In outdoor common gardens, high latitude populations of deciduous tree species often display higher assimilation rates ( A ) than low latitude populations, but they accomplish less height. To test whether trends in A reflect adaptation to growing season length or, alternatively, are garden growth artefacts, we examined variation in height increment and ecophysiological traits in a range-wide collection of Populus balsamifera L. populations from 21 provenances, during unconstrained growth in a greenhouse. Rooted cuttings, maintained without resource limitation under 21 h photoperiod for 90 d, displayed increasing height growth, A , leaf mass per area and leaf N per area with latitude whereas stomatal conductance ( g s) showed no pattern. Water-use efficiency as indicated by both gas exchange and δ 13C increased with latitude, whereas photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency decreased. Differences in δ 13C were less than expected based on A/g s, suggesting coextensive variation in internal conductance ( g m). Analysis of A – C i curves on a subset of populations showed that high latitude genotypes had greater g m than low-latitude genotypes. We conclude that higher peak rates of height growth in high latitude genotypes of balsam poplar are supported by higher A , achieved partly through higher g m, to help compensate for a shorter growing season.  相似文献

We present in situ biophysical measurements and bioassay experiments that demonstrate iron limitation of primary productivity during the spring bloom in the central North Atlantic. Mass balance calculations indicate that nitrate drawdown is iron (Fe)-limited and that aeolian Fe supply to this region cannot support maximal phytoplankton growth during the bloom. Using a simple simulation model, we show that relief of Fe limitation during the spring bloom can increase nitrate drawdown and, hence, new primary production, by 70%. We conclude that the episodic nature of iron supplied by dust deposition is an important factor controlling the dynamics of the spring bloom. From this, we hypothesize that variability in the timing and magnitude of the spring bloom in response to aeolian Fe supply will affect carbon drawdown and food web dynamics in the central North Atlantic.  相似文献

This paper provides guidance on the steps, obstacles and mistakes to avoid in the implementation of community mental health care. The document is intended to be of practical use and interest to psychiatrists worldwide regarding the development of community mental health care for adults with mental illness. The main recommendations are presented in relation to: the need for coordinated policies, plans and programmes, the requirement to scale up services for whole populations, the importance of promoting community awareness about mental illness to increase levels of help-seeking, the need to establish effective financial and budgetary provisions to directly support services provided in the community. The paper concludes by setting out a series of lessons learned from the accumulated practice of community mental health care to date worldwide, with a particular focus on the social and governmental measures that are required at the national level, the key steps to take in the organization of the local mental health system, lessons learned by professionals and practitioners, and how to most effectively harness the experience of users, families, and other advocates.  相似文献

Summary 1. Heterotrophic microorganisms are crucial for mineralising leaf litter and rendering it more palatable to leaf‐shredding invertebrates. A substantial part of leaf litter entering running waters may be buried in the streambed and thus be exposed to the constraining conditions prevailing in the hyporheic zone. The fate of this buried organic matter and particularly the role of microbial conditioning in this habitat remain largely unexplored. 2. The aim of this study was to determine how the location of leaf litter within the streambed (i.e. at the surface or buried), as well as the leaf litter burial history, may affect the leaf‐associated aquatic hyphomycete communities and therefore leaf consumption by invertebrate detritivores. We tested the hypotheses that (i) burial of leaf litter would result in lower decomposition rates associated with changes in microbial assemblages compared with leaf litter at the surface and (ii) altered microbial conditioning of buried leaf litter would lead to decreased quality and palatability to their consumers, translating into lower growth rates of detritivores. 3. These hypotheses were tested experimentally in a second‐order stream where leaf‐associated microbial communities, as well as leaf litter decomposition rates, elemental composition and toughness, were compared across controlled treatments differing by their location within the streambed. We examined the effects of the diverse conditioning treatments on decaying leaf palatability to consumers through feeding trials on three shredder taxa including a freshwater amphipod, of which we also determined the growth rate. 4. Microbial leaf litter decomposition, fungal biomass and sporulation rates were reduced when leaf litter was buried in the hyporheic zone. While the total species richness of fungal assemblages was similar among treatments, the composition of fungal assemblages was affected by leaf litter burial in sediment. 5. Leaf litter burial markedly affected the food quality (especially P content) of leaf material, probably due to the changes in microbial conditioning. Leaf litter palatability to shredders was highest for leaves exposed at the sediment surface and tended to be negatively related to leaf litter toughness and C/P ratio. In addition, burial of leaf litter led to lower amphipod growth rates, which were positively correlated with leaf litter P content. 6. These results emphasise the importance of leaf colonisation by aquatic fungi in the hyporheic zone of headwater streams, where fungal conditioning of leaf litter appears particularly critical for nutrient and energy transfer to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Repeated exposure and flooding of the Sunda and Sahul shelves during Pleistocene sea‐level fluctuations is thought to have contributed to the isolation and diversification of sea‐basin populations within the Coral Triangle. This hypothesis has been tested in numerous phylogeographical studies, recovering an assortment of genetic patterns that the authors have generally attributed to differences in larval dispersal capability or adult habitat specificity. This study compares phylogeographical patterns from mitochondrial COI sequences among two co‐distributed seastars that differ in their adult habitat and dispersal ability, and two seastar ectosymbionts that differ in their degree of host specificity. Of these, only the seastar Linckia laevigata displayed a classical pattern of Indian‐Pacific divergence, but with only moderate genetic structure (ΦCT = 0.067). In contrast, the seastar Protoreaster nodosus exhibited strong structure (ΦCT = 0.23) between Teluk Cenderawasih and the remainder of Indonesia, a pattern of regional structure that was echoed in L. laevigataCT = 0.03) as well as its obligate gastropod parasite Thyca crystallinaCT = 0.04). The generalist commensal shrimp, Periclimenes soror showed little genetic structuring across the Coral Triangle. Despite species‐specific phylogeographical patterns, all four species showed departures from neutrality that are consistent with massive range expansions onto the continental shelves as the sea levels rose, and that date within the Pleistocene epoch. Our results suggest that habitat differences may affect the manner in which species responded to Pleistocene sea‐level fluctuations, shaping contemporary patterns of genetic structure and diversity.  相似文献

The restoration and recovery of imperiled mussel species willrequire the re-establishment of populations into historicallyoccupied habitats. The possible existence of genetic differentiationamong populations should be considered before inter-basin transfersare made. Eighty individuals of the federal candidate speciesLexingtonia dolabelloides were sampled from populations in theNorth Fork Holston, Middle Fork Holston, Clinch, Paint Rockand Duck rivers of the Tennessee River basin in the southeasternUnited States. We sequenced 603 base-pairs of a mitochondrialDNA gene (ND-1) and 512 base-pairs of a nuclear DNA gene (ITS-1).Analyses of molecular variation (AMOVA) values for both genesindicated that the majority of variation in L. dolabelloidesresided within populations (82.9–88.3%), with 11.7–17.1%of variation among populations. Haplotype frequencies differedsignificantly among populations for both genes sequenced. Clusteringof haplotypes in minimum-spanning networks did not conform stringentlyto population boundaries, reflecting high within-populationand low between-population variability. Maximum parsimony analysisdid not identify any population as a monophyletic lineage. AMantel test showed no significant correlation between geographicalstream distance and genetic distance, thus not supporting apattern of isolation-by-distance. Overall, results providedsupport to manage fragmented populations of L. dolabelloidesin the Tennessee River drainage as two management units (MUs),but did not provide evidence for the existence of ESUs followingpublished molecular criteria. Dietary carotenoids have been shown to confer immunological benefits to some species of animals in which males also use these pigments to attract mates. Thus, the potential exists for an allocation trade-off between the sexual and immunological functions of carotenoids. Food availability may also influence immune system function. The present study examined the effects of carotenoid and food availability on the resistance of male guppies ( Poecilia reticulata Peters) from four wild populations to the parasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli Harris. Intermediate levels of carotenoid ingestion resulted in the lowest parasite loads, which suggests that carotenoids strengthen parasite resistance at low levels but either benefit parasites or suppress host immunity at high levels. Males raised on the high-food level initially had fewer parasites, suggesting heightened innate immunity relative to males raised on the low-food level. Over the course of the experiment, however, the high-food males supported higher parasite population growth rates than the low-food males. The results obtained emphasize the importance of evaluating the effects of diet on multiple aspects of immune system function, and caution against assuming that positive effects of carotenoids on immunity in one context will automatically translate to other contexts.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 301–309.  相似文献

The deposition of organic compounds from plant roots is a key determinant of rhizosphere microbial activity and community structure. Consequently, C-flow from roots to soil is an important process in coupling plant and microbial productivity, via impacts on microbial nutrient cycling in soil. Experimentally, isotopic tracers (13C or 14C) are used to track C inputs to soil and microbial communities. However, in many such studies the relationship between labelled C-flows and total C-flows are not established, limiting the interpretative value of the results. In this study, we applied steady-state near natural abundance 13CO2 labelling to determine the impact of partial defoliation of Festuca rubra on root exudation. This approach in axenic culture facilitated determination of the contribution of pre- and post-defoliation assimilates both to root C-flow and plant tissues. The results demonstrated that total root exudation was increased in the two days following defoliation. This was concurrent with reduced net CO2 assimilation and reduced allocation of post-defoliation assimilates below-ground and to active root meristems. Through determination of the δ13C of root exudates, it was established that the source of the increased root exudation was pre-defoliation assimilate. However, this response was transient, with reduced deposition of pre- and post-defoliation assimilates from roots during the period 2–4 d following defoliation. The results highlight the limitations of pulse-labelling approaches as a means of quantifying impacts of treatments on root exudation, particularly where the treatment is likely to affect plant C-partitioning or the balance between deposition to, and re-mobilization from, C-storage pools.  相似文献
