Abstract: In a manipulative experiment, we tested effects of select elements of landscape structure and composition on winter survival of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) at Ames Plantation, Tennessee, USA. We hypothesized that abundance of closed canopy forested habitats (52% of the landscape) on Ames diminished usable space for bobwhite and provided usable space for a suite of important predators, thereby contributing to low winter survival. To test this hypothesis we divided a 2,217-ha portion of the property into 4 approximately equal areas. We altered landscape structure and composition by converting approximately 33% of the timber to early successional herbaceous plant communities on 2 treatment sites, which reduced percentage of landscape and edge density of closed canopy forest and increased percentage of landscape in early successional herbaceous communities, and left 2 control sites in their former composition. During one pretreatment year (1998–1999) and 3 posttreatment years (1999–2000, 2000–2001, 2001–2002), we estimated winter (15 Oct-10 Apr) survival on treatment and control sites from a radiomarked sample of 920 bobwhites. We used Cox Proportional Hazard models to test for effects of treatment (forest conversion) and covariates describing landscape structure and composition (% closed canopy forest, % early successional herbaceous, wooded edge density) on winter survival at multiple spatial scales. Winter survival on the treatment sites pooled across the 4 winter seasons was 41% compared to 32% for control sites. Additionally, for each 1 m/ha increase in closed canopy woods edge density within winter covey ranges, risk of mortality increased 0.3%. Our results suggest composition at the landscape scale and landscape structure at the local scale influence winter survival of bobwhite. Management strategies that alter composition and structure and increase usable space may be effective in mitigating winter mortality thereby altering population trajectories. Typical bobwhite management plans focus on improving quality of herbaceous vegetation structure within existing herbaceous patches, however, population processes may work at larger spatial scales influencing design and implementation of conservation programs.  相似文献

Population divergence of phytophagous insects is often coupled to host‐plant shifts and is frequently attributed to the divergent selective environments associated with alternative host‐plants. In some cases, however, divergence is associated with the use of alternative host‐plant organs of a single host species. The basis of within‐host radiations such as these remains poorly understood. In the present stusy, we analysed the radiation of Asteromyia gall midges occurring both within one host plant species and within a single organ on that host. In this system, four morphologically distinct Asteromyia gall forms (morphs) coexist on the leaves of goldenrod Solidago altissima. Our analyses of amplified fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequence data confirm the genetic differentiation among midges from three gall morphs and reveal evidence of a genetically distinct fourth gall morph. The absence of clear gall morph related clades in the mitochondrial DNA derived phylogenies is indicative of incomplete lineage sorting or recent gene flow, suggesting that population divergence among gall forms is recent. We assess the likely history of this radiation and use the results of phylogenetic analyses along with ecological data on phenology and parasitism rates to evaluate potential hypotheses for the mode of differentiation. Primers for 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed and characterized for the endangered oyster mussel Epioblasma capsaeformis from the Clinch River, Tennessee. Microsatellite loci also were tested in four other populations or species. Amplification was successful for most loci in these closely related endangered species or populations; therefore, a high level of flanking sequence similarity was inferred for this group of species and populations. Allelic diversity ranged from nine to 20 alleles/locus, and averaged 13.6/locus. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers to amplify microsatellite loci across freshwater mussel species to conduct population genetics studies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In ciliates, development of the polyploid somatic macronucleus after sexual events involves extensive and reproducible rearrangements of the germ-line genome, including chromosome fragmentation and precise excision of numerous internal sequence elements. In Paramecium aurelia, alternative macronuclear versions of the same germ-line genome can be maternally inherited across sexual generations, showing that rearrangement patterns are not strictly determined by the germ-line sequence. Homology-dependent maternal effects can be evidenced by transformation of the vegetative macronucleus with cloned macronuclear sequences: new fragmentation patterns or internal deletions are specifically induced during differentiation of a new macronucleus, in sexual progeny of transformed clones. Furthermore, transformation of the maternal macronucleus with germ-line sequences containing internal eliminated sequences (short single-copy elements) can result in a specific inhibition of the excision of the same elements in the zygotic macronucleus. These experiments show that the processing of many germ-line sequences in the developing macronucleus is sensitive to the structure and copy number of homologous sequences in the maternal macronucleus. The generality and sequence specificity of this trans-nuclear, epigenetic regulation of rearrangements suggest that it is mediated by pairing interactions between germ-line sequences and sequences imported from the maternal macronucleus.  相似文献

Ephippiger ephippiger is a model organism for studies of sexual selection and phylogeography but little is known about fine‐scale population structure. Available microsatellite loci have null allele problems so we used an enrichment technique to isolate 21 new microsatellite loci for E. ephippiger. We present primer pairs for 10 polymorphic loci (3–11 alleles per locus). Observed heterozygosities at polymorphic loci ranged from 0.118 to 0.787, but several were significantly lower than expected.  相似文献

The acceptability of various plant species to ovipositing carrot flies was weakly, but significantly correlated with the host's suitability for larval development. Both adult host-plant preferences and larval performance as determined in laboratory experiments explained a part of the variation in susceptibility among the various test plants observed in the field. Across the whole set of plant species examined, antixenosis contributed more substantially to resistance than antibiosis, while the reverse seemed to be true for carrot cultivars.  相似文献

Soil moisture affects microbial decay of SOM and rhizosphere respiration (RR) in temperate forest soils, but isolating the response of soil respiration (SR) to summer drought and subsequent wetting is difficult because moisture changes are often confounded with temperature variation. We distinguished between temperature and moisture effects by simulation of prolonged soil droughts in a mixed deciduous forest at the Harvard Forest, Massachusetts. Roofs constructed over triplicate 5 × 5 m2 plots excluded throughfall water during the summers of 2001 (168 mm) and 2002 (344 mm), while adjacent control plots received ambient throughfall and the same natural temperature regime. In 2003, throughfall was not excluded to assess the response of SR under natural weather conditions after two prolonged summer droughts. Throughfall exclusion significantly decreased mean SR rate by 53 mg C m?2 h?1 over 84 days in 2001, and by 68 mg C m?2 h?1 over 126 days in 2002, representing 10–30% of annual SR in this forest and 35–75% of annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of C. The differences in SR were best explained by differences in gravimetric water content in the Oi horizon (r2=0.69) and the Oe/Oa horizon (r2=0.60). Volumetric water content of the A horizon was not significantly affected by throughfall exclusion. The radiocarbon signature of soil CO2 efflux and of CO2 respired during incubations of O horizon, A horizon and living roots allowed partitioning of SR into contributions from young C substrate (including RR) and from decomposition of older SOM. RR (root respiration and microbial respiration of young substrates in the rhizosphere) made up 43–71% of the total C respired in the control plots and 41–80% in the exclusion plots, and tended to increase with drought. An exception to this trend was an interesting increase in CO2 efflux of radiocarbon‐rich substrates during a period of abundant growth of mushrooms. Our results suggest that prolonged summer droughts decrease primarily heterotrophic respiration in the O horizon, which could cause increases in the storage of soil organic carbon in this forest. However, the C stored during two summers of simulated drought was only partly released as increased respiration during the following summer of natural throughfall. We do not know if this soil C sink during drought is transient or long lasting. In any case, differential decomposition of the O horizon caused by interannual variation of precipitation probably contributes significantly to observed interannual variation of NEE in temperate forests.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The abundance and distribution of carnivores and their habitat are key information needed for status assessment, conservation planning, population management, and assessment of the effects of human development on their habitat and populations. We developed a habitat quality rating system, using existing wolverine (Gulo gulo) distribution, wolverine food, ecosystem mapping, and human development data. We used this and empirically derived estimates of wolverine density to predict wolverine distribution and abundance at a provincial scale. Density estimates for wolverines in high-quality habitat averaged 6.2 wolverines/1,000 km2 (95% CI = 4.2–9.5). We predicted mean densities ranging from 0.3/1,000 km2 in rare-quality habitat to 4.1/1,000 km2 in moderate-quality habitat. Our predicted population estimate for wolverines in British Columbia was 3,530 (95% CI = 2,700-4,760). We predicted highest densities of wolverines in interior mountainous regions, moderate densities in interior plateau and boreal forest regions, and low densities in mainland coastal regions and drier interior plateaus. We predicted that wolverines would be rare on Vancouver Island, along the outer mainland coast, and in the dry interior forests, and absent from the Queen Charlotte Islands, interior grassland environments, and areas of intensive urban development.  相似文献

We provide the first molecular phylogeny of the clerid lineage (Coleoptera: Cleridae, Thanerocleridae) within the superfamily Cleroidea to examine the two most recently proposed hypotheses of higher level classification. Phylogenetic relationships of checkered beetles were inferred from approximately ~5000 nt of both nuclear and mitochondrial rDNA (28S, 16S and 12S) and the mitochondrial protein‐coding gene COI. A worldwide sample of ~70 genera representing almost a quarter of generic diversity of the clerid lineage was included and phylogenies were reconstructed using Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood approaches. Results support the monophyly of many proposed subfamilies but were not entirely congruent with either current classification system. The subfamilial relationships within the Cleridae are resolved with support for three main lineages. Tillinae are supported as the sister group to all other subfamilies within the Cleridae, whereas Thaneroclerinae, Korynetinae and a new subfamily formally described here, Epiclininae subf.n ., form a sister group to Clerinae + Hydnocerinae.  相似文献
