Root Development and Aerenchyma Formation in Two Wheat Cultivars and One Triticale Cultivar Grown in Stagnant Agar and Aerated Nutrient Solution 总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6
Stagnant nutrient solution containing 0.1% agar and with anextremely low oxygen level (stagnant agar solution)was used to simulate the gaseous composition and slow gas diffusionof waterlogged soils. Comparisons were made between the growthof two wheat cultivars(Triticum aestivum,cvs. Gamenya and Kite)and one triticale cultivar(Triticosecale,cv. Muir) grown instagnant relative to aerated solution. For all genotypes tested,immersion of roots in stagnant agar solution resulted in thedeath of the entire seminal root system and led to profuse branchingof the laterals of the nodal roots. In the stagnant agar solutionaerenchyma, as a percentage of the total cross sectional areaof nodal roots, was 18% for Muir, 14% for Kite and 12% for Gamenya;the roots of species with more aerenchyma also attained a longermaximum root length as predicted by the model of Armstrong (in:Woolhouse HW, ed.Advances in botanical research, vol. 7. London:Academic Press, 1979). Muir also had a nodal root/shoot freshweight ratio of 0.5 compared with 0.20.3 in Kite andGamenya. SYNOPSIS. Mate choice is a critically important determinantof reproductive success. Because of its significance in theevolutionary process, it has received a great deal of attentionfrom animal behaviorists interested in ultimate causes of behavior.Much less effort has been directed at uncovering the physiologicalmechanisms of mate choice, including those operating duringontogeny that lead to adult mate preferences. As a result ofnatural and sexual selection, many aspects of mate choice aresexually dimorphic. How do adult males and females of the samespecies come to show different mating partner preferences? Onepossibility is that sex steroid hormones play important roles,acting either during early development to permanently establishsex differences or during adulthood to facilitate their expression,roles similar to the organizational and activational effectsof sex steroids on sexually dimorphic copulatory and courtshipbehavior patterns. This review (1) summarizes what is knownabout hormones and mate choice, highlighting those results mostrelevant to understanding proximate causation from an evolutionaryperspective; (2) describes recent work from the author's labtesting an organizational hormone hypothesis of mate choice,focusing on a particularly widespread and robust aspect of matechoicepreference for opposite sex partnersin apair bonding speciesthe zebra finch; and (3) suggestssome future directions for research that might integrate ultimateand proximate causation. 相似文献

Conditions and maintenance of growth were chosen so that plantsof Clusia minor L. were obtained which showed the C3- and CAM-modes of CO2-exchange, respectively. C. minor is known to accumulateconsiderable amounts of citric acid in addition to malic acidduring the dark-phase of CAM. 14CO2-pulse-chase experiments were performed with these plants.Patterns of labelling during the pulse and redistribution oflabel during the chase in the C3-mode were as expected for C3-photosynthesis.Pulse-labelling in the CAM-mode during the last hour of thelight period, during the first part of the dark period and duringthe last hour of the dark period always led to an almost exclusiveincorporation of label into malate. Redistribution of labelfrom malate after the pulse at the end of the dark period duringthe chase in the subsequent light period followed the patternexpected for light-dependent reassimilation of CO2 remobilizedfrom malate in CAM during the light period. During the chasesin the dark period, label was transferred from l4C-malate tocitrate. This suggests that during accumulation of citric acidin the dark period of CAM in C. minor, citrate is synthesizedin the mitochondria from malate or oxaloacetate after formationof malate via phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase. The experiment also showed that no labelled compounds are exportedfrom leaves in the CAM-mode during the dark period. In plantsof the C3-mode the roots proved to be strong sinks. In an attempt to assess some of the factors which determineleaf arrangement at the shoot apex, a study has been made ofphyllotaxis in the fern Dryopteris aristata. It is shown thatclockwise and counter-clockwise spirals occur with equal frequencyboth in field collections and in adventitious and experimentallyinduced buds which arise on the rhizomes and apices of plantsgrown in the laboratory. In addition to the two common spiralarrangements, a form with bijugate phyllotaxis has been noted.It is concluded that the three types of leaf arrangement arenot under direct genetic control, but rather are dependent oncircumstances of growth at the apex. 相似文献

The origin and early development of angle meristems (AMs) inSelaginella martensii were studied using a high-resolution mouldand cast technique for scanning electron microscopy, in conjunctionwith light microscopy. Both dorsal and ventral AMs originatein the apical region shortly after the most recent bifurcationof the shoot apex. AMs appear to arise from a single superficialinitial cell, which subsequently undergoes an oblique anticlinaldivision to establish the apical cell of the AM. The AM apicalcell has a relatively short active life and divides laterallyusually only six to twelve times; most cells of the AM originatefrom repeated divisions of apical cell derivatives. Dorsal andventral AMs show similar developmental sequences, although theydiffer slightly in time of appearance. Ventral AMs originatedfirst, dorsal AMs appearing shortly thereafter. At a given branchpoint, the ventral AM is typically larger than the correspondingdorsal AM. Both dorsal and ventral AMs grow out as rhizophores(aerial roots), although ventral AM development greatly precedesdorsal AM development. It is possible that the apparent earlierdecrease in apical cell activity in dorsal AMs compared to ventralAMs could account for the lag in dorsal AM development as arhizophore at a given branch point. There has been considerable uncertainty about the abundance estimation of Loxodonta africana within tropical lowland moist forests in Zaire. We surveyed a 15,570 km2 area within the forests of eastern Zaire using transect sampling methods and estimated the elephant population to be 3720 (range 2300–5000) individuals. Dung pile densities were significantly different between adjacent settlement, deep forest, and deep forest core strata, with the most remote area harbouring the highest density. Evidence of elephant poaching was encountered throughout the survey area suggesting that elephant populations continue to be at severe risk. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Although studies have addressed effects of abrupt transitions in habitat type (e.g., forest-clear-cut or forest-field edges) on amphibian movements, little is known about effects of more subtle habitat transitions on patterns of migration and habitat use in amphibians. We used radiotelemetry to study movement patterns of juvenile gopher frogs (Rana capito) emigrating from ponds that were surrounded by longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) forest that varied in structure as a result of fire suppression. Our primary purpose was to determine if frogs emigrate directionally from their natal ponds and select habitat at random during their first month following metamorphosis. We found that frogs emigrated in nonrandom directions from ponds that were surrounded by heterogeneous habitat and selected fire-maintained habitat that was associated with an open canopy, few hardwood trees, small amounts of leaf litter, and large amounts of wiregrass (Aristida beyrichiana). Fire-maintained habitat contained higher densities of burrows excavated by gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) and small mammals, which are the priamry refuge sites for both juvenile and adult gopher frogs. Frogs moved up to 691 m from their natal ponds, frequently crossed dirt roads, and even seemed to use these roads as migration corridors. To maintain suitable terrestrial habitat for gopher frogs, including habitat used by migrating individuals, it is important to apply frequent prescribed fire to uplands surrounding breeding ponds that lead all the way to the edges of breeding ponds, as well as through ponds during periodic droughts. 相似文献

Organisms must make important decisions on how to allocate resources to reproduction. We investigated allocation decisions in the social wasp Vespula maculifrons to understand how social insects make reproductive choices. We first determined how annual colonies apportioned resources to growth and reproduction by analysing developing brood. In contrast to expectations, colonies invested in both growth (workers) and reproduction (males) simultaneously. In addition, colonies showed evidence of producing males in pulses and reversing their reproductive choices by decreasing investment in males late in the season. This reversal is consistent with theory suggesting that colonies decrease production in males if fitness of late emerging males is low. To further investigate reproductive decisions within colonies, we determined if the male mates of multiply-mated queens varied in their reproductive success over time. Sperm use by queens did vary over time suggesting that male success may depend on sperm clumping within the female reproductive tract. Finally, we tested if colony sex ratio conformed to expectations under kin selection theory that nestmate relatedness would positively correlate with investment in new queens if workers controlled sex allocation. Surprisingly, the proportion of queens produced by colonies was negatively correlated with nestmate relatedness, suggesting that allocation may be shaped by advantages arising from increased genetic diversity resulting from multiple mating by queens. Overall, our study suggests that the reproductive decisions of colonies are flexible and may depend both on environmental cues arising from energetic needs of the colony and genetic cues arising from mating behaviours of queens. 相似文献
