Effect of Abscisic Acid at Different Levels of Soil Water Potential on the Transpiration of Zea mays

The effect of different levels of both exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) and soil water potential on transpiration from intact maize leaves was studied in growth chamber experiments. The transpiration rate showed a more consistent decrease with decreasing soil water potential than with increasing concentration of applied ABA. The effect of exogenous ABA on the transpiration rate was markedly lower at low than at high levels of soil water potential.     

Taxonomic changes regarding three species of Zingiber (Zingiberaceae) from Thailand

Zingiber teres S. Q. Tong & Y. M. Xia and Z. xishuangbannaense S. Q. Tong are reduced to be synonyms of Z. smilesianum Craib and Z. thorelii Gagnep.,respectively. Z. cochinchinense Gagnep. is changed to be a subspecies of Z. zerumbet (L.) Sm.     

Gas Flow Measurement in Fermentations: An Inexpensive System with Analogue Output for Recording

During the fermentation of North Sea Gas to single cell protein in a gas-recycle system (Spivey 1973) there was a need to measure continuously low gas flow rates and to obtain a recorder signal proportional to the instantaneous flow rate. Commercial equipment, such as differential pressure transmitters linked to a pneumatic recorder, was expensive and not readily modified for the low flow rates of laboratory fermentations.     

Effects of stream flooding on the distribution and diversity of groundwater‐dependent vegetation in riparian areas

1. Effects of the frequency and duration of flooding on the structural and functional characteristics of riparian vegetation were studied at four sites (n = 80, 50 × 50 cm, plots) along medium‐sized naturally meandering lowland streams. Special focus was on rich fens, which – due to their high species richness – are of high priority in nature conservation. 2. Reed beds, rich fens and meadows were all regularly flooded during the 20‐year study period, with a higher frequency in reed bed areas than in rich fen and meadow areas. In rich fens, species richness was higher in low frequency flooded areas (≤3 year^?1) than in areas with a high frequency of flooding (>3 year^?1) or no flooding, whereas species richness in reed beds and meadows was unaffected by flood frequency. 3. The percentage of stress‐tolerant species was higher in low intensity flooded rich fen areas than in high intensity and non‐flooded areas, indicating that the higher species richness in low frequency flooded rich fens was caused by competitive release. We found no indication that increased productivity was associated with high flooding frequencies. 4. We conclude that the restoration of morphological features in stream channels to increase the flooding regime can be beneficial for protected vegetation within riparian areas, but also that groundwater discharge thresholds and critical levels for protected vegetation should be identified and considered when introducing stream ecosystem restoration plans.

Determination of 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid methyl ester in Lathyrus, Vicia and Pisum by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry

4-Chloroindole-3-acetic acid methyl ester was identified unequivocally in Lathyrus latifolius L., Vicia faba L. and Pisum sativum L. by thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The gas chromatographic system was able to separate underivatized chloroindole-3-acetic acid methyl ester isomers. The quantitative determination of 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid methyl ester in immature seeds of these three species was performed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry using deuterium labelled 4-chloro-indole-3-acetic acid methyl ester as an internal standard. P. sativum contained approximately 25 mg kg^-1, V. faba 1–2 mg kg^-1 and L. latifolius 2 mg kg^-1 dry weight.     

Potyviral resistance derived from cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris carrying bc-3 is associated with the homozygotic presence of a mutated eIF4E allele

Eukaryotic translation initiation factors (eIFs) play a central role in potyviral infection. Accordingly, mutations in the gene encoding eIF4E have been identified as a source of recessive resistance in several plant species. In common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris , four recessive genes, bc-1 , bc-2 , bc-3 and bc-u , have been proposed to control resistance to the potyviruses Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus . In order to identify molecular entities for these genes, we cloned and sequenced P. vulgaris homologues of genes encoding the eIF proteins eIF4E, eIF(iso)4E and nCBP. Bean genotypes reported to carry bc-3 resistance were found specifically to carry non-silent mutations at codons 53, 65, 76 and 111 in eIF4E . This set of mutations closely resembled a pattern of eIF4E mutations determining potyvirus resistance in other plant species. The segregation of BCMV resistance and eIF4E genotype was subsequently analysed in an F₂ population derived from the P. vulgaris all-susceptible genotype and a genotype carrying bc-3 . F₂ plants homozygous for the eIF4E mutant allele were found to display at least the same level of resistance to BCMV as the parental resistant genotype. At 6 weeks after inoculation, all F₂ plants found to be BCMV negative by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were found to be homozygous for the mutant eIF4E allele. In F₃ plants homozygous for the mutated allele, virus resistance was subsequently found to be stably maintained. In conclusion, allelic eIF4E appears to be associated with a major component of potyvirus resistance present in bc-3 genotypes of bean.     

Relationships between structure and function in streams contrasting in temperature

1. We studied 10 first-order Icelandic streams differing in geothermal influence in separate catchments. Summer temperature (August–September) ranged between 6 and 23 °C.
2. Macroinvertebrate evenness and species overlap decreased significantly with temperature whereas taxon richness showed no response. In total, 35 macroinvertebrate species were found with Chironomidae the dominant taxonomic group. Macroinvertebrate density increased significantly with temperature. Dominant species in the warm streams were Lymnaea peregra and Simulium vittatum . Algal biomass, macrophyte cover and richness were unrelated to temperature. Densities of trout ( Salmo trutta ), the only fish species present, reflected habitat conditions and to a lesser degree temperature.
3. Density of filter-feeders increased significantly with temperature whereas scraper density, the other dominant functional feeding group, was unrelated to temperature. Stable isotope analysis revealed a positive relationship between δ¹⁵N and temperature across several trophic levels. No pattern was found with regard to δ¹³C and temperature.
4. Leaf litter decomposition in both fine and coarse mesh leaf bags were significantly correlated to temperature. In coarse mesh leaf packs breakdown rates were almost doubled compared with fine mesh, ranging between 0.5 and 1.3 g DW 28 days⁻¹. Nutrient diffusion substrates showed that the streams were primarily nitrogen limited across the temperature gradient while a significant additional effect of phosphorous was found with increasing temperature.
5. Structural and functional attributes gave complementary information which all indicated a change with temperature similar to what is found in moderately polluted streams. Our results therefore suggest that lotic ecosystems could be degraded by global warming.
