The effects of adrenaline on the oxygen transport properties of Salmo gairdneri blood

1. An injection of adrenaline into the dorsal aorta of Salmo gairdneri caused an increase in the dorsal aortic O2 content at 7 and 14 degrees C. 2. At 7 degrees C the number of erythrocytes in the dorsal aorta increased as indicated by the increases in both the Hct value and the haemoglobin concentration. 3. At 14 degrees C the erythrocytes in the dorsal swelled owing to the injection of adrenaline; this shifts the O2 dissociation curve to the left and in this way increases the dorsal aortic O2 content.     

The Effects of Sugar Alcohols on Metabolism of Growing Pigs

In two experiments of 3 × 3 Latin square with growing pigs, the effect was investigated of supplementation of 5 % or 10 % (2.5 % vs. 5 % DM) polyol mixture and 2.5 % or 5 % of xylitol on digestibility of diet, N-balance, blood clinical-chemical parameters and insulin level in serum. Apparent digestibility of crude protein was lower for the diet with 10 % polyol mixture compared to the control. Sugar alcohols were not found in faeces. Arabinitol, mannitol and rhamnitol were excreted in the urine 25–67 %. Little sorbitol and xylitol were found in urine on diets with polyol mixture 5–10 %. On xylitol diets the pigs did not excrete xylitol in urine. Plasma glucose rose in pigs fed xylitol. Blood total protein and albumin decreased in pigs fed polyol mixture. ALAT-activities were higher for xylitol diets than for the controls. Serum insulin tended to increase in pigs fed polyol mixture 10 % one hour after feeding, and in xylitol feeding two hours after feeding; these values were higher with increasing xylitol inclusion in diet.     

Cysteine proteinases in chondrosarcomas

The aim of the present study was to define the role of cathepsins B, H, K, L and S in the pathogenesis of human chondrosarcomas. For this purpose 40 tumour samples obtained from 12 patients with the diagnosis of conventional chondrosarcoma were systematically investigated for the expression of cathepsin mRNAs by Northern hybridisation, and for immunohistochemical localisation of the proteins. Northern analysis demonstrated the highest levels of cathepsins B and L in a recurring grade 1 chondrosarcoma, and in a grade 3 chondrosarcoma and in fibrous histiocytomas. Increased expression of cathepsin K mRNA was seen in seven chondrosarcomas, as well as in control tumours; fibrous histiocytomas, osteosarcomas, enchondromas and a giant cell tumour of bone. Cathepsin L was immunolocalised within the large chondrocytes, while cathepsin K was predominantly localised in large multinucleated osteoclastic cells and in some hypertrophic chondrocytes. These results suggest that chondrosarcoma can be included in the growing list of tumours, where cathepsins may well be involved in tumour progression. The simultaneous upregulation of cathepsins B and L, together with matrix metalloproteinase-13, and the association of cathepsin K with negative prognostic parameters suggests that an aggressive biological behaviour of chondrosarcoma may be related to the synthesis of cysteine proteinases and activation of other proteolytic enzymes. If this turns out to be the case, cathepsin inhibitors could provide the much needed adjuvant therapy for chondrosarcomas.
