Background
Small body size at birth is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Dietary habits are tightly linked with these disorders, but the association between body size at birth and adult diet has been little studied. We examined the association between body size at birth and intake of foods and macronutrients in adulthood.Methodology/Principal Findings
We studied 1797 participants, aged 56 to 70, of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, whose birth weight and length were recorded. Preterm births were excluded. During a clinical study, diet was assessed with a validated food-frequency questionnaire. A linear regression model adjusted for potential confounders was used to assess the associations. Intake of fruits and berries was 13.26 g (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.56, 25.96) higher per 1 kg/m3 increase in ponderal index (PI) at birth, and 83.16 g (95% CI: 17.76, 148.56) higher per 1 kg higher birth weight. One unit higher PI at birth was associated with 0.14% of energy (E%) lower intake of fat (95% CI: -0.26, -0.03) and 0.18 E% higher intake of carbohydrates (95% CI: 0.04, 0.32) as well as 0.08 E% higher sucrose (95% CI: 0.00, 0.15), 0.05 E% higher fructose (95% CI: 0.01, 0.09), and 0.18 g higher fiber (95% CI: 0.02, 0.34) intake in adulthood. Similar associations were observed between birth weight and macronutrient intake.Conclusions
Prenatal growth may modify later life food and macronutrient intake. Altered dietary habits could potentially explain an increased risk of chronic disease in individuals born with small body size. 相似文献92.
The raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides Gray was introduced from the Far East in several areas of the USSR, mainly the European part, in 1929–55. The first raccoon dogs were seen in Finland in the latter half of the 1930s, and by the mid-1950s, the frontier of the first regular observations had reached the most southeasterly parts of the country. Since then, the raccoon dog dispersed through southern and central Finland at an average annual rate of 20 km. The rate of population increase, as well as present density, has been highest in southern and southeastern Finland, and lowest in the northern parts of the distribution area. The northern limit of the distribution lies nowadays in southern Lapland, only a little further north than two decades earlier, when most of southern and central Finland was already inhabited.
The length of the growing season seems to explain most of the variation in the population density between the provinces. The longer the growing season, the better the raccoon dog manages; in southern Finland where the summers are longer, the juveniles have enough time to grow and gather fat reserves before hibernation. Therefore, many of them survive the winter and even breed in the following spring. In the north, in contrast, juvenile mortality is high during the first winter because of the short summer. The food availability, the yield of wild berries and the abundance of small rodents, is mostly responsible for the annual variation in the population density. In pike E. lucius L., evidence on maternal effect on reproductive output is mixed. We studied whether older and larger pike females produce eggs and larvae of higher quality (weight, starvation resistance) in three forest lakes in southern Finland. Later, the study lakes were subjected to intensive experimental pike fishing, which we assumed would increase resource availability and lead to higher maternal investment (larger egg size). Length of female pike was positively correlated with the dry weight of eggs and larvae but this relation was dependent on female age. In old females, the effect of female length on egg weight was lower or even negative. Survival analysis showed a positive effect of female length on larval survival time indicating that larvae from larger females are less vulnerable to starvation during the early stage of life. After the intensive pike fishing, the positive effect of female length on egg weight was stronger in all age classes probably due to the released resources. Based on the high quality and amount of reproductive products in large (but not very old) females, they are important for the reproduction of pike populations. Objective: To examine the association between relative body weight and health status and the potential modifying effects of socioeconomic position and working conditions on this association. Research Methods and Procedures: The data were derived from three identical cross‐sectional surveys conducted in 2000, 2001, and 2002. Respondents to postal surveys were middle‐aged employees of the City of Helsinki (7148 women and 1799 men, response rate 67%). BMI was based on self‐reported weight and height. Health status was measured by the Short‐Form 36 subscales and component summaries. Results: Body weight was inversely associated with physical health, but in mental health, differences between BMI categories were small and inconsistent. In women, physical health deteriorated monotonically with increasing BMI, whereas in men, poor physical health was found among the obese only. Socioeconomic position did not modify the association between BMI and health. In women, the association between body weight and physical health became stronger with decreasing job control and increasing physical work load, whereas in men, a similar modifying effect was found for high job demands. Discussion: Body weight was associated with physical health only. Lower levels of relative weight in women than in men may be associated with poor physical health. High body weight combined with adverse working conditions may impose a double burden on physical health. 相似文献

The biological effect of plasma fibronectin on the differentiation of embryonic mouse kidney and tooth was studied in organ cultures. Transferrin (50 micrograms/ml) was a strong mitogen for kidney cells, whereas the addition of soluble fibronectin (50 to 250 micrograms/ml) had no detectable effect on differentiation or proliferation. The same serum-free, transferrin-containing medium did not support tooth differentiation. However, fibronectin was not a necessary serum component because fibronectin-free serum supported tooth development. It was demonstrated with antibodies specific for human fibronectin that the exogenously added human fibronectin at 50 micrograms/ml did not become incorporated to the cultured organs. Only minimal incorporation to the kidney basement membrane area was observed when fibronectin concentration was 250 micrograms/ml. The mesenchymal stroma and the basement membranes of the kidney and tooth rudiments cultured in fibronectin-free media stained intensely with conventional fibronectin antibodies, indicating endogenous production of fibronectin. Outgrowing epithelial cells from isolated kidney tubules produced fibronectin as well as laminin. The results suggest that the fibronectin found in the stroma and basement membranes is an endogenous product of the developing tissues and that plasma fibronectin is not required for in vitro organogenesis. The results also indicate that it is difficult to study the effect of fibronectin on morphogenetic processes because it may not penetrate the organ explants in vitro. 相似文献

Amazonia combines semi‐continental size with difficult access, so both current ranges of species and their ability to cope with environmental change have to be inferred from sparse field data. Although efficient techniques for modeling species distributions on the basis of a small number of species occurrences exist, their success depends on the availability of relevant environmental data layers. Soil data are important in this context, because soil properties have been found to determine plant occurrence patterns in Amazonian lowlands at all spatial scales. Here we evaluate the potential for this purpose of three digital soil maps that are freely available online: SOTERLAC, HWSD, and SoilGrids. We first tested how well they reflect local soil cation concentration as documented with 1,500 widely distributed soil samples. We found that measured soil cation concentration differed by up to two orders of magnitude between sites mapped into the same soil class. The best map‐based predictor of local soil cation concentration was obtained with a regression model combining soil classes from HWSD with cation exchange capacity (CEC) from SoilGrids. Next, we evaluated to what degree the known edaphic affinities of thirteen plant species (as documented with field data from 1,200 of the soil sample sites) can be inferred from the soil maps. The species segregated clearly along the soil cation concentration gradient in the field, but only partially along the model‐estimated cation concentration gradient, and hardly at all along the mapped CEC gradient. The main problems reducing the predictive ability of the soil maps were insufficient spatial resolution and/or georeferencing errors combined with thematic inaccuracy and absence of the most relevant edaphic variables. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in synaptic development and plasticity, and alterations in BDNF expression or signaling are implicated in drug addiction and psychiatric diseases, such as depression and schizophrenia. In this study, we administered phencyclidine to postnatal and adult rats with different time schedules, and determined the correlations between BDNF expression and the behavioral effects. Both single and repeated phencyclidine injections into adult rats induced BDNF up-regulation in the corticolimbic system and a decrease in prepulse inhibition, both of which were transient. In contrast, subchronic postnatal administration increased BDNF protein and mRNA levels in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, which were sustained until 8 weeks of age. In parallel, the postnatal rats treated with phencyclidine developed a persistent decrease in prepulse inhibition at the adult stage. The chronic BDNF increase appeared to contribute to the prepulse inhibition abnormality, as subchronic BDNF infusion into the hippocampus of normal rats mimicked the prepulse inhibition deficits. This study suggests that phencyclidine exposure during brain development induces sustained BDNF up-regulation in the limbic system with a biological link to sensorimotor gating deficits. 相似文献
