein revealed multiple phosphorylation sites different from those phosphorylated by the Mg(2+)-dependent kinase(s). Finally, although the calmodulin-activatable protein kinase may phosphorylate proteins I(a) and I(b), the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase, which definitely does phosphorylate protein I(a) and I(b) and is present in the PSD, does not phosphorylate the 51,000 and 62,000 M(r) proteins, because specific inhibition of this kinase has no effect on the levels of the phosphorylation of these latter two proteins.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Female Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) mate selectively with large males able to transmit sizeable quantities of nutrient and defensive pyrrolizidine alkaloid with the spermatophore. The female gauges male size indirectly by assessment of the male's courtship pheromone.
2. Male Utetheisa invest upward of 10% of body mass in spermatophore production, and could therefore have been expected to be choosy; however, when offered females differing in alkaloid content, body mass, or mating status, males showed disregard of these parameters, both in their choice of partner and in their allocation of resources to the spermatophore.
3. It is concluded that Utetheisa males do not have the option to select females by comparison shopping . Females broadcast their attractant pheromone for less than an hour per day. Given this time constraint and the potentially high cost of mate localisation, males may have no choice but to mate on an opportunistic basis.  相似文献

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of early‐gestational androgen excess on adult body fat distribution in female rhesus monkeys. Research Methods and Procedures: Six midreproductive‐aged, adult female rhesus monkeys that were exposed to androgen excess started during the first one‐third of gestation were pair‐matched to control females by age, body weight, and body mass index. Body composition was determined using somatometrics, DXA, and computed tomography. Results: Total abdominal and intra‐abdominal fat depots are increased in adult female rhesus monkeys exposed to prenatal androgen excess. Discussion: Early gestational androgen excess in female rhesus monkeys causes a preferential accumulation of total abdominal and intra‐abdominal fat during adulthood. Fat accumulation in these regions is independent of total body adiposity, occurring throughout the spectrum of body mass index in these animals. This study establishes alterations in abdominal adiposity as another consequence of prenatal androgen excess in female rhesus monkeys that may contribute to the impaired insulin secretion observed in these animals during adulthood.  相似文献
