Reproductive, phenotypic and life-history traits in many animal and plant taxa show geographic variation, indicating spatial variation in selection regimes. Maternal deposition to avian eggs, such as hormones, antibodies and antioxidants, critically affect development of the offspring, with long-lasting effects on the phenotype and fitness. Little is however known about large-scale geographical patterns of variation in maternal deposition to eggs. We studied geographical variation in egg components of a passerine bird, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), by collecting samples from 16 populations and measuring egg and yolk mass, albumen lysozyme activity, yolk immunoglobulins, yolk androgens and yolk total carotenoids. We found significant variation among populations in most egg components, but ca. 90% of the variation was among individuals within populations. Population however explained 40% of the variation in carotenoid levels. In contrast to our hypothesis, we found geographical trends only in carotenoids, but not in any of the other egg components. Our results thus suggest high within-population variation and leave little scope for local adaptation and genetic differentiation in deposition of different egg components. The role of these maternally-derived resources in evolutionary change should be further investigated.  相似文献

Questions: What impact do a wet and a dry growing season have on CO2 dynamics of mire plant communities along a primary succession gradient from the initiation stage to the bog stage? Location: Mires on a land uplift coast, Finland. Methods: We measured CO2 dynamics and vascular plant green area development on five mires that form a sequence of mire succession. TWINSPAN was used to define successional mire plant communities and regression analyses were used to explore the temporal variation in CO2 dynamics of the communities. Results: CO2 dynamics of successional plant communities reacted differently to a wet and a dry growing season. The net CO2 uptake rate of the earlier successional communities decreased in the dry growing season due to a decrease in photosynthesizing leaf area. Concurrently, CO2 uptake of the later successional communities moderately increased or did not change. Generally, the difference in net ecosystem exchange (NEE) between a dry and a wet year resulted from the altered rate of gross photosynthesis (PG) rather than ecosystem respiration (RE). Conclusions: Critical factors for the more stable carbon (C) gas dynamics in the later stages of mire succession were (1) higher autogenic control of the physical environment and (2) an increase in the number of factors regulating the PG rate. These factors may buffer mire ecosystems (in terms of the C sink function) from extreme and unfavourable variations in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Questions: What were the bog fire patterns and frequencies in two boreal peatlands during the last 5000 years? What is the nature and time‐scale of post‐fire vegetation successions? Were fire events related to climate? Location: Männikjärve bog, central east Estonia; Kontolanrahka bog, southwest Finland. Methods: Macroscopic charcoal, plant macrofossils and radiocarbon dating were examined. Redundancy analysis was used in the assessments. Results: During the last 5000 years, both of the above peatlands have experienced several fire events. A typical pre‐fire vegetation community consisted of dry hummock Sphagnum spp., often accompanied by Calluna vulgaris. Only the most severe occasional fires resulted in a dramatic change in the vegetation composition. In these cases, a wet shift occurred, where the pre‐fire hummock community was replaced by a wet hollow community. Calluna vulgaris was found to be a key species in both pre‐ and post‐fire vegetation dynamics. The recovery time of dry microtopes following severe combustion and the subsequent hydrological change could take up to 350 years. Even after a long‐lasting wet phase, the post‐fire disturbance succession led towards a dry hummock community. Conclusions: Fire succession appeared to be cyclic, starting as and developing towards a dry hummock community. Fires have been a regular phenomenon in boreal bogs, even in regions with rather low human impact. The fire history records did not indicate any direct link to the regional long‐term climate.  相似文献

The mechanisms of endosomal and lysosomal cholesterol traffic are still poorly understood. We showed previously that unesterified cholesterol accumulates in the late endosomes and lysosomes of fibroblasts deficient in both lysosome associated membrane protein-2 (LAMP-2) and LAMP-1, two abundant membrane proteins of late endosomes and lysosomes. In this study we show that in cells deficient in both LAMP-1 and LAMP-2 (LAMP−/−), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor levels and LDL uptake are increased as compared to wild-type cells. However, there is a defect in esterification of both endogenous and LDL cholesterol. These results suggest that LAMP−/− cells have a defect in cholesterol transport to the site of esterification in the endoplasmic reticulum, likely due to defective export of cholesterol out of late endosomes or lysosomes. We also show that cholesterol accumulates in LAMP-2 deficient liver and that overexpression of LAMP-2 retards the lysosomal cholesterol accumulation induced by U18666A. These results point to a critical role for LAMP-2 in endosomal/lysosomal cholesterol export. Moreover, the late endosomal/lysosomal cholesterol accumulation in LAMP−/− cells was diminished by overexpression of any of the three isoforms of LAMP-2, but not by LAMP-1. The LAMP-2 luminal domain, the membrane-proximal half in particular, was necessary and sufficient for the rescue effect. Taken together, our results suggest that LAMP-2, its luminal domain in particular, plays a critical role in endosomal cholesterol transport and that this is distinct from the chaperone-mediated autophagy function of LAMP-2.  相似文献

Climate change affects peatlands directly through increased air temperatures and indirectly through changes in water‐table level (WL). The interactions of these two still remain poorly known. We determined experimentally the separate and interactive effects of temperature and WL regime on factors of relevance for the inputs to the carbon cycle: plant community composition, phenology, biomass production, and shoot:root allocation in two wet boreal sedge‐dominated fens, “southern” at 62°N and “northern” at 68°Ν. Warming (1.5°C higher average daily air temperature) was induced with open‐top chambers and WL drawdown (WLD; 3–7 cm on average) by shallow ditches. Total biomass production varied from 250 to 520 g/m2, with belowground production comprising 25%–63%. Warming was associated with minor effects on phenology and negligible effects on community composition, biomass production, and allocation. WLD clearly affected the contribution of different plant functional types (PFTs) in the community and the biomass they produced: shrubs benefited while forbs and mosses suffered. These responses did not depend on the warming treatment. Following WLD, aboveground biomass production decreased mainly due to reduced growth of mosses in the southern fen. Aboveground vascular plant biomass production remained unchanged but the contribution of different PFTs changed. The observed changes were also reflected in plant phenology, with different PFTs showing different responses. Belowground production increased following WLD in the northern fen only, but an increase in the contributions of shrubs and forbs was observed in both sites, while sedge contribution decreased. Moderate warming alone seems not able to drive significant changes in plant productivity or community composition in these wet ecosystems. However, if warming is accompanied by even modest WL drawdown, changes should be expected in the relative contribution of PFTs, which could lead to profound changes in the function of fens. Consequently, hydrological scenarios are of utmost importance when estimating their future function.  相似文献

The coumarin composition of Peucedanum palustre (L.) Moench populations growing in Finland was investigated. A total of 132 flowering P. palustre specimens from 43 locations in southern and central Finland were collected, divided into root, stem, leaf, and umbel samples, and analyzed by HPLC. HPLC coupled to high‐resolution mass spectrometry was used to aid the identification of coumarins. A total of 13 coumarin‐structured compounds were quantitatively analyzed from the samples. The coumarin profile of root samples was found to differ from the aerial plant parts. The main coumarins in roots were oxypeucedanin and columbianadin. In aerial parts, peulustrin isomers were the most abundant coumarin components. Umbels and leaves also contained a considerable amount of umbelliprenin, which was only found in traces in roots. Based on hierarchical cluster analysis of the coumarin profiles, some populations shared common characteristics. The most distinct property connecting certain populations was their high peulustrin content. Another notable common property between some populations was the high umbelliprenin content in aerial plant parts. Some populations were clustered together due to their low overall coumarin content.  相似文献

Avian species respond to ecological variability at a range of spatial scales and according to life history stage. Beaver dams create wetland systems for waterbirds that are utilized throughout different stages of the breeding season. We studied how beaver‐induced variability affected mobile pairs and more sedentary broods along with the production of Common Teal Anas crecca at the patch and landscape scale on their breeding grounds. Beavers Castor spp. are ecosystem engineers that enhance waterfowl habitats by impeding water flow and creating temporary flooding. Two landscapes in southern Finland with (Evo) and without (Nuuksio) American Beavers Castor canadensis were used in this study. To investigate the patch‐scale effect, pair and brood densities along with brood production were first compared at beaver‐occupied lakes and non‐beaver lakes in the beaver landscape. Annual pair and brood densities/km shoreline and brood production were compared between beaver and non‐beaver landscapes. Facilitative effects of beaver activity were manifest on brood density at both patch and landscape scales: these were over 90% and 60% higher in beaver patches and landscapes, respectively. An effect of beaver presence on pair density was only seen at the landscape level. Pair density did not strongly affect brood production, as shown earlier for relatively mildly density‐dependent Teal populations. Because the extent of beaver flooding was a crucial factor affecting annual Teal production in the study area, we infer beaver activity has consequences for the local Teal population. Ecosystem engineering by the beaver could therefore be considered a restoration tool in areas where waterfowl are in need of high‐quality habitats.  相似文献

Fungal viruses (mycoviruses) with RNA genomes are believed to lack extracellular infective particles. These viruses are transmitted laterally among fungal strains through mycelial anastomoses or vertically via their infected spores, but little is known regarding their prevalence and patterns of dispersal under natural conditions. Here, we examined, in detail, the spatial and temporal changes in a mycovirus community and its host fungus Heterobasidion parviporum, the most devastating fungal pathogen of conifers in the Boreal forest region. During the 7-year sampling period, viruses accumulated in clonal host individuals as a result of indigenous viruses spreading within and between clones as well as novel strains arriving via airborne spores. Viral community changes produced pockets of heterogeneity within large H. parviporum clones. The appearance of novel viral infections in aging clones indicated that transient cell-to-cell contacts between Heterobasidion strains are likely to occur more frequently than what was inferred from genotypic analyses. Intraspecific variation was low among the three partitivirus species at the study site, whereas the unassigned viral species HetRV6 was highly polymorphic. The accumulation of point mutations during persistent infections resulted in viral diversification, that is, the presence of nearly identical viral sequence variants within single clones. Our results also suggest that co-infections by distantly related viral species are more stable than those between conspecific strains, and mutual exclusion may play a role in determining mycoviral communities.  相似文献

Abstract. We tested whether rewetting improved environmental conditions during peatland restoration and promoted colonization and development of mire vegetation. Vegetation change was monitored in a cut‐away peatland one year before, and four years after, rewetting. Colonizers before rewetting were perennials, mostly typical of hummocks or bare peat surfaces. The main variation in vegetation was related to variation in the amounts of major nutrients and water table level. The wettest site with the highest nutrient level had the highest total vegetation cover and diversity, as well as some species typical of wet minerotrophic mires. Raising the water table level above, or close to, the soil surface promoted development of wet minerotrophic vegetation. Diversity initially decreased because of the disappearance of hummock vegetation but started to recover in the third year. Eriophorum vaginatum and Carex rostrata were both favoured, and bryophytes typical of wet habitats colonized the site. Moderate rewetting promoted the development of Eriophorum vaginatum seedlings and an increase in the cover of tussocks. Bryophytes typical of disturbed peat surfaces spread. In the control site development continued slowly towards closed hummock vegetation. The study showed that raising the water level to, or above, soil surface promotes conditions wet enough for a rapid succession towards closed mire vegetation.  相似文献

Summary Chromosomes with regions rich in mitotic chiasmata in Bloom syndrome (1, 3, 6, 11, 12, 17, 19, and 22) have been compared for various parameters to similar-sized chromosomes 2, 4, 7, 10, 9, 18, 20, and 21 with the following results: (1) The number of genes localized on the test chromosomes is significantly higher (248) than that in the control chromosomes (133). (2) The number of trisomic abortions is significantly lower (45) for the test chromosomes than for the control chromosomes (140). (3) Homogeneously stained regions in neuroblastoma lie at chiasma-containing regions on chromosome arms 1p, 6p, 17q, and 19p or q. (4) The average chiasma density of regions with at least one oncogene is 2.414, whereas that of regions containing no known oncogene is 1.137; however, the difference is not statistically significant. The association of constant cancer chromosome breaks is also in the positive direction, but is not statistically significant.Our tentative conclusion is that the chiasma-rich regions which are Q-dark and early-replicating, and therefore assumed to contain active housekeeping genes are extended in interphase. Thus they are available for mitotic crossing-over. In the trisomic state they act as trisomy lethals, leading to early abortions. Being gene-rich they are more likely to contain oncogenes which is reflected also in their agreement with cancer breakpoints. The very high incidence of cancer in Bloom syndrome is a further indication of the possible association of cancer-related phenomena and mitotic crossingover.  相似文献
