1. For many fish species, survival during early life stages is linked to the size and energetic condition of females prior to reproduction. For example, females in good energetic condition are often more fecund and produce larger eggs and offspring than those in poor condition. 2. We measured the characteristics of female yellow perch (Perca flavescens) that may influence annual population fluctuations. From 2005 to 2007, we measured spatial variation in female reproductive traits, such as age, length, mass and energy density (J g?1) of somatic tissues and ovaries among four spawning aggregations of yellow perch in western and central Lake Erie. 3. Maternal traits, such as somatic energy density and spawner age distribution, differed between the western and central basin, whereas reproductive traits, such as fecundity and ovarian energy density, differed across years. 4. To understand the implications of observed differences in demographic rates (growth and mortality rates) between basins, we developed a deterministic model to simulate the total egg production in the western and central basins under different scenarios of fishing mortality. 5. High growth rates and low mortality rates combined to produce higher modelled estimates of total egg production in the central than in the western basin, and a larger proportion of eggs were produced by old age classes in the central basin than in the western basin. 6. Our results demonstrate that changing harvest levels for populations with different demographic rates can influence total reproductive output through complex interactions between age‐specific mortality, growth and size‐specific fecundity, which has implications for the population dynamics of yellow perch and related species across a broad geographic range.  相似文献

The life stages of C. crozetensis whose larvae have raking head-fans are described. Functional anatomical study of the fans compared with the filtering fans of normal Simuliidae together with SEM study of first instar larvae of Gymnopais, Twinnia and Prosimulium enable the evolution of cephilic fans to be inferred as follows: a group of lateral labral bristles evolved in two directions:

    To complete loss in Gymnopais and Twinnia whose ancestors therefore never possessed fully developed fans.

    Elaboration of the group of bristles first into raking organs, as in Crozetia , and later into even more complex filtering organs.


It is shown that unflexing of Simuliid fans depends on elastic energy stored in resilin-containing components deformed during flexing.
Adults of Crozetia mate on stones in streams on lie de la Possession, Ties Crozet. The females are non-biting and rest near streams while their eggs mature, thus forming a sub-Antarctic parallel to certain sub-Arctic Simuliidae.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Gamebird chick survival is dependent on invertebrate availability, and the ability to access insect prey is an important characteristic defining brood habitat quality. Different mixes of warm-season grasses and forbs were established to improve the habitat quality of fields enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) for gamebirds in the Southern Plains. We analyzed the feeding ecology of human-imprinted, 4- to 10-day-old ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) chicks in wheat fields and 4 types of conservation practices (CP) fields enrolled in CRP (CP10, improved CP10, CP2, and CP25) in western Kansas, USA, during June and July, 2004 and 2005. Foraging rates were greatest for bobwhite chicks in improved CP10 and CP25 fields and greatest for pheasant chicks in CP10 and CP25 fields. Vegetation characteristics such as bare ground cover appear to have a significant impact on insect selection, because the diet was more diverse for both species in fields with more bare ground. The CP25 fields provided the best combination of mobility and diet breadth for both species. Although herbicide-treated wheat fields had low feeding rates, we determined non-herbicide-treated fields (i.e., weedy wheat) provided easy mobility and feeding rates similar to CRP fields. We suggest that management of vegetation to benefit gamebirds does not affect species equally. Feeding rates of bobwhite chicks were sensitive to vegetation-influenced mobility. Management of CRP fields for both pheasant and bobwhite chicks can be reconciled by practices that permit more open space at ground level, such as light disking or burning, to permit easier movement for chicks.  相似文献

1. Field experiments were conducted to examine interactions between larvae of the caddisfly Gumaga nigricula and the algae (primarily diatoms) located on their sand grain cases. Floating experimental enclosures were placed in sunlit pools of a California stream. Treatments applied to occupied cases, or to those from which caddisflies had been removed, included variations in grazer density, addition of nutrients, and modification of illumination using shade cloth. 2. Neither faecal-enriched agar in empty cases nor injections of faecal material into plugged cases affected case chlorophyll a concentration; injected nutrients (N and P), however, did increase chlorophyll a concentration. Faecal material may be nutrient poor, or nutrients may not be readily released. In addition, the relatively impermeable case wall may reduce the likelihood that nutrients from caddisflies reach the algae on the outer case surface. 3. Although a Gumaga larva may graze algae from its own case, grazing by conspecifics and the caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis causes a greater reduction in the chlorophyll a content of cases. 4. Chlorophyll a content of empty cases was decreased by experimental reduction of light. Because of shading associated with burrowing, chlorophyll a content of cases occupied by Gumaga was low and was unaffected by experimental light reduction. 5. Removal of Gumaga from its case results in rapid accrual of algae. Thus, the net effect of larval presence is to diminish the algal content of its case.  相似文献

Abstract Leptophlebiidae is among the largest and most diverse groups of extant mayflies (Ephemeroptera), but little is known of family‐level phylogenetic relationships. Using two nuclear genes (the D2 + D3 region of 28S ribosomal DNA and histone H3) and maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI), we inferred the evolutionary relationships of 69 leptophlebiids sampled from six continents and representing 30 genera plus 11 taxa of uncertain taxonomic rank from Madagascar and Papua New Guinea. Although we did not recover monophyly of the Leptophlebiidae, monophyly of two of the three leptophlebiid subfamilies, Habrophlebiinae and Leptophlebiinae, was recovered with moderate to strong support in most analyses. The Atalophlebiinae was rendered paraphyletic as a result of the inclusion of members of Ephemerellidae or the Leptophlebiinae clade. For the species‐rich Atalophlebiinae, four groups of taxa were recovered with moderate to strong branch support: (i) an endemic Malagasy clade, (ii) a Paleoaustral group, a pan‐continental cluster with members drawn from across the southern hemisphere, (iii) a group, uniting fauna from North America, southeast Asia and Madagascar, which we call the Choroterpes group and (iv) a group uniting three New World genera, Thraulodes, Farrodes and Traverella. Knowledge of the phylogenetic relationships of the leptophlebiids will aid in future studies of morphological evolution and biogeographical patterns in this highly diverse and speciose family of mayflies.  相似文献
