Pigment cells in Psammechinus miliaris larvae are frequently found in regions which are morphogenetically active. They can be seen in living larvae from the the midgastrula stage up to metamorphosis. Their early development and typical characters as seen by the electron microscope are described. Histochemical methods have revealed carotenoids which are preferentially located in the pigment granules. The findings are discussed in relation to published data on photopigments. It is suggested that caroteno-proteins of the pigment cells are involved in photo-activated processes which support larval migration and/or morphogenesis. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The effects of cadmium on three ciliates are reported here. Cultures of Stylonychia lemnae, Stylonychia notophora and Oxytricha granulifera were treated with different doses of Cd according to tolerance. The two species of Stylonychia are very sensitive to the metal, white O. granulifera tolerates higher doses. Adding 50 μM of Cd to the medium did not damage cells. The accumulated metal is almost totally present in the particulate fraction after day 3. Two Cd-Zn linking fractions were separated from the soluble fraction of culture treated on day 1. The first protein linking 17 μg Cd/mg showed an ultraviolet absorption spectrum similar to that of Cd-thioneins. Preliminary amino acid analyses indicated that it contained 13% cysteine. The second protein, linking 60 μg Cd/mg, was a glycoprotein. Its ultraviolet absorption spectrum and amino acid analysis showed that this binding protein was far from being a metallothionein: its cysteine content was very low and aromatic and cyclic residues were present. This Cd-linking compound seems to be unique, since it was very different both from metallothioneins and chelatins isolated by other protozoa. The protective role of these chelating proteins is discussed. 相似文献

Explants derived from Zamia pumila embryos were cultured ona Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with naphthaleneaceticacid (NAA), N4-benzylaminopurine (BAP), or combinations of thetwo at 27 °C in darkness. NAA was invariably required forcallus initiation, and its minimal effective concentration was0.1 mg l1. BAP was not always required, and dependingon the explant type and NAA concentration, BAP either enhanced, suppressed, or had little effect on the frequency of callusinitiation. High frequency of callus initiation occurred with1.0 mg l1 NAA combined with 0.01 or 1.0 mg l1BAP. When the concentration of NAA was high relative to thatof BAP, friable callus was produced. As the relative BAP concentrationwas increased, a more compact callus formed. Compact-nodularcallus developed at equal concentrations of NAA and BAP overa wide range of absolute concentrations. Friable callus formedroots only. Compact-nodular callus formed roots, shoots andembryo-like structures. Root and shoot formation predominatedand were of nearly equal frequency. Formation of embryo-likestructures was infrequent. Zamia pumila, callus differentiation, callus formation, embryo culture, naphthaleneacetic acid, N4-benzylaminopurine 相似文献
