The possibility that power-to-power (theta–beta) frequency coupling increases during development was analyzed. Three minutes of spontaneous EEG in an open eyes condition were recorded in a sample of 160 subjects ranging from 6 to 26 years old. Theta (4–7 Hz) and beta band (15–20 Hz) power was calculated in a trial-by-trial basis. Inter-electrode power correlations (IPC) were computed in each subject as the correlation between the power of two frequency bands recorded in two electrodes. An increase in theta–beta IPC with age was obtained. IPCs were higher when theta was seeded in posterior regions than in anterior or central regions. Moreover, the significant correlations between each individual IPC and age were calculated, making it possible to draw IPC versus age correlation maps in order to capture the IPC development topography. An increase was found in significant correlations in the left hemisphere compared to the right hemisphere. There were no differences in the inter-hemispheric versus intra-hemispheric IPC maturation spatial patterns. An increase in power-to-power–frequency coupling in theta–beta occurs during development, suggesting an increase in functional connectivity with age. Frequency coupling between theta and beta rhythms would be one of the mechanisms facilitating integration of long distance functional networks during development.  相似文献

The speckled flounder Paralichthys woolmani is a flatfish species found in Ecuadorian coastal waters, consumed by local coastal communities and likely an excellent candidate for aquaculture production in indoor facilities. This study describes the early development and culture technique of P. woolmani under experimental conditions. Broodstocks were obtained from the wild and kept under laboratory conditions for this study. A total of four effective spontaneous spawns were registered at water temperature of 24.1°C, resulting in 1.3 million eggs and 129.2 thousand newly hatched larvae. Larval pelagic life lasted 28 days post hatch. Survival at benthic juvenile stage ranged 0.3%–46.9%. Pseudoalbinism was present in all juvenile batches. However, different pigmentation patterns in juveniles were recovered with addition of semi‐moist diet. There was no presence of ectoparasites or abnormal eye migration. At 370 days post hatch, flatfish reached 294.6 ± 86.9 g of body weight. These results can be of practical use for optimizing culture conditions to increase the yield of P. woolmani in captivity.  相似文献

The use of phosphate solubilizing bacteria as inoculants simultaneously increases P uptake by the plant and crop yield. Strains from the genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Rhizobium are among the most powerful phosphate solubilizers. The principal mechanism for mineral phosphate solubilization is the production of organic acids, and acid phosphatases play a major role in the mineralization of organic phosphorous in soil. Several phosphatase-encoding genes have been cloned and characterized and a few genes involved in mineral phosphate solubilization have been isolated. Therefore, genetic manipulation of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria to improve their ability to improve plant growth may include cloning genes involved in both mineral and organic phosphate solubilization, followed by their expression in selected rhizobacterial strains. Chromosomal insertion of these genes under appropriate promoters is an interesting approach.  相似文献

This work focused on determining the effects of ammonia-nitrogen supplementation on the mesophilic solid-substrate anaerobic digestion of municipal wastes and waste activated sludge (biosolids). Bench-scale, semi-continuous, mesophilic reactors were operated with a 21-day mass-retention time and dosed with NH4Cl, such that the corresponding chemical O2 demand (COD)/N ratios in their feeds were 90, 80, 65 and 50 (reactors R1 or control, R2, R3 and R4 respectively). Reactor performance was evaluated in terms of the efficiency of volatile solid removal (efficiency for short), biogas productivity, methane content in the biogas, pH and volatile organic acid contents, among other monitoring and analytical parameters. The feedstock was a mixture of urban wastes with biosolids. It was found that the process performance deteriorated at increasing dosages of ammonia N, the process practically ceasing at COD/N = 50 (R4). Inhibition was characterized by efficiency and biogas productivity decreases and a more sudden drop of methane content in biogas and pH. A significant rise of propionic, butyric and valeric acid was found in reactors receiving the highest doses of ammonia N (R3 and R4). This suggested that inhibition of the syntrophic bacteria present in the anaerobic consortia also occurred. Luong and Pearson inhibition models were fitted to the data. Both models represented very well the acute effects of N supplementation on solid-substrate anaerobic digestion. However, the Luong model could also represent the process ceasing at a critical ammonia N concentration of 2800 mg/kg mixed solids. Background

Helicobacter pylori has a reduced genome and lives in a tough environment for long-term persistence. It evolved with its particular characteristics for biological adaptation. Because several H. pylori genome sequences are available, comparative analysis could help to better understand genomic adaptation of this particular bacterium.

Principal Findings

We analyzed nine H. pylori genomes with emphasis on microevolution from a different perspective. Inversion was an important factor to shape the genome structure. Illegitimate recombination not only led to genomic inversion but also inverted fragment duplication, both of which contributed to the creation of new genes and gene family, and further, homological recombination contributed to events of inversion. Based on the information of genomic rearrangement, the first genome scaffold structure of H. pylori last common ancestor was produced. The core genome consists of 1186 genes, of which 22 genes could particularly adapt to human stomach niche. H. pylori contains high proportion of pseudogenes whose genesis was principally caused by homopolynucleotide (HPN) mutations. Such mutations are reversible and facilitate the control of gene expression through the change of DNA structure. The reversible mutations and a quasi-panmictic feature could allow such genes or gene fragments frequently transferred within or between populations. Hence, pseudogenes could be a reservoir of adaptation materials and the HPN mutations could be favorable to H. pylori adaptation, leading to HPN accumulation on the genomes, which corresponds to a special feature of Helicobacter species: extremely high HPN composition of genome.

Conclusion

Our research demonstrated that both genome content and structure of H. pylori have been highly adapted to its particular life style.  相似文献

For the general public, but also for healthcare professionals, schizophrenia is still one of those areas of medicine connected with feelings of unease, fear and prejudice. These feelings lead to stigmatization and discrimination which are unjust processes which put patients suffering from mental illnesses into undesirable and unequal positions. Aim of this research was to establish the extent of stigmatization of mentally ill patients among the population of healthcare professionals and future healthcare professionals and if they differ from general population. Results show that stigmatization of schizophrenic patients is high among all included populations. Although there were no statistical differences between groups regarding the assessment of schizophrenic patients, nurses employed in psychiatric wards exhibited a tendency towards higher acceptance of schizophrenic patients, as well as better understanding of that illness. This data emphasizes a growing need for continuous education of general population but also of healthcare professionals.  相似文献

Ceramide is a key lipid mediator of cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, growth arrest and apoptosis. During apoptosis, ceramide is produced within the plasma membrane. Although recent data suggest that the generation of intracellular ceramide increases mitochondrial permeability, the source of mitochondrial ceramide remains unknown. Here, we determine whether a stress-mediated plasmalemmal pool of ceramide might become available to the mitochondria of apoptotic cells. We have previously established annexin A1--a member of a family of Ca(2+) and membrane-binding proteins--to be a marker of ceramide platforms. Using fluorescently tagged annexin A1, we show that, upon its generation within the plasma membrane, ceramide self-associates into platforms that subsequently invaginate and fuse with mitochondria. An accumulation of ceramide within the mitochondria of apoptotic cells was also confirmed using a ceramide-specific antibody. Electron microscopic tomography confirmed that upon the formation of ceramide platforms, the invaginated regions of the plasma membrane extend deep into the cytoplasm forming direct physical contacts with mitochondrial outer membranes. Ceramide might thus be directly transferred from the plasma membrane to the mitochondrial outer membrane. It is conceivable that this "kiss-of-death" increases the permeability of the mitochondrial outer membrane thereby triggering apoptosis.  相似文献

The presence of fluoroquinolone based antimicrobials in natural waters represents a significant emerging environmental problem. In this study the suitability of a novel alkaline bacterial laccase, SilA, from Streptomyces ipomoeae to degrade two key antimicrobials, Ciprofloxacin and Norfloxacin under alkaline conditions in the presence of natural mediators was assessed. Results showed that only the selected SilA-acetosyringone system was able to degrade more than 90 % of both fluoroquinolones. HPLC analysis of the degradation products obtained after enzyme treatment confirmed the disappearance of the antimicrobials and the mediator after 24 h. The time course of the degradation showed that during the first 4 h a 75 % of degradation of fluoroquinolones was detected while the mediator remained stable. A concomitant appearance of new chromatographic peaks derived from the fluoroquinolones and/or the mediator was detected. Moreover, toxicity assays demonstrated that the SilA-acetosyringone system was able to reduce the toxicity of Ciprofloxacin and Norfloxacin by 90 and 70 %, respectively. In conclusion, these findings support the suitability of a low cost and environmentally friendly strategy based on the SilA-acetosyringone system for a primary treatment of contaminated alkaline wastewaters with this type of emerging pollutants.  相似文献

The tiger beetle assemblage of the wetlands of La Mancha (central Spain) comprises nine species: Calomera littoralis littoralis, Cephalota maura maura, Cephalota circumdata imperialis, Cephalota dulcinea, Cicindela campestris campestris, Cicindela maroccana, Cylindera paludosa, Lophyra flexuosa flexuosa, and Myriochila melancholica melancholica. This assemblage represents the largest concentration of tiger beetles in a single 1º latitude / longitude square in Europe. General patterns of spatial and temporal segregation among species are discussed based on observations of 1462 specimens registered during an observation period of one year, from April to August. The different species of Cicindelini appear to be distributed over space and time, with little overlapping among them. Three sets of species replace each other phenologically as the season goes on. Most of the species occupy drying or dried salt lakes and salt marshes, with sparse vegetation cover. Spatial segregation is marked in terms of substrate and vegetation use. Calomera littoralis and Myriochila melancholica have been observed mainly on wet soils; Cephalota circumdata on dry open saline flats; Cephalota dulcinea and Cylindera paludosa in granulated substrates with typical halophytic vegetation; Cephalota maura is often present in man-modified areas. Cephalota circumdata and Cephalota dulcinea are included as species of special interest in the list of protected species in Castilla–La Mancha. Conservation problems for the Cicindelini assemblage arise from agricultural activities and inadequate use of sport vehicles. Attempts at restoring the original habitat, supressing old semi-industrial structures, may affect the spatial heterogeneity of the lakes, and have an effect on Cicindelinae diversity.  相似文献
