Biodegradation of [C]Tri-p-Cresyl Phosphate in a Laboratory Activated-Sludge System

Biodegradation of [C]tri-p-cresyl phosphate was studied in a laboratory model sewage treatment system to develop information on the nature of its transformation products. In 24-h experiments, 70 to 80% of tri-p-cresyl phosphate added at the 1-mug/ml level was degraded. The remaining parent compound was associated with the sludge solids. The major metabolite extracted with ethyl ether from the aqueous phase was identified as p-hydroxybenzoic acid by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Two unstable ether-extractable metabolites were not identified. The half-life of [C]tri-p-cresyl phosphate was estimated to be 7.5 h.     

The taxonomy of the family Paramphistomidae Fischoeder, 1901 with special reference to the morphology of species occurring in ruminants. II. Revision of the genus Paramphistomum Fischoeder, 1901

Summary The genus Paramphistomum Fischoeder, 1901 is redefined and restricted and only the following species are retained and considered valid: P. cervi (Zeder, 1790) (type species); P. liorchis Fischoeder, 1901; P. gracile Fischoeder, 1901 P. epiclitum Fischoeder, 1904; P. gotoi Fukui, 1922, P. ichikawai Fukui, 1922; P. leydeni Näsmark, 1937 and P. hiberniae Willmott, 1950. These are redescribed and illustrated. A new species, Paramphistomum cephalophi is described and illustrated from the black-fronted duiker (Cephalophus nigrifrons) in Rwanda. It differs from the rest of the species in the genus by the presence of an anterior sphincter in the pharynx and the characteristic posterior notch of the acetabular rim. Scanning electron photomicrographs of the tegumental surfaces of the species in the genus are provided. Paramphistomum indicum Stiles & Goldberger, 1910 (in part) and P. bombayiensis Gupta & Verma in Gupta & Nakhasi, 1977 are regarded as synonyms of Paramphistomum gracile Fischoeder, 1901. P. scotiae Willmott, 1950, P. julimarinorum Velázquez-Maldonado, 1976, P. nicabrasilorum Velázquez- Maldonado, 1976, P. procapri Wang, 1979 and Cotylophoron skrjabini Mitskevich, 1958 are considered synonyms of Paramphistomum leydeni Näsmark, 1937. Cotylophoron vigisi Davydova, 1963 is considered synonymous with Paramphistomum ichikawai Fukui, 1922. Paramphistomum birmense Railliet, 1924, P. microon Railliet, 1924, P. chinensis Hsu, 1935 and P. pseudocuonum Wang, 1979 are regarded as species inquirendae.The genera Liorchis Velichko, 1966 and Srivastavaia Singh, 1970 are synonymized with Paramphistomum Fischoeder, 1901.A key to the species of the genus is provided.Part of a thesis approved by the University of London for the award of the Ph.D. degree.Part of a thesis approved by the University of London for the award of the Ph.D. degree.

A combination thin-layer chromatographic collector and elution apparatus is described. The device is designed to minimize manipulations and maximize accuracy and can be used for both analytical and small-scale preparative separations.     

Voltage-dependent conductance induced by hemocyanin in black lipid films

When hemocyanin is added to a black lipid film, the conductance increases in discrete steps. For negative potentials the single step conductance is constant, but for positive potentials the step conductance appears to decrease as the potential increases. At high positive potentials the conductance fluctuates between several levels. These data suggest that, in lipid membranes, hemocyanin conducts ions through discrete channels. The voltage-dependent conductance observed at high levels of conductance seems to be a consequence of the properties of the conductance of the single channel.     

The nature of the voltage-dependent conductance of the hemocyanin channel.

The electrical responses of individual hemocyanain channels in oxidized cholesterol membranes demonstrate that the voltage-dependent conductance of many-chanel membranes arises from two different mechanisms. These are the voltage-dependent redistribution of channels among several discrete single-channel conductance states themselves. The relaxation time for the discrete conductance changes is of the order of seconds nd the relaxation time of the continuous conductance changes is of the order 10(-4) seconds. As salt concentration in the bathing medium is increased, the single-channel conductance first increases lineary and then saturates. The characteristics of the saturation curves suggest that the continuous conductance changes occur at the edges of the channel and that the mean time an ion spends in the channel is 4 nanoseconds...     

Degradation of [α-14C]hordenine in Hordeum vulgare plants

Evidence is presented indicating that intact plants of Hordeum vulgare degrade [α- ¹⁴C]hordenine to ¹⁴CO ₂.
