The urban heat island effect, classically associated with high impervious surface area (ISA), low vegetation fractional cover (Fr), and high land surface temperature (LST), has been linked to changing patterns of vegetation phenology, especially spring growth. In this study, a collaboration with the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program, we investigated the effect of the urban environment on the timing of leaf budburst of native deciduous trees in seven cities: Asia (Tokyo, Japan; Bangkok and Korat, Thailand), Europe (Jyväskylä, Finland; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan), Africa (Dakar, Senegal), and North America (Fairbanks, Alaska). The cities differed not only in population size but also in climate and vegetation type. Using Landsat satellite imagery from each city, we calculated LST, Fr, and ISA, and classified sites within each study area as rural or urban. The timing of leaf flushing, measured by students using GLOBE budburst protocols, was statistically different within all cities, with absolute differences ranging from 1 to 23 days. We assessed the classic urban phenology paradigm, which proposes higher LST, lower Fr, and earlier budburst in urban areas of temperate cities. Of the four temperate cities, Tokyo followed the classic paradigm, but no other city demonstrated consistent support. Urban budburst was advanced in three of the four temperate cities, but in only one of the three tropical cities. Results suggest that while vegetation phenology is consistently different between urban and rural areas, a uniform paradigm based on the explanatory variables in this study did not emerge. Although not testable here, it is likely that alterations to chilling requirements in temperate climates and humidity in tropical climates may also influence observed budburst differences.  相似文献

To determine at what time in development the genetic capacityto make an antibody of a given specificity is present, we havelooked for antigen binding cells (ABC) to a panel of five randomlyselected and independently bound antigens during fetal lifein the mouse, rabbit, chicken, and sheep. ABC are present foreach of the five antigens in approximately equal frequenciesat the very beginning of immune development, preceding the appearanceof theta antigen and the ability to make a humoral antibodyresponse. ABC in the thymus decline from an initially high level(1%) to adult levels during fetal life. The ABC are all positivefor surface immunoglobulin, and antigen binding can be inhibitedwith rabbit anti-mouse mu chain serum. We conclude that mostreceptor specificities can be made without a need for somaticdiversification.  相似文献

Hatching failure within clutches of eggs occurs to varying degrees in many avian species. We investigated predictors of hatching failure in a population of Florida Scrub‐Jays, for which hatching success has been monitored for 15 years. We assessed whether hatching failure was related to parental traits (e.g. age, experience as a pair or body condition), lay date, social structure (e.g. number of helpers), environmental conditions, or some combination of these. We used linear mixed models and Akaike’s information criterion to determine the models that best explain observed patterns of hatching failure. The best model showed that increased hatching failure was associated with below‐average rainfall during the breeding season, and was more common for newly established breeding pairs than for pairs that had previously produced one or more clutches together. Other contributing models suggested that hatching failure was greatest for the youngest and oldest female breeders. Some aspects of our findings are consistent with conclusions drawn from other species. However, as a whole, our analyses suggest that hatching failure in the Florida Scrub‐Jay is influenced by a complex set of environmental and parental factors.  相似文献

Abstract. The biology of nineteen taxa of African Stomoxyinae was studied during experiments with odour-baited Vavoua traps in Nairobi National Park, Kenya. Both male and female Stomoxys were captured in similar numbers with C02 released at 2 1/min or octenol released at 2 mg/h. Some species of Haematobosca reacted synergistically to a combination of these two attractants, producing large increases in catch. Stygeromyia and Rhinomusca responded only to C02, and Prostomoxys did not respond to either bait. Many different activity patterns were documented in these genera, but most activity was concentrated just prior to sunset. For example, at peak densities nearly 1500 Stomoxyinae representing fourteen taxa were caught in a single trap between 18.00 and 19.00 hours. The Stomoxyinae community was exceptionally diverse when compared with other biting fly communities. Using data from traps set with different odour baits in the park forest, Shannon-Wiener diversity indices (H') varied from 2.5 to 2.8, and evenness (J') varied between 0.61 and 0.68. The Stomoxys population was extremely female-biased at the start of the rainy season, with species such as S.inornatus and S.boueti consisting of nearly 100% females. Sex ratios equalized when the first rainy-season generation emerged. Population doubling times estimated from trap indices were approximately 12–16 days in two habitats (forest and riverine woodland).  相似文献

Lemongrasses (Cymbopogonspp., Poaceae) are a group of commerciallyimportant C4tropical grasses. Their leaves contain up to 1.5%(d.wt) essential oils with a typical lemon-like aroma, consistingmainly of citral (a mixture of the isomeric acyclic monoterpenealdehydes geranial and neral). To specifically locate the sitesof citral accumulation in lemongrass we employed Schiff's reagent, which reacts with aldehydes and gives a purple-red colorationwith citral. Using this technique, single oil-accumulating cellswere detected in the adaxial side of leaf mesophyll, commonlyadjacent to non-photosynthetic tissue, and between vascularbundles. Cell walls of these oil cells are lignified. Our resultssuggest that citral accumulation takes place in individual oilcells within the leaf tissues.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Lemongrass;Cymbopogon citratus; Poaceae; oil cells; histochemistry; citral; aldehydes; Schiff's-reagent.  相似文献
