Background

Immature stages of many animals can forage and feed on their own, whereas others depend on their parents’ assistance to obtain or process food. But how does such dependency evolve, and which offspring and parental traits are involved? Burying beetles (Nicrophorus) provide extensive biparental care, including food provisioning to their offspring. Interestingly, there is substantial variation in the reliance of offspring on post-hatching care among species. Here, we examine the proximate mechanisms underlying offspring dependence, focusing on the larvae of N. orbicollis, which are not able to survive in the absence of parents. We specifically asked whether the high offspring dependence is caused by (1) a low starvation tolerance, (2) a low ability to self-feed or (3) the need to obtain parental oral fluids. Finally, we determined how much care (i.e. duration of care) they require to be able to survive.

Results

We demonstrate that N. orbicollis larvae are not characterized by a lower starvation tolerance than larvae of the more independent species. Hatchlings of N. orbicollis are generally able to self-feed, but the efficiency depends on the kind of food presented and differs from the more independent species. Further, we show that even when providing highly dependent N. orbicollis larvae with easy ingestible liquefied mice carrion, only few of them survived to pupation. However, adding parental oral fluids significantly increased their survival rate. Finally, we demonstrate that survival and growth of dependent N. orbicollis larvae is increased greatly by only a few hours of parental care.

Conclusions

Considering the fact that larvae of other burying beetle species are able to survive in the absence of care, the high dependence of N. orbicollis larvae is puzzling. Even though they have not lost the ability to self-feed, an easily digestible, liquefied carrion meal is not sufficient to ensure their survival. However, our results indicate that the transfer of parental oral fluids is an essential component of care. In the majority of mammals, offspring rely on the exchange of fluids (i.e. milk) to survive, and our findings suggest that even in subsocial insects, such as burying beetles, parental fluids can significantly affect offspring survival.

The acoustic signals produced by male crickets and katydidsfunction in part for the maintenance of territories, broadcastareas within which males have exclusive access to sexually receptivefemales. Although it is widely assumed that a male's abilityto hear and respond appropriately to calling neighbors is vitalto his mating success, this hypothesis has never been experimentallychallenged. We tested this hypothesis by experimentally deafeningmale sagebrush crickets (Cyphoderris strepitans) and comparingtheir mating success with that of untreated and sham-treatedcontrol males. Despite the fact that deafened males had a reducedability to detect nearby rivals, we found no difference in themating success of deafened and control males in experimentsconducted over two years (1991 and 1993). We further examinedthe importance of signal detection to male spacing by establishingexperimental populations consisting exclusively of either deafenedmales or hearing controls, whose nearest-neighbor distanceshad been experimentally compressed. Assuming that calling functionsin part to repel rivals, we predicted that hearing males wouldspace themselves out more rapidly in the nights following theirrelease. However, in only two of four replicates were nearest-neighbordistances significantly different across treatments. We concludethat, in contrast to the mating systems of other acoustic Orthoptera:(1) male mating success is not contingent on auditory inputfrom calling rivals, (2) signaling in sagebrush crickets mayfunction only sporadically in territorial maintenance, and (3)calling occasionally mediates spacing of males in natural populations,but this effect may vary either over the course of the breedingseason or between populations. We attribute these results tothe unique mating system of C. strepitans. a short, highly synchronizedbreeding season coupled with a high male mating investment anda super-abundance of calling sites conspire against investmentin territorial maintenance, but instead favor a form of acousticallymediated scramble competition.  相似文献

Abstract We describe the identification of polymorphic microsatellite loci in the pathogenic yeast, Candida albicans . A search for all coding-region microsatellites with more than four repeats that can be found in Candida sequences in GenBank was conducted. Nine such microsatellite sequences consisting of trinucleotide motifs were found. Three of these were perfect microsatellites while the remaining six sequences were found in one imperfect microsatellite and two compound microsatellites. Because of the close proximity of some of these repeats, all could be assayed with six PCR primer pairs. All of these microsatellite sequences were found in five nuclear genes, ZNF1, CCN1, CPH1, EFG1 , and MNT2 . Except for a single (CTT)5 serine tract, all coded for polyglutamine tracts. Another locus with seven alleles, a region of the ERK1 protein kinase gene, was also examined, and may be a representative of a new class of highly polymorphic ‘clustered’ microsatellites. Such loci, in which several non-contiguous but closely linked microsatellites are clustered together, may be a useful source of DNA polymorphisms in microorganisms in which long microsatellite sequences are unavailable. All seven regions amplified were polymorphic, having between two and seven variable length alleles in the 11 strains of Candida albicans examined. The results of this and similar searches will facilitate epidemiological and evolutionary studies of Candida and other microorganisms.  相似文献

Summary Microdensitometry demonstrated that stable acid phosphatase (SAPhase) in rat and hamster osteoclasts, chondroclasts, and chondrocytes has very similar properties. The differences that were observed suggest that conformational alterations in the enzymes may be responsible for inhibition by some agents such as tartrate. These differences in response to inhibitors depend on the method of embedding as well as on species differences. SAPhase appears to correspond to acid nitrophenyl phosphatase, as shown by its pH dependent re-activation, resistance to fluoride inhibition at nearneutral pH, and the inverse effect of pH on inhibition by zinc versus aluminium ions. That proportion of SAPhase resistant to fluoride is an acid phosphatase with activity at near-neutral pH rather than a strict neutral phosphatase. The difference between fluoride sensitive and fluoride resistant SAPhase may relate to the varying association of a single enzyme with cell or lysosomal membrances. The close similarity of acid and neutral SAPhase suggests that both may represent a single enzyme in two forms rather than two distinct enzymes.Supported by the Medical Research Council of Great Britain  相似文献

The phloem of most fossil plants, including that of Sphenophyllum, is very poorly known. Sphenophyllum was a relatively small type of fossil arthrophyte with jointed stems bearing whorls of leaves ranging in form from wedge or fan-shaped to bifid, to linear. The aerial stem systems of the plant exhibited determinate growth involving progressive reduction in the dimensions of the stem primary bodies, fewer leaves per whorl, and smaller and simpler leaves distally. The primary phloem occurs in three areas alternating in position with the arms of the triarch centrally placed primary xylem. Cells of the primary phloem, presumably sieve elements, are axially elongate with horizontal to slightly tapered end walls. In larger stems with abundant secondary xylem and secondary cortex or periderm, a zone of secondary phloem occurs whose structure varies in the three areas opposite the arms of the primary xylem, as opposed to the three areas lying opposite the concave sides of the primary xylem. The axial system of the secondary phloem consists of vertical series of sieve elements with horizontal end walls. In the areas opposite the protoxylem the parenchyma is present as a prominent ray system showing dilation peripherally. Sieve elements in the areas opposite the protoxylem arms have relatively small diameters. In the areas between the protoxylem poles the secondary phloem sieve elements have large diameters and are less obviously in radial files, while the parenchyma resembles that of the secondary xylem in these areas in that it consists of strands of cells extending both radially and tangentially. An actively meristematic vascular cambium has not been found, indicating that this layer changed histologically after the cessation of growth in the determinate aerial stem systems and was replaced by a post-meristematic parenchyma sheath made up of axially elongate parenchyma lacking cells indicative of being either fusiform or ray initials. A phellogen arose early in development in a tissue believed to represent pericycle and produced tissue comparable to phellem externally. Normally, derivatives of the phellogen underwent one division prior to the maturation of the cells. Concentric bands of cells with dark contents apparently represent secretory tissue in the periderm and cell arrangements indicate that a single persistent phellogen was present. Sphenophyllum is compared with other arthrophytes as to phloem structure and is at present the best documented example of a plant with a functionally bifacial vascular cambium in any exclusively non-seed group of vascular plants.  相似文献

Copolymers based on dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]silole (DTS) and dithienylthiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole (TTz) are synthesized and tested in an all‐solution roll process for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Fabrication of polymer:[6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) solar cells is done on a previously reported compact coating/printing machine, which enables the preparation of PSCs that are directly scalable with full roll‐to‐roll processing. The positioning of the side‐chains on the thiophene units proves to be very significant in terms of solubility of the polymers and consequently has a major impact on the device yield and process control. The most successful processing is accomplished with the polymer, PDTSTTz‐4 , that has the side‐chains situated in the 4‐position on the thiophene units. Inverted PSCs based on PDTSTTz‐4 demonstrate high fill factors, up to 59%, even with active layer thicknesses well above 200 nm. Power conversion efficiencies of up to 3.5% can be reached with the roll‐coated PDTSTTz‐4 :PCBM solar cells that, together with good process control and high device yield, designate PDTSTTz‐4 as a convincing candidate for high‐throughput roll‐to‐roll production of PSCs.  相似文献

Baylisascaris procyonis is a nematode of significant concern to public and domestic animal health as well as wildlife management. The population genetics of B. procyonis is poorly understood. To gain insights into patterns of genetic diversity within (infrapopulation level) and among (component population level) raccoon (Procyon lotor) hosts, and specifically to assess the relative importance of indirect and direct transmission of the parasite for explaining observed population structure, we collected 69 B. procyonis from 17 wild raccoons inhabiting five counties in Missouri and Arkansas, USA. Informative regions of mitochondrial (CO1, CO2) and nuclear (28S, ITS2) genes were amplified and the distribution and genetic variability of these genes were assessed within and across raccoons. Concatenation of the CO1 and CO2 mtDNA sequences resulted in 5 unique haplotypes, with haplotype diversity 0.456?±?0.068. The most common haplotype occurred in 94% of raccoons and 72.5% of B. procyonis. Sequences for 28S rDNA revealed four unique nuclear genotypes, the most common found in 100% of raccoons and 82.6% of B. procyonis. ITS2 genotypes were assessed using fragment analysis, and there was a 1:1 correspondence between 28S and ITS-2 genotypes. Infrapopulation variation in haplotypes and genotypes was high and virtually all hosts infected with multiple sequenced nematodes also harbored multiple haplotypes and genotypes. There was a positive relationship between the size of the analyzed infrapopulation (i.e., the number of nematodes analyzed) and the number of haplotypes identified in an individual. Collectively this work emphasizes the importance of indirect transmission in the lifecycle to this parasite.  相似文献

Eggert , Donald A. (Southern Illinois U., Carbondale.) Studies of Palerzoic ferns: The frond of Ankyropteris glabra. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(4): 379–387. Illus. 1963—The major features of the frond of A. glabra are described on the basis of preserved parts found in Middle Pennsylvanian coal ball material from Illinois. The frond is planated and has well-developed foliar laminae. Primary pinnae arise from the petiole in 2 alternating series, and secondary pinnae arise in a similar fashion from the primary pinnae. Foliar laminae occur on the secondary pinnae and have dichotomous venation. The xylem of the petiole has a diupsilon configuration in the lower part of the axis, while higher in the petiole the xylem forms a strand resembling that of the European species A. westfaliensis. The xylem strands of the primary pinnae arise from the adaxial antennae of the petiolar vascular strand as somewhat C-shapcd bodies and develop antennae and become H-shaped at higher levels. A gap occurs in the antenna of the petiole vascular system above the level of departure of the primary pinna trace. Terete vascular strands occur in the secondary pinna axes which arise from the adaxial antennae of the xylem of the primary pinnae. The foliar laminae are relatively thin, have an irregular outline, and their histology is like that found in many living ferns. The frond of A. glabra illustrates that leaf evolution had progressed in at least one species of the coenopterid family Zygopteridaceae to the extent that an essentially 2-dimensional frond of modern aspect, and with well-developed foliar laminae, was present by Middle Pennsylvanian time.  相似文献

Eggert , Donald A. (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.) Studies of Paleozoic ferns. The morphology, anatomy, and taxonomy of Ankyropteris glabra. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(7): 510–520. Illus. 1959.—This is a morphological and taxonomic study of the American specimens of Ankyropteris, with the exception of A. hendricksi, that previous to this time have been referred to A. grayi, originally a Lower Carboniferous species from England, and to A. glabra, a Middle-Pennsylvanian form from Booneville, Indiana. The problem of the separation of these two closely allied species is discussed, and the original criteria for separation are questioned, on the basis of four specimens described in the present paper. The specimens are from West Mineral, Kans. and Shuler Mine in Iowa. They all have been referred to A. glabra and show extreme plasticity of several features of the plant that is correlated with the size of the stem. The major points of difference between A. glabra and A. grayi are now thought to be the presence of distantly spaced nodes in A. glabra, in contrast to closely spaced ones in A. grayi, and the presence of a small amount of mixed tissue in the stele of A. glabra, compared to a large amount in A. grayi. Well preserved axillary branches were found, whose morphology is typically that of the parent stem. It is suggested that the axillary branches were well developed in the species, and that, therefore, several orders of branching may be present in the American material. Successive orders of branching show diminution and simplification which is interpreted as an expression of the presence of determinate growth in the cauline systems of the plant, an ontogenetic pattern that is not commonly found in living forms.  相似文献
