The ultrastructure of the primordial blood cells in the first and second hematopoietic lobes of the late second and third instar larva and prepupa of Drosophila melanogaster was compared with the ultrastructure of the blood cells found freely in the larval hemolymph. Within the hematopoietic lobes two principal cell-types were detected: (i) the prohemocytes and proplasmatocytes, and (ii) different developmental stages of crystal cells., Prohemocytes are characterized by a ribsome-rich cytoplasm, showing small amounts of mitochondria, rough ER and Golgi complexes and few primary lyosomes. Prohemocytes differentiate into proplasmatocytes. When released into the hemolymph they transform further into plasmato-, podo-, and lamellocytes. This differentiation pathway is characterized by a gradual, numerical increase of cytoplasmic organelles, the development of the lysosomal system and the aquisition of the capacity for phagocytosis and melanin formation. The differentiation of a procrystal cell into a crystal cell involves a number of intermediate stages, during which the crystalline material is produced, accumulated, and crystallized. Primary and secondary lysosomes in the primordial blood cells of the hematopoietic organs as well as the free blood cells in the hemolymph were identified cytochemically with the help of the acid phosphatase test. The capacity for melanin synthesis was studied with the phenol- and polyphenol oxidase test.  相似文献

Abstract

Life history theory predicts that the patterns of resource allocation in animals are associated with different strategies, selected in the course of evolution. In the present study, the life history of Leptinaria unilamellata was characterized under laboratory conditions. We determined the growth, reproduction, and longevity patterns of this species and elucidated the strategy related to the development of embryos, through direct observations and examination of the morphology of the gravid uterus. Furthermore, we attempted to analyze the glycogen and galactogen contents of the albumen gland, digestive gland and cephalopedal mass in order to understand energy allocation to life history traits, for three life stages. Leptinaria unilamellata's life history is characterized by great longevity, a short juvenile phase, early sexual maturity, and repeated reproductive events, with little reproductive effort at each event and some mortality shortly after the first reproduction. In the terraria, we found juveniles but no eggs. However, the results of the anatomical study showed no morphological connection between the embryos and the parental organism. Thus, this species should be described as ovoviviparous rather than viviparous. Egg retention in the parent organism is the primary cause of the release of juveniles, instead of eggs, enabling the offspring to withstand environmental stress. The higher quantity of galactogen found in the adults' albumen gland, as compared to juveniles and senescent individuals, as well as the ratio of glycogen to galactogen, reveal the allocation of energy to reproduction rather than to growth. The remaining energy is directed to the maintenance of omeostasis. Such pattern was confirmed by the low levels of glycogen and galactogen observed in the senescent stage, compared to the juvenile and adult stages. In the life strategy of L. unilamellata, the distribution of the reproductive effort among many events associated with ovoviviparity indicates a long-term investment in reproductive success.  相似文献

Rubiaceae contains the largest number of distylous species in the Angiosperms, but the evolution and control of distyly is poorly understood in this group. Atypical distylous populations and species have been described in this family and associated with disturbance, pollination failure and impaired reproductive success. Some of these atypical taxa belong to Psychotria, the largest genus in the family. In the present study, we investigate the pollination and breeding biology of Psychotria carthagenensis Jacq., a widely distributed species that has been described as typically distylous. Fieldwork was carried out mainly at the Panga Ecological Station, in Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. We carried out phenological observations, floral biology studies and hand pollination experiments within the Panga Ecological Station population. We complemented these data with herbarium and field surveys from elsewhere in Brazil. The studied population bloomed at the beginning of the rains (September–December). The main pollinators were Bombus and small Halictidae bees. The Panga Ecological Station population presented pin‐monomorphism with only two thrum individuals in more than 100 flowering individuals surveyed. Hand pollinations at the Panga Ecological Station showed self‐compatibility and intramorph compatibility. Typical distyly and isoplethy were found in other areas and both morphs appeared in herbarium material. However, pin‐monomorphism was also observed elsewhere in Brazil. Typical distyly, pin‐monomorphism and homostyly observed concurrently in Brazilian populations of P. carthagenensis indicate that alternative reproductive strategies, probably favoring selfing, appear to have developed independently in this species.  相似文献

Felids morphology and ecological role as hypercarnivores are quite constant, despite considerable body size variation among species. Skull morphological and functional features of 34 extant cat species were evaluated under a phylogenetic framework of the Felidae. Twenty skull measurements were analysed through Principal Component Analysis to assess the species morphofunctional spaces. Force indexes were obtained from static equilibrium equations to infer jaw mechanics. Correlations between morphological, functional, and ecological traits were tested by phylogenetically independent contrasts. In spite of the general cat‐like pattern, specific features on the skulls allowed differentiation among groups. Acinonyx jubatus, for instance, showed a shorter and shallower temporal fossa than other big cats, and their bite functionality is marked by an increased contribution of the masseteric system. A morphofunctional dichotomy between Neotropical and Eurasian/African small cats was detected, and is associated with the major transversal axes of the skulls. According to the contrast analyses, the skull size is correlated with the bite force and prey size, but it is uncorrelated with the variations on jaw mechanics (from temporalis or masseter muscle optimizations). Also, there was no correlation between functional differences on jaw muscles and the ratio of prey weight to cat weight. The efficiency of the jaw apparatus among cats is quite consistent; therefore, the different evolutionary trends of jaw mechanics seem to be caused by the casuistic fixation of phenotypical variations, rather than by specific adaptative selections. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 161 , 414–462.  相似文献

Abstract: Compared with crocodylomorph body fossils, the record of fossil crocodiloid eggs is scarce and poorly understood, a gap partially attributed to their typically thin eggshell, which is not conducive to preservation. A remarkable new association of well‐preserved eggs and eggshells from the Adamantina Formation (Bauru Group, Upper Cretaceous) is described and compared to other known materials, while the significance of their unique oological features is discussed. These eggs constitute a new ootaxon, Bauruoolithus fragilis oogen. et oosp. nov., diagnosed by the following characteristics: elongate and elliptical egg with blunt ends; length‐to‐diameter ratio of 1:0.55; outer surface slightly undulating; shell thickness ranging from 0.15 to 0.25 mm; pore openings elliptical or teardrop‐shaped, ranging from 30 to 80 μm in diameter; and shell units wider than higher, with the interstices forming an obtuse triangle. Specimens of Bauruoolithus also show only slight signs of extrinsic degradation that, coupled with the evidence that some of them constitute hatched eggs, suggests that the egg‐laying taxon had a different pattern of egg incubation, in which the hatchling could break through the rather thin eggshell relatively easily and that the extrinsic degradation of the eggshell was not necessary. This contrasts with the pattern of incubation for all other known crocodylomorphs and crocodiloid eggs, where extrinsic degradation is a key component of the hatching process.  相似文献

The relationship of DNA synthesis and cellular turnover to biochemical differentiation during metamorphosis of R. pipiens liver was investigated. Average DNA/cell was constant at 11.6 pg/ nucleus through stage XXV; but increased during juvenile growth; during metamorphosis stages, changes in total DNA content must correspond to changes in cell number. Rates of DNA synthesis were estimated by rates of 3H-thymidine incorporated into the acid-precipitable fractions, corrected for both precursor uptake into the acid-soluble pool, and for endogenous thymine pool size. DNA content increased steadily from premetamorphosis until late prometamorphosis; at preclimax stages XVIII and XX there were two successive decreases in DNA content of approximately 30%. Fluctuations in synthesis rates preceded corresponding fluctuations in content; DNA synthesis was maximal at stages XVI and XVIII, decreased nearly ten-fold at metamorphic climax, and then gradually rose again during late climax stages. The size of the endogenous thymine pool increased transitorily during spontaneous metamorphosis corresponding to a stage of maximal DNA synthesis. These results indicate that both DNA synthesis and cellular turnover play a significant role in determining net DNA synthesis rates and content during metamorphosis. Metamorphosis of the tadpole liver appears to be associated with both proliferation and cellular death, perhaps a replacement of “larval” by “adult” cells. Metamorphosis of the liver cannot be occuring in a “fixed population of cells” as is commonly assumed. An interpretation of the population dynamics of the metamorphic liver is presented.  相似文献

Several genera of frogs from Madagascar, classified in the family Mantellidae, subfamily Mantellinae, possess structures commonly called 'femoral glands' on the ventral side of their shanks. The question arises as to the origin and phylogenetic significance of these glands. A molecular phylogeny based on 3601 nucleotide DNA sequences of three mitochondrial and two nuclear genes of 30 mantellid species provided strong support for monophyly of the included mantellines, all characterized by enlarged femoral gland clusters, as well as for those with gland clusters of coordinated central arrangement of secretion ducts. However, the phylogeny also strongly supported the hypothesis of convergent evolution of structurally similar glands in unrelated frogs ( Indirana , Petropedetes ), and several trends of convergent evolution of gland structure within mantellines. We studied the light microscopic structure of the femoral glands in a representative array of 18 mantellid species. Males of all species of the subfamily Mantellinae were characterized by clusters of distinct single glands. Each was structurally similar to an enlarged granular gland and secreted independently, probably through a single duct. By contrast, the largely semi-aquatic frogs in the genus Mantidactylus had a specialized cluster of glands, in which the secretion ducts led into a macroscopically recognizable central depression. In Boophis opisthodon , a mantellid species of the subfamily Boophinae without externally recognizable femoral glands, we observed a large number of enlarged granular glands of various sizes in the ventral skin of the shank. The seed coat develops primarily from maternal tissues and comprises multiple cell layers at maturity, providing a metabolically dynamic interface between the developing embryo and the environment during embryogenesis, dormancy and germination of seeds. Seed coat development involves dramatic cellular changes, and the aim of this research was to investigate the role of programmed cell death (PCD) events during the development of seed coats of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]. We demonstrate that cells of the developing cowpea seed coats undergo a programme of autolytic cell death, detected as cellular morphological changes in nuclei, mitochondria, chloroplasts and vacuoles, DNA fragmentation and oligonucleosome accumulation in the cytoplasm, and loss of membrane viability. We show for the first time that classes 6 and 8 caspase‐like enzymes are active during seed coat development, and that these activities may be compartmentalized by translocation between vacuoles and cytoplasm during PCD events.  相似文献

According to the literature, the seeds of Chamaecrista lack pleurograms and have pitted testas aligned in vertical lines. Preliminary observations have revealed that these small structures consist of superficial alterations of the testa that are coloured differently to the rest of the seed coat and stand out as pits. However, no anatomical inspection has yet determined the precise composition of these pits. The present work examined the morphology, surface micromorphology, anatomy, and histochemistry of the seed coat of mature seeds of C. desvauxii var. latistipula , C. flexuosa , and C. nictitans var. patellaria in order to elucidate the structural nature of the seed coat pits. For this, seed coats were studied using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Structural modifications were examined in the seed coats of the studied species, and variations were noted in the mucilaginous layer, in the thickness of the palisade layer, and in the presence of larger hypodermic cells. Based on the anatomical features observed, and comparing these with published data on pleurograms in the Caesalpinioideae, it was determined that the structures referred to previously as tegumental pits on Chamaecrista seeds are actually small and numerous pleurograms, reported here for the first time.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 487–492.  相似文献

估计死亡和案发之间的最短时间是法医昆虫学的重要目标之一。在估计死亡时间时,研究吹蝇扩散至关重要。如果低估了最早扩散的幼虫距离和深度就可能低估死亡的时间。因此,掌握影响吹蝇幼虫扩散的有关因素,包括竞争、同类相食、在食源上的聚集密度、光周期、温湿度等以及潜入习性,进而推测吹蝇幼虫在尸体附近或远离尸体化蛹等都会影响估计死亡时间的准确性。本研究分析了从2006年夏季至2007年冬季在巴西南部自然状态下吹蝇食后的扩散。除趋光性外,扩散距离在季节上的不同(夏季3·1 m对应冬季的1·2 m)是由于环境条件起了重要作用。在用屠宰动物模拟实验时显示,吹蝇幼虫在低温低湿环境下扩散的时间滞后,扩散的距离也缩短。本研究表明温度(也许包括湿度)影响吹蝇幼虫的扩散,环境条件也决定吹蝇何时开始扩散。  相似文献
