The kob (Kobus kob kob) population studied in the Comoé National Park, Ivory Coast, suffered unsustainable losses to poaching before and during the investigation. This in turn did not only lead to low densities but also changed the population composition, resulting in a strong female bias in all age classes except juveniles. The relative rarity of adult males probably had negative effects on the population recruitment. Although mating occurred throughout the year and birth intervals were short, at least in some females, annual birth‐rate was low compared to earlier studies in the same area. Effective conservation measures are urgently needed to ensure the future existence of the studied population. 相似文献

Properties of biopolymers produced by transglutaminase treatment of whey protein isolate and gelatin

Byproduct utilization is an important consideration in the development of sustainable processes. Whey protein isolate (WPI), a byproduct of the cheese industry, and gelatin, a byproduct of the leather industry, were reacted individually and in blends with microbial transglutaminase (mTGase) at pH 7.5 and 45 °C. When a WPI (10% w/w) solution was treated with mTGase (10 U/g) under reducing conditions, the viscosity increased four-fold and the storage modulus (G′) from 0 to 300 Pa over 20 h. Similar treatment of dilute gelatin solutions (0.5–3%) had little effect. Addition of gelatin to 10% WPI caused a synergistic increase in both viscosity and G′, with the formation of gels at concentrations greater than 1.5% added gelatin. These results suggest that new biopolymers, with improved functionality, could be developed by mTGase treatment of protein blends containing small amounts of gelatin with the less expensive whey protein. 相似文献

Placental Alkaline Phosphatase (PLAP) is a tissue-restricted isozyme of the Alkaline Phosphatase (AP) superfamily. PLAP is an oncodevelopmental enzyme expressed during pregnancy and in a variety of human cancers, but its biological function remains unknown. We report here a series of catechol compounds with great affinity for the PLAP isozyme and significant selectivity over other members of the AP superfamily. Proper lateral dimerization of the transmembrane domains of receptor tyrosine kinases is required for biochemical signal transduction across the plasma membrane. The spatial structure of the dimeric transmembrane domain of the growth factor receptor ErbB2 embedded into lipid bicelles was obtained by solution NMR, followed by molecular dynamics relaxation in an explicit lipid bilayer. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of pulmonary emboli obtained ex vivo, verified by immunohistochemistry, showed that platelet layers display brighter signal intensity than areas containing predominantly red blood cells (RBC) in T (1)-weighted MRI. These results were surprising since platelets do not contain paramagnetic haemoglobin that would enhance magnetic relaxation. Our assumption was that the fibrin meshwork areas with entrapped RBC retain abundant extracellular space filled with serum, whereas platelets regroup into tight aggregates lacking serum, essentially mimicking solid tissue structure, rich with cellular proteins that enhance T (1)-relaxation. Our hypothesis was examined by MRI and NMR relaxometry of in vitro RBC suspensions and sedimented platelets, as well as by MRI of model clots and pulmonary emboli obtained ex vivo. Pure sedimented platelets exhibited shorter proton spin lattice relaxation times (T (1) = 874 +/- 310 ms) than those of venous blood of a healthy male with 40% haematocrit (T (1) = 1277 +/- 66 ms). T (1)-values of RBC samples containing high haematocrit (>/=80%) resembled T (1) of platelet samples. In T (1)-weighted spin-echo MRI echo time and repetition time (TE/TR = 10/120 ms) the ratio of signal intensities between a non-retracted whole blood clot (with a haematocrit of 35%) and a pure platelet clot was 3.0, and the ratio between a retracted whole blood clot with an estimated haematocrit of about 58% and a pure platelet clot was 2.6. We conclude that T (1)-weighted MRI can discriminate between platelet layers of thrombi and RBC-rich areas of thrombi that are not compacted to a haematocrit level of >/=80%. 相似文献

Foetal growth from conception to birth is a complex process predetermined by the genetic configuration of the foetus, the availability of nutrients and oxygen to the foetus, maternal nutrition and various growth factors and hormones of maternal, foetal and placental origin. Maintenance of the optimal foetal environment is the key factor of the future quality of life. Such conditions like inadequate nutrition and oxygen supply, infection, hypertension, gestational diabetes or drug abuse by the mother, expose the foetus to nonphysiological environment. In conditions of severe intrauterine deprivation, there is a potential loss of structural units within the developing organ systems affecting their functionality and efficiency. Extensive human epidemiologic and animal model data indicate that during critical periods of prenatal and postnatal mammalian development, nutrition and other environmental stimuli influence developmental pathways and thereby induce permanent changes in metabolism and chronic disease susceptibility. The studies reviewed in this article show how environmental factors influence a diverse array of molecular mechanisms and consequently alter disease risk including diseases such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases, insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus, neuropsychiatric disorders, osteoporosis, asthma and immune system diseases. 相似文献
