Abstract. 1. Reproductive costs associated with flight capability were evaluated in the wing dimorphic planthopper, Prokelisia dolus Wilson, by comparing the life history of traits of winged (macropterous) and flightless (brachypterous) females under controlled laboratory conditions.
2. Macropters with large thoraces and fully developed wings maintain a greater investment in flight apparatus than brachypters with small thoraces and reduced wings.
3. Associated with greater flight capability in the macropter of P.dolus are shorter adult life, decreased total fecundity, and delayed age at first reproduction compared to brachypterous females.
4. Under field conditions where mortality is high, the difference in realized fecundity between the two wing forms living on similar resources is further exaggerated with the brachypter having the greater advantage.
5. When the life history traits of the wing forms of P. dolus are compared with traits for nine other species of planthoppers, two similarities emerge. First, the preoviposition period of the macropterous wing form is always longer than that for the brachypter resulting in a reproductive delay. Second, most studies show that macropters are less fecund than brachypters.
6. There is no general tendency among planthopper species for macropterous adults to live fewer days or develop more slowly as nymphs compared to their flightless counterparts.
7. The reproductive delay and reduced fecundity of the volent wing form of planthoppers supports the notion that flight capability is costly and that phenotypic trade-offs between flight and reproduction exist.  相似文献

We examined the patterns of male pink bollworm (PBW), Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), moth catches in gossyplure-baited traps over a 15-year period from 1989 to 2003 in the Imperial Valley, California, USA. Monitoring was conducted during periods when different pink bollworm areawide control strategies were being used. Numbers of male pink bollworm moths caught in gossyplure-baited traps progressively decreased each year from 1990 to 1994 during short-season cotton production. High numbers of male moths caught in traps from 1995 to 1997 may have been related to moth migrations from the large cotton acreages grown in the Mexicali Valley bordering the Imperial Valley. Transgenic Bollgard (Bt) cotton was planted in 3% of the cotton area in 1996 and thereafter in 80%- 94% of the cotton area from 1997 to 2003. Pink bollworm moth trap catches were significantly lower from 1998 to 2003 than catches in 1995 to 1997, except for 1999. The trapping results suggested that Bt cotton had significant input on reduction of pink bollworm populations, confirming results of other investigators and providing additional documentation on the benefits of the Bt cotton culture.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare two methods quantifying eumelanins and pheomelanins, pigments synthesized by melanocytes. One is based on the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) quantitation of specific degradation products of each melanin type. The other requires image analysis, transmission election microscopy (TEM), and stereology. This study was carried out in cultured human melanoma cells and for each line, melanins were measured by HPLC and cells were fixed and embedded as pellets for TEM. Ultrathin sections were treated or not by the alkali elution method allowing the elimination of pheomelanins. The obtained micrographs were analyzed with our image analysis program permitting the estimation of several primary parameters. Stereology was used for estimating melanosomal maturation, intracellular melanins content, and number of melanized melanosomes per cell, for total melanin, eumelanins, or pheomelanins. Our results show a good correlation between both methods for total melanin, particularly when using the cytoplasmic volume density of melanin (r=0.93). Moreover, we report that the number of melanized melanosomes per cell and not the melanosomal maturation is responsible for the differences in total melanin content observed between the different cell lines. However, none of the stereological melanization parameters was correlated in the case of eumelanins or pheomelanins. In order to demonstrate the utter relevancy of this stereological approach, utilization of more pigmented melanoma cells, comparative study of HPLC and stereology, in normal epidermal melanocytes and a new evaluation of the alkali elution method in appropriate animal models would help us to explain the present results.  相似文献

1. The functioning of many aquatic ecosystems is controlled by surrounding terrestrial ecosystems. In a view of growing interest in linking biodiversity to ecosystem‐level processes, we examined whether and how leaf diversity influences litter decomposition and consumers in streams. 2. We tested experimentally the hypothesis that the effects of leaf diversity on decomposition are determined by the responses of leaf consumers to resource–habitat heterogeneity. Leaves from three common riparian trees, beech (Fagus sylvatica), hazel (Corylus avellana) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior), were exposed alone and in all possible mixtures of two and three species in a stream. We analysed individual leaf species for decomposition rate, microbial respiration and mycelial biomass, and we determined the species composition, abundance and biomass of shredders in leaf bags. 3. We found that the decomposition of the fastest decomposing leaves (hazel and ash) was substantially stimulated (up to twofold higher than single species leaf packs) in mixtures containing beech leaves, which are refractory. In contrast, the decomposition of beech leaves was not affected by leaf mixing. Such species‐specific behaviour of leaves in species mixtures has been overlooked in previous studies that examined the overall decomposition of litter mixtures. 4. The effects of leaf diversity on decomposition varied with the abundance and biomass of shredders but not with microbial parameters. Beech leaves alone were less attractive to shredders than leaf packs made of hazel, ash or any mixture of species. Moreover, the presence of beech leaves in mixtures led to higher shredder abundance and biomass than we had expected from data from single species exposed alone. Lastly, we found that early instars of the caddisfly Potamophylax (the dominant shredder in terms of biomass) almost exclusively used the toughest material (i.e. beech leaves) to construct their cases. 5. Leaf pack heterogeneity may have altered shredder‐mediated decomposition. Shredders colonising diverse leaf packs benefited from the stable substratum provided by beech leaves, whereas ash and hazel leaves were primarily used as food. Thus, our findings provide strong evidence for an intimate linkage between the diversity of riparian vegetation and aquatic communities.  相似文献

1. Abrasive material in the diet of herbivorous organisms comes from a variety of sources, including crystalline silica or calcium in plant tissues, accidentally ingested soil while digging or grazing, and entrapped substrate on the surfaces of plants. A wide variety of plants entrap substrate, usually with glandular trichomes. 2. A previous study demonstrated that entrapped sand provided resistance to herbivory in the field. In this study, the following questions were addressed: how does entrapped sand on Abronia latifolia (Nyctaginaceae) leaves and stems affect preference and performance of a common herbivore, the large‐bodied caterpillar Hyles lineata (Sphingidae); does this effect differ from those experienced by an internally feeding leaf miner? 3. Using a combination of experimental and observational approaches, it was found that sand comprised ~4–5% of ingested weight during normal feeding of H. lineata caterpillars. This entrapped sand caused extensive wear to their mandibles, they avoided sand‐covered plants when given the choice, and the sand negatively impacted performance metrics, including pupal weight, development time, and growth rate. In contrast, a leaf‐mining caterpillar did not have a preference for or against feeding on sandy plants. 4. These results are similar to studies on mandibular wear due to grasses, and herbivorous insects that feed on these two plant groups may have similar morphologies. It is hypothesised that increased wear potential may be a convergent solution to abrasive plants in both mammals (hypsodonty) and insects.  相似文献

The 2006 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, 'Ethical Considerations for Research Involving Prisoners', recommended five main changes to current US Common Rule regulations on prisoner research. Their third recommendation was to shift from a category-based to a risk-benefit approach to research review, similar to current guidelines on pediatric research. However, prisoners are not children, so risk-benefit constraints on prisoner research must be justified in a different way from those on pediatric research. In this paper I argue that additional risk-benefit constraints on prisoner research are unnecessary: the current Common Rule regulations, omitting category-based restrictions but conjoined with the IOM report's other four main recommendations, ensure that prisoner research is as ethical as non-prisoner research is. I explain why four problems which which may be more prevalent in prisons and which risk-benefit constraints may seem to address – coercion, undue inducements, exploitation, and protection from harm – are in fact not solved by adding further risk-benefit constraints on prisoner research.  相似文献

BOTH fermenting and non-fermenting mycoplasmas induce chromosomal aberrations in cultured cells1–4, often accompanied with changes in cell morphology4. Aula and Nichols suggested that such aberrations are induced by depletion of the essential amino-acid arginine from culture media3, since non-fermenting mycoplasmas utilize it as an energy source5. Furthermore, media prepared without arginine or other essential amino-acids cause extensive chromosome damage to certain cultured cells6. We have investigated the possibility that such changes in the cell-free media could produce such anomalies in cultured cells.  相似文献

Surveys of water quality in the surface waters in the Serengeti National Park were undertaken in both the wet and dry seasons of 1996. Most rivers were ponded, with ponds having a flushing time of 1 month in the wet season and zero flushing in the dry season. pH values varied spatially from extremely alkaline conditions (pH>10) in the southern plains to acidic conditions in the northern region (pH=5·9). In the southern plains at the end of the dry season the salinity of surface waters was high (5–17‰) while there was abundant surface water and the zebras and wildebeest had started to migrate away, a finding suggesting excessive salinity may be the trigger initiating the annual migration. Most surface waters were heavily eutrophicated as a result of animal dung. As a result, the dissolved oxygen concentration near the surface fluctuated widely between 1 and 200% of saturation, smaller values occurring deeper in the water column. Stirring and mechanical aeration by hippos, crocodiles and mammals crossing the rivers prevented the formation of anoxic conditions. The oxygen stress was measurably lessened in wetland‐fringed water bodies as a result of filtering. Light penetration was high (≥10 cm) in saline waters as a result of flocculation enhanced by bacteria and vegetation detritus, elsewhere the euphotic zone was less than 1 cm thick and the waters generally inhospitable to aquatic life. The discontinuity between wooded savanna and grassland coincides with the occurrence of alkaline, high salinity waters in the dry season.  相似文献
