Wider attention to Fry's (1947) "final preferendum" paradigmwould facilitate comparative studies of temperature preference(behavioral thermoregulation) among different animal groups.According to Fry's bipartite definition, the final preferendumis that temperature at which preference and acclimation areequal, and to which an animal in a thermal gradient will finallygravitate regardless of its prior thermal experience (acclimation).This paradigm is helpful in distinguishing between acute thermalpreferenda (measured within 2 hr or less after placing an animalin a thermal gradient), which are influenced by acclimationtemperature, and the species-specific final preferendum (measured2496 hr after placement in the gradient), which is essentiallyindependent of prior acclimation because reacclimation occursduring the gravitation process. The paradigm does not take intoaccount non-thermal acclimatization influences (e.g., season,photoperiod, age, light intensity, salinity, disease, nutrition,pollutants, biotic interactions) which can also affect temperaturepreference. However, a graph of acutely preferred temperaturesversus acclimation temperatures can be employed to determinean equivalent acclimation temperature for any given acclimatizationstate, as a simple means of quantifying acclimatization statesresulting from interactions of many influences. This paradigm,developed for use with fishes, can also be applied to otherectothermic taxa, although it is most easily employed with aquaticorganisms because of the simplicity of specifying aquatic thermalenvironments in terms of water temperature alone. 1. Refuges can be functionally important if they harbour sufficient organisms during disturbance to augment population recovery. I quantified the protection of stream algae in crevice refuges using the applied, severe disturbance of scrubbing. Scrubbing effectively removed visible surface algae, and algae remaining on stones were considered protected. 2. In a field experiment, substrata with different quantities of crevice (glass bottles; greywacke; schist; pumice) were incubated in a channelised stream. The possible influence of growth conditions was investigated concurrently; half of the substrata were suspended in the water column, the rest were placed on the bottom (providing differential access to grazers and exposing them to different flow conditions). 3. Rougher substrata had greater total algal biomass than smoother substrata; this pattern resulted from more algal biomass in crevices of the rougher substrata. Protection from scrubbing ranged from about 5% of total algal biomass on glass and greywacke to 80% on pumice. In contrast, algal biomass removed by scrubbing was similar among the experimental substrata. Suspended substrata had more chironomid grazers than those on the bottom, and also greater algal biomass, possibly because of high algal concentrations in the chironomid retreats. 4. A survey of stones from three rivers supported the experimental results; namely, rough pumice protected more algae from scrubbing than did smoother greywacke. 5. In a separate experimental assay, there was no difference in algal growth on agar plates with and without added powdered rock substrata, suggesting that crevice characteristics and not substratum chemistry produced the differences in algal assemblages between rough and smooth surfaces. 6. Subjective impressions of pitch for 80 different sinusoidal vibrotactile stimuli delivered to the index finger were measured by free magnitude estimation in four subjects. In three of the subjects, pitch at a given frequency decreased as stimulus amplitude increased. The data of these subjects were well described by a model of pitch based on the relative levels of activation of the three major tactile channels. The main element in this model was a ratio of P channel activity to the sum of the activity levels of the P, NPI, and NPIII channels. Activity levels of the channels were estimated on the basis of the psychophysical literature, including a study of vibrotactile loudness using the same subjects and stimuli as those employed here. A fourth subject, whose pattern of loudness judgments had previously been shown to differ from those of the other subjects, did not conform to this pitch model: her data revealed significant increases in pitch with increases in amplitude, and appear to reflect an inability to combine signals across vibrotactile channels. Pitch changes resulting from vibrotactile adaptation were directionally consistent with our ratio model: pitch was slightly increased by adaptation to a 25 Hz stimulus, and slightly decreased by 200 Hz adaptation. 相似文献

Background
Although a preponderance of pre-clinical data demonstrates the immunosuppressive potential of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), significant heterogeneity and lack of critical quality attributes (CQAs) based on immunosuppressive capacity likely have contributed to inconsistent clinical outcomes. This heterogeneity exists not only between MSC lots derived from different donors, tissues and manufacturing conditions, but also within a given MSC lot in the form of functional subpopulations. We therefore explored the potential of functionally relevant morphological profiling (FRMP) to identify morphological subpopulations predictive of the immunosuppressive capacity of MSCs derived from multiple donors, manufacturers and passages.Methods
We profiled the single-cell morphological response of MSCs from different donors and passages to the functionally relevant inflammatory cytokine interferon (IFN)-γ. We used the machine learning approach visual stochastic neighbor embedding (viSNE) to identify distinct morphological subpopulations that could predict suppression of activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in a multiplexed quantitative assay.Results
Multiple IFN-γ–stimulated subpopulations significantly correlated with the ability of MSCs to inhibit CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell activation and served as effective CQAs to predict the immunosuppressive capacity of additional manufactured MSC lots. We further characterized the emergence of morphological heterogeneity following IFN-γ stimulation, which provides a strategy for identifying functional subpopulations for future single-cell characterization and enrichment techniques.Discussion

Large cassid gastropods found in close association with Oligocene mysticete whale skeletons in a deep water setting indicate a novel trophic relationship. Bones of early mysticetes are preserved in close association with a recurring assemblage of bivalve taxa that are common components of fossil and recent hydrothermal vent and cold methane seep localities. Living members of these bivalve groups harbor sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria and comparisons with recent whale-falls indicate that they utilized bone-oil seepage. But unlike recent whale-falls, this fossil invertebrate assemblage is volumetrically dominated by large individuals of the cassid gastropod Liracassis apta that are preserved with their apertures adhering to the bone surfaces. Comparisons with recent cassoidean taxa and their ecological settings suggests that Liracassis apta belongs to the subfamily Oocorythinae, not Cassininae, and was an opportunistic scavenger in deep water, low oxygen environments. Oocorythine gastropods radiated rapidly on the northeastern Pacific margin during the Late Eocene and Oligocene to become the most commonly recorded gastropod in shelf and slope settings. 相似文献
