One hundred and thirty strains of Erwinia amylovora recovered from Spanish foci of fire blight from 1995 to 2000 were characterised and compared to reference strains from different sources and origins. Their rapid identification was performed by double antibody sandwich indirect (DASI) ELISA, using specific monoclonal antibodies against E. amylovora, and molecular confirmation by PCR using primers specific to the native plasmid pEA29. The Spanish strains of E. amylovora grew on different general and selective media producing typical colonies, except one of them that was deficient in levan production, whereas none of them grew on minimal agar medium with copper sulphate and low content of asparagine. All of them were susceptible to tetracycline, streptomycin, kasugamycin and oxolinic acid. Biochemical characterisation of selected strains by API 20E system revealed a great homogeneity, with 80% of the Spanish strains showing one of the two majority API 20E profiles described for E. amylovora, and the remaining strains showing minor differences. Pathogenicity on pear fruits and hypersensitivity reaction was confirmed, but a delayed reaction was observed for two Spanish strains. The interspecific relationships between egg size and body size in butterflies (Papilionoidea and Hesperiidae), and between size and egg and larval development time, larval trophic specificity, foodplant structure, climate, and phenology were investigated based on a sample of more than 1180 species. The independent contrasts mediod was used to avoid taxonomy-dependent results. Egg size is allometrically related to adult wing length by a slope of 0.43. Based on a subset of species, fecundity is correlated to adult body size, and there is evidence for a compromise between egg number and egg size (relative to adult size) across species. Butterfly size increases in correlation to the mean annual temperature of me species geographic range, but decreases in relation to increased aridity (or die length of the dry season). Larger butterflies tend to have longer larval development times, use large or structurally complex host plants, and are more likely to lay their eggs in batches, irrespective of climate. Larger eggs tend to develop more slowly, and give rise to larvae with longer developmental periods that will result in larger adults. No evidence was found to support a relationship between butterfly body size and polyphagy. A complex pattern of interrelationships links body size (and egg size) to other traits, although correlations other than mat between egg size and body size are generally low. The results suggest the necessity of separating climate and seasonality into components that are relevant to insect life histories in comparative studies. 相似文献

To explore the impact of history on selection and genetic structure at functional loci, we compared patterns of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) variability in two sympatric species of ctenomyid rodents with different demographic backgrounds. Although Ctenomys talarum has experienced a stable demographic history, Ctenomys australis has undergone a recent demographic expansion. Accordingly, we predicted that MHC allele frequency distributions should be more skewed, differences between coding and noncoding regions should be less pronounced, and evidence of current selection on MHC loci should be reduced in C. australis relative to C. talarum. To test these predictions, we compared variation at the MHC class II DRB and DQA genes with that at multiple neutral markers, including DQA intron 2, the mitochondrial control region, and 8–12 microsatellite loci. These analyses supported the first two of our predictions but indicated that estimates of selection (based on ω‐values) were greater for C. australis. Further exploration of these data, however, revealed differences in the time frames over which selection appears to have acted on each species, with evidence of contemporary selection on MHC loci being limited to C. talarum. Sera from eighteen control sheep supposed to be free from parasitism by Oestrus ovis Linnaeus, 1761, and from 100 sheep raised in an enzootic area of O.ovis infestations were tested to detect anti-Oestrus antibodies by double immunodiffusion (DD) and indirect haemagglutination (IH) tests with somatic crude antigens from first (L1), second (L2) and third (L3) instar of O.ovis larvae. At necropsy, eighty-eight out of 100 sheep from the O.ovis infested area were found to be parasitized while the eighteen control ovines did not show Oestrus larvae. Examination of the sera from the parasitized sheep by DD showed positive results of 42% for L1, 59% for L2 and 18% for L3. Screening the sera with IH gave sensitivities of 100% for L1, 100% for L2 and 97.7% for L3. Sheep, naturally parasitized by gastrointestinal nematodes, presented no cross immune reactions in DD tests with the three larval stages of O.ovis or with L2 larvae in IH tests. 相似文献

1. The near‐surface distribution of phytoplankton cells along the thalweg of a canyon‐shaped reservoir (El Gergal, southern Spain) during two surveys is described and interpreted as the result of time‐varying large‐scale circulation patterns, vertical mixing processes and the physiological capacity of algal cells to regulate its position in the water column. 2. Vertical gradients of chlorophyll‐a concentration developed in the water column during the day but disappeared at night, as a result of the shoaling and deepening of the diurnal mixed layer (dml). The changes in the depth of the dml are largely controlled in El Gergal by convectively driven mixing processes. The longitudinal circulation changes, in turn, as a result of weak and diurnal land‐sea breezes. The distribution of algal cells was patchy at all times but did not change during any of the surveys. 3. An expression is proposed to estimate time scales for the development of horizontal patchiness TP based on simple concepts of transport. It is shown that TP is in the order of a week, indicating that horizontal patchiness does not respond immediately to hourly changes in the controlling factors. The magnitude of TP, though, depends on how the vertical distribution of chlorophyll‐a and longitudinal currents change on subdiurnal time scales. In particular, TP is sensitive to the lag existing between the momentum and heat fluxes through the free surface, driving circulation and vertical mixing. 相似文献

Nine microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). In addition, two of five loci tested from harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) produced a single, clear band in Z. californianus, as did one out of five loci from grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and one out of two loci from elephant seal (Mirounga sp.). No locus tested from South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) amplified in Z. californianus. Locus variability was assessed in California sea lions from Los Islotes rookery, Baja California Sur, Mexico. All loci were variable, with allele numbers ranging from three to 12. 相似文献

Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 290–306. The Libros exceptional biota from the Upper Miocene of NE Spain includes abundant frog tadpoles (Rana pueyoi) preserved in finely laminated lacustrine mudstones. The tadpoles exhibit a depressed body, short tail, low tail fins, dorso‐laterally directed eyes and jaw sheaths; these features identify the Libros tadpoles as members of the benthic lentic ecomorphological guild. This, the first ecomorphological reconstruction of a fossil tadpole, supports phylogenetic evidence that this ecology is a conserved ranid feature. The soft‐tissue features of the Libros tadpoles are characterized by several modes of preservation. The space occupied previously by the brain is defined by calcium carbonate, the nerve cord is defined by calcium phosphate, and jaw sheaths and bone marrow are preserved as organic remains. Gut contents (and coprolites adjacent to specimens) comprise ingested fine‐grained sedimentary detritus and epiphyton. The body outline and the eyespots, nares, abdominal cavity, notochord, caudal myotomes and fins are defined by a carbonaceous bacterial biofilm. A similar biofilm in adult specimens of R. pueyoi from Libros defines only the body outline, not any internal anatomical features. In the adult frogs, but not in the tadpoles, calcium phosphate and calcium sulphate precipitated in association with integumentary tissues. Three sympatrically occurring members of a cichlid fish species complex from Lake Malawi have previously been reported to show assortative mating in the field. Offspring from three experimental tanks each housing both sexes of all three members of this complex were screened at one to four microsatellite loci to determine paternity. Reproductive isolation was found to persist without exception under laboratory conditions, providing strong evidence for behavioural barriers to mating. Direct mate choice is suggested as the process preventing interbreeding. The results are interpreted with reference to the rapid and explosive evolution of the cichlid group. 相似文献

The levels of integration, patterns of allometric growth and size-related differences in skull dimensions of the caecilian Dermophis mexicanus were investigated by means of univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistics. The analyses indicate that (1) most but not all measurements of the skull arc more variable in adults than in juveniles; (2) growth is allometric and results in changes in shape between juveniles and adults; (3) there is a high level of integration of all variables by general size; and (4) homologous paired measurements show concordant allometric trends and are integrated beyond the sole effect of general size. These analyses provide baseline data, a set of hypotheses and a methodological framework for comparative studies of patterns of variation and integration among caecilians and among other vertebrates. 相似文献
