This paper presents the morphological, histological and ultrastructural characteristics of Myxobolus oliveirai sp. nov., a parasite of the gill filaments in Brycon hilarii from the Brazilian Pantanal. Out of 216 B. hilariispecimens examined (126 wild and 90 cultivated), 38.1% of wild specimens (n = 48) were infected. The parasites form elongated plasmodia primarily in the tip of gill filaments, reaching about 3 mm in length. A thorough comparison with all the Myxobolus species described from South American hosts, as well as nearly all the Myxobolus species described so far is provided. Partial sequencing of the 18S rDNA gene revealed a total of 1,527 bp. The Myxobolus species parasite of B. hilarii did not match any of the Myxozoa available in GenBank. In the phylogenetic analysis, M. oliveirai sp. nov. composed a monophyletic group with eight other species: five species of Myxobolus parasites of mugilid fishes, two parasites of pangasiid and one of centrarchid. Infection prevalence values of the parasite revealed no significant differences between wet and dry seasons or between males and females. Anopheles darlingi is the most important malaria vector in Central and South America. After a dramatic reduction of malaria cases in the whole Brazilian territory, with the lowest abundance being attained by 1970, the disease resurged in the Amazon region, where it is now a great public health concern. Consequently, better knowledge about vector species became urgent. We examined the genetic diversity and population structure of A. darlingi, sampled in four localities in the State of Rond?nia, Brazil, using 139 amplified fragment length polymorphism marker loci. In each locality, samples were collected in two environments: a peri-domicile one (in the balconies of houses) and an extra-domicile environment (about 15 m from the house). Estimates of expected heterozygosity, Shannon diversity index and percentage of polymorphic loci showed medium to high values, with the samples from the areas closer to Porto Velho exhibiting the smallest values. There was evidence of small population differences, evaluated by F(st), genetic distance and analysis of molecular variance. Comparison between peri- and extra-domicile samples showed greater values of F(st) and genetic distance than between pairs of localities, indicating influence of environmental conditions on the genetics of populations. 相似文献

Recent global warming reduces surface water salinity around the Antarctic Peninsula as a result of the glacial meltwater runoff, which increases the occurrence and abundance of certain phytoplankton groups, such as cryptophytes. The dominance of this particular group over diatoms affects grazers, such as Antarctic krill, which preferentially feed on diatoms. Using three late summer data sets from the Bransfield Strait (2008–2010), we observed variations in the dominant phytoplankton groups determined by HPLC/CHEMTAX pigment analysis and confirmed by microscopy. Results indicate that the dominance of diatoms, particularly in 2008 and 2009, was associated with a deeper upper mixed layer (UML), higher salinity and warmer sea surface temperature. In contrast, cryptophytes, which were dominant in 2010, were associated with a shallower UML, lower salinity and colder sea surface temperatures. The low diatom biomass observed in the summer of 2010 was associated with high nutrient concentration, particularly silicate, and low chlorophyll a (summer monthly average calculated from satellite images). The interannual variability here observed suggests a delayed seasonal succession cycle of phytoplankton in the summer of 2010 associated with a cold summer and a late ice retreat process in the region. This successional delay resulted in a notable decrease of primary producers’ biomass, which is likely to have impacted regional food web interactions. This study demonstrates the susceptibility of the Antarctic phytoplankton community structure to air temperature, which directly influences the timing of ice melting and consequently the magnitude of primary production and succession pattern of phytoplankton groups. 相似文献

Aluminum (Al) is a limiting factor of crop yields on acidic soils. Ion aluminum (Al3+) acts primarily in plant root system retarding its growth and development, leading to the reduction of lateral roots number, and consequently the decrease of vegetal production. Most of coffee producing areas are located in acidic soils, which have Al3+ contents enough to damage plant development. Despite the advances in the understanding of physiological and genetic mechanisms of Al tolerance/susceptibility, few are known about Al ion action in coffee plants. This report describes the expression analysis of genes related to aluminum stress in germinating seeds of two cultivars of C. arabica (Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62 and Icatu Vermelho IAC 4045) when challenged with Al3+. In silico analyses of Brazilian Coffee Genome Project (BCGP) database were used to select genes previously found to be related with Al-stress. The expression profile of these genes in Catuaí and Icatu was evaluated through Quantitative PCR (qPCR). Based on our data, we suggest that both analyzed cultivars displays mechanisms of resistance or exclusion, which occurs outside the cell excluding Al3+ assimilation, and mechanisms of tolerance that occurs inside the cell after Al3+ absorption. The major difference is the timing of activation of each mechanism. While Catuaí tends to use resistance mechanisms in early stages of stress, Icatu uses tolerance strategies. In late stages, both cultivars seem to display tolerance mechanisms, but Icatu also displays Al-exclusion strategy. 相似文献

A longitudinal study was conducted in Manaus, Brazil, to monitor changes of
adult Aedes aegypti (L.) abundance. The objectives were to
compare mosquito collections of two trap types, to characterise temporal changes of
the mosquito population, to investigate the influence of meteorological variables on
mosquito collections and to analyse the association between mosquito collections and
dengue incidence. Mosquito monitoring was performed fortnightly using MosquiTRAPs
(MQT) and BG-Sentinel (BGS) traps between December 2008-June 2010. The two traps
revealed opposing temporal infestation patterns, with highest mosquito collections of
MQTs during the dry season and highest collections of BGS during the rainy seasons.
Several meteorological variables were significant predictors of mosquito collections
in the BGS. The best predictor was the relative humidity, lagged two weeks (in a
positive relationship). For MQT, only the number of rainy days in the previous week
was significant (in a negative relationship). The correlation between monthly dengue
incidence and mosquito abundance in BGS and MQT was moderately positive and negative,
respectively. Catches of BGS traps reflected better the dynamic of dengue incidence.
The findings help to understand the effects of meteorological variables on mosquito
infestation indices of two different traps for adult dengue vectors in Manaus. 相似文献

Aims
S100A9 is a new inflammatory marker associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease. Because epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is an inflammatory source in coronary artery disease (CAD), our aim was to evaluate the S100A9 levels in plasma and EAT and its association with CAD.Main methods
Blood, EAT and/or subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) biopsies were obtained from 89 patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. Plasma S100A9 and adiponectin were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and mRNA expression in both fat pads and were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Key findings
Our results have shown higher levels of plasma S100A9 in patients with CAD than those without (29 [10–50] vs. 17 [3–28] ng/mL; p = 0.007). They were dependent on the number of injured-coronaries (p = 0.002) with tendency toward negative association with plasma adiponectin (p = 0.139). Although EAT expressed higher levels than SAT and their levels were higher in CAD patients, this last difference did not reach statistical significance. However, there was a positive correlation between neutrophils and EAT S100A9 expression (p = 0.007) that may reveal an increase of neutrophil filtration on this fat pad.Significance
Plasma S100A9 levels are increased in chronic CAD. The absence of differences regarding EAT S100A9 expression levels indicates a differential inflammatory process between fat tissues and blood in CAD process. 相似文献69.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the serum level of netrin and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-I) in patients with type IΙ diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and evaluate the association of their levels with the development of a diabetic complication.Patients and methodsThis study was carried out on type II diabetic patients with and without complications and healthy individuals served as controls. All subjects were submitted to the estimation of serum lipid profile, serum creatinine, urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), visceral adiposity index (VAI), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and detection of serum level of netrin1 and VCAM1.ResultsDiabetic patients with complications had significantly higher serum levels of creatinine, ACR, cholesterol, Triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, netrin1, and VCAM1 than diabetic patients without complications. Likewise, the level of VAI and LAP as markers of excessive body fat were significantly higher in diabetic patients with complications than diabetic patients without complications. The netrin1 and VCAM1 were a significant discriminator of T2DM renal complications with a sensitivity of 96%, 90%, and specificity of 82.7%, 91.3% respectively.ConclusionIt can be concluded that serum netrin1 and VCAM1 correlated significantly with markers of excessive body fat, a renal complication in the patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus. 相似文献

During April and May 2006, experiments were carried out in Brejo do Mutambal, Varzelandia Town, Minas Gerais State, to evaluate the attractiveness of phlebotomine sandflies to CDC light traps, baited with kairomones. Of the 19 species of Lutzomyia already registered for the region, L. lutziana (Costa Lima), L. longipennis (Barreto), L. goiana (Martins, Falc?o & Silva) and L. brasiliensis (Costa Lima) were recorded for the first time, thus increasing the diversity of phlebotomine sandflies fauna in this area to 23 species.
