Variations in scales from nine regions on the flank of teleost fish were examined from the point of view of functional adaptation and with regard to which scales best differentiate species. Three teleost species were selected; two are from the genus Mugil, M. cephalus and M. curema, which are phylogenetically distant from the third, Dicentrarchus labrax. Scale form was described using seven landmarks, the coordinates of which were subjected to generalized Procrustes analysis followed by principal components analysis. Principal component scores were submitted to cross‐validated discriminant analysis to assess the utility of each scale in identifying species. The best discrimination (98%) was obtained with the scale from the central‐dorsal area. Scales from the anterior and central zones are relatively wide dorsoventrally and narrow anteroposteriorly. This appears to be related to the profile of the lateral body wall and with subcarangiform swimming. Scales from the posterior region are anteroposteriorly long and dorsoventrally narrow, this shape possibly being related to thrust. Despite the wide phylogenetic separation between mullets and D. labrax, the pattern of scale variation is similar. This may imply strong functional convergence, although studies of sister taxa with different swimming modes are required to confirm this. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 834–844.  相似文献

Starvation and enforced virginity induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the oocytes of female cockroaches of Nauphoeta cinerea, yet the life‐history outcome differs among fed and starved virgins. Consistent with the hypothesis that oocytes are absorbed to reallocate resources, apoptosis is followed by an increase in future reproduction and longevity in starved virgins. However, apoptosis induction by enforced virginity in fed females results in reduced fecundity and longevity. It is predicted that this life‐history outcome occurs because oocyte apoptosis under these conditions is not part of an adaptive reproductive strategy but simply is the result of cellular ageing and clearance to maintain reproductive synchrony. In the present study, reproductive and somatic allocation are examined over time to test whether resources are recouped by the fat body, reinvested in reproduction or lost altogether when apoptosis is associated with enforced virginity. To assay reproductive investment, the number of ovarioles is counted, apoptosis levels are analysed and the size of all oocytes within the vitellaerium is measured. To assay somatic investment, dry fat body mass is measured. In conjunction with apoptosis, the number of ovarioles declines, whereas the size of surviving oocytes increases. By contrast to the cellular ageing hypothesis, apoptosis associated with enforced virginity appears to be adaptive if resources from sacrificed oocytes are recycled into the survivors to maintain the quality of ageing oocytes. This reinvestment in current reproduction may trade‐off with future reproductive capacity.  相似文献

The marine hoplonemertean Oerstedia dorsalis is considered to be a highly polymorphic species with extensive geographic distribution. We show, based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 16S and nuclear internal transcribed spacer sequences, that there are genetic subsets withing this species. Seventy-one specimens of various colours from different geographic localities (in Europe) were sequenced and analysed using statistical parsimony and Bayesian analysis. Both analyses supported nine major clades. We conclude that O. dorsalis hides different species with geographic resolution. These species, however, appear to be polymorphic as well, and we find no diagnostic features in pigmentation or external characters to separate species within this complex.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 556–567.  相似文献

A new genus of Gliridae, Simplomys gen. nov. is proposed. It contains glirids with a simplified dental pattern from the European Early and Middle Miocene. Simplomys gen. nov. includes several species originally described as Pseudodryomys such as Simplomys simplicidens, Simplomys robustus, Simplomys julii, and Simplomys aljaphi. In addition, a new species, Simplomys meulenorum sp. nov. , is proposed from the Spanish Miocene. The species of this genus share not only a very reduced and simplified dental morphology, but also unique dental proportions that clearly separate them from any other genera of Gliridae. Simplomys gen. nov. is recorded in most of the fossil faunas from the Early and Middle Miocene of the Iberian Peninsula, and shows the maximum diversity in this area during Mammal Neogene Zones MN 3 and MN 4. The genus has been also recorded in other European countries such as France, Germany, and Switzerland, conferring to this very characteristic taxon an important role for biochronological correlations within the European continent. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 157 , 622–652.  相似文献

Blue‐tailed skinks (genus Plestiodon) are a common component of the terrestrial herpetofauna throughout their range in eastern Eurasia and North and Middle America. Plestiodon species are also frequent subjects of ecological and evolutionary research, yet a comprehensive, well‐supported phylogenetic framework does not yet exist for this genus. We construct a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of Plestiodon using Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of a nine‐locus data set comprising 8308 base pairs of DNA, sampled from 38 of the 43 species in the genus. We evaluate potential gene tree/species tree discordance by conducting phylogenetic analyses of the concatenated and individual locus data sets, as well as employing coalescent‐based methods. Specifically, we address the placement of Plestiodon within the evolutionary tree of Scincidae, as well as the phylogenetic relationships between Plestiodon species, and their taxonomy. Given our sampling of major Scincidae lineages, we also re‐evaluate ‘deep’ relationships within the family, with the goal of resolving relationships that have been ambiguous in recent molecular phylogenetic analyses. We infer strong support for several scincid relationships, including a major clade of ‘scincines’ and the inter‐relationships of major Mediterranean and southern African genera. Although we could not estimate the precise phylogenetic affinities of Plestiodon with statistically significant support, we nonetheless infer significant support for its inclusion in a large ‘scincine’ clade exclusive of Acontinae, Lygosominae, Brachymeles, and Ophiomorus. Plestiodon comprises three major geographically cohesive clades. One of these clades is composed of mostly large‐bodied species inhabiting northern Indochina, south‐eastern China (including Taiwan), and the southern Ryukyu Islands of Japan. The second clade comprises species inhabiting central China (including Taiwan) and the entire Japanese archipelago. The third clade exclusively inhabits North and Middle America and the island of Bermuda. A vast majority of interspecific relationships are strongly supported in the concatenated data analysis, but there is nonetheless significant conflict amongst the individual gene trees. Coalescent‐based gene tree/species tree analyses indicate that incongruence amongst the nuclear loci may severely obscure the phylogenetic inter‐relationships of the primarily small‐bodied Plestiodon species that inhabit the central Mexican highlands. These same analyses do support the sister relationship between Plestiodon marginatus Hallowell, 1861 and Plestiodon stimpsonii (Thompson, 1912), and differ with the mitochondrial DNA analysis that supports Plestiodon elegans (Boulenger, 1887) + P. stimpsonii. Finally, because the existing Plestiodon taxonomy is a poor representation of evolutionary relationships, we replace the existing supraspecific taxonomy with one congruent with our phylogenetic results. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 165 , 163–189.  相似文献

Positive aboveground biomass trends have been reported from old-growth forests across the Amazon basin and hypothesized to reflect a large-scale response to exterior forcing. The result could, however, be an artefact due to a sampling bias induced by the nature of forest growth dynamics. Here, we characterize statistically the disturbance process in Amazon old-growth forests as recorded in 135 forest plots of the RAINFOR network up to 2006, and other independent research programmes, and explore the consequences of sampling artefacts using a data-based stochastic simulator. Over the observed range of annual aboveground biomass losses, standard statistical tests show that the distribution of biomass losses through mortality follow an exponential or near-identical Weibull probability distribution and not a power law as assumed by others. The simulator was parameterized using both an exponential disturbance probability distribution as well as a mixed exponential–power law distribution to account for potential large-scale blowdown events. In both cases, sampling biases turn out to be too small to explain the gains detected by the extended RAINFOR plot network. This result lends further support to the notion that currently observed biomass gains for intact forests across the Amazon are actually occurring over large scales at the current time, presumably as a response to climate change.  相似文献

The late Paleozoic earth experienced alternation between glacial and non-glacial climates at multiple temporal scales, accompanied by atmospheric CO2 fluctuations and global warming intervals, often attended by significant vegetational changes in equatorial latitudes of Pangaea. We assess the nature of climate–vegetation interaction during two time intervals: middle–late Pennsylvanian transition and Pennsylvanian–Permian transition, each marked by tropical warming and drying. In case study 1, there is a catastrophic intra-biomic reorganization of dominance and diversity in wetland, evergreen vegetation growing under humid climates. This represents a threshold-type change, possibly a regime shift to an alternative stable state. Case study 2 is an inter-biome dominance change in western and central Pangaea from humid wetland and seasonally dry to semi-arid vegetation. Shifts between these vegetation types had been occurring in Euramerican portions of the equatorial region throughout the late middle and late Pennsylvanian, the drier vegetation reaching persistent dominance by Early Permian. The oscillatory transition between humid and seasonally dry vegetation appears to demonstrate a threshold-like behavior but probably not repeated transitions between alternative stable states. Rather, changes in dominance in lowland equatorial regions were driven by long-term, repetitive climatic oscillations, occurring with increasing intensity, within overall shift to seasonal dryness through time. In neither case study are there clear biotic or abiotic warning signs of looming changes in vegetational composition or geographic distribution, nor is it clear that there are specific, absolute values or rates of environmental change in temperature, rainfall distribution and amount, or atmospheric composition, approach to which might indicate proximity to a terrestrial biotic-change threshold.  相似文献

Zygotic embryos of taro, Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorumwere examined using both light and scanning electron microscopyand cultured on Linsmaier-Skoog (LS) medium without the additionof growth regulators. Embryos present within mature seed consistof a hypocotyl-root axis and an undeveloped cotyledon and aresurrounded by two major types of endosperm cells, aleurone andstarchy endosperm. Embryos cultured on LS medium developed intomature plants only in the presence of endosperm tissue. Excisedembryos turned green after 2–4 d in culture and reacheda rapid growth period between days 4 and 6. Culture of taroembryos leading to viable plantlet development depends upon(1) removal of the outer and inner integument, and (2) the presenceof endosperm tissue (including an intact aleurone layer). Forty-six species of the genus Dolichoiulus , all endemic, occur on the Canary Islands The highest number of species occur on the largest, highest island (Tenerife); fewest occur on Lanzarote, Fuerteventura (low, xeric), El Hierro and La Palma (small, remote). Most of the Dolichoiulus species live on one island only, as in other endemic Canarian species swarms. The scarcity of pluri-insular Dolichoiulus species, in connection with information on phylogeny, suggests that speciation has mainly taken place within individual islands. Distribution patterns are partly governed by habitat differences between species, but vicariance patterns between species living in the same kind of habitat are evident on La Gomera and Tenerife. Dolichoiulus species occur in all kinds of natural habitats. Laurisilva and cave species are generally paler than other species. In the laurisilva of eastern Tenerife, microhabitat differentiation between species is pronounced. In some, but far from all, cases, species coexisting in the same microhabitat are of different sizes. The ancestral colonizing species of Dolichoiulus is/are hypothesized to have been small and to have lived in coastal habitats. Colonization of higher altitudes was usually accompanied by an increase in body size. Invasion of the laurisilva was usually accompanied by a habitat shift from the ground layer to logs.  相似文献
