Short-term movements of chalk-stream invertebrates 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY 1. Trays of gravel were implanted for 24 h periods in several chalk streams. The trays were variously modified to monitor colonization from different sources, particularly drift (D), other downstream movements (DSM), upstream movements (USM), and all sources combined (ALL).
2. The abundance of invertebrates in the streams was high (maximum of 717 per 0.04 m2 ) and colonization of the trays was extensive, especially by Gammarus pulex , the predominant species in all but one of the streams (maximum number of individuals of G. pulex per tray: for D, 473; for DSM, 462; tor USM, 286; and tor ALL, 639). In some cases benthic densities were achieved in the trays in the 24 h exposure period, and in most cases any one source of colonization could provide benthic densities in a few days.
3. Patterns of movement differed between species, between size classes of G. pulex , and between sites for particular species. No one source of colonization could be regarded as generally predominant although downstream movements in total (D + DSM) usually far exceeded USM. DSM was usually an important source of colonization.
4. The extent and direction of movement appeared to be determined by local factors and were explained in terms of the high densities of invertebrates and the current and substratum characteristics of each site.

ABSTRACT.
- 1 A study was made of the insect species present on twenty-eight colonies of H.chamaecistus Mill, in 1978 ranging in size (cover) from 0.4 m2 to about 6500 m2 and separated from nearest large neighbours by distances up to 6.5 km. Twenty-three insect species were collected of which nine or ten were more or less monophagous.
- 2 There was a clear relationship between species richness and size of host colony. Sites with less than 30 m2 of rock-rose, about 67% of those in the study area, were likely to have less than half of the monophagous species. Distance to neighbouring colonies did not contribute significantly to species richness.
- 3 The consistency of results from year to year was examined at five sites re-sampled in 1979. The 1978 data were also used to compare‘expected’and observed faunas at five new sites sampled in 1979 based upon the species-area relationship and the relative frequency of species at known sites.
- 4 Insect dispersal was examined using a suction trap placed near the largest rock-rose site. Colonization of new sites was studied by experimental outplanting of pot-grown plants.
- 5 These direct observations, and the monitoring of fourteen sites for 5 years, suggested that colonization and interchange of faunas were rare events. The experimental introduction of one to five species at four sites showed in several cases that the sites were suitable for the species, and that introduction could significantly enhance a site's complement.

The effectiveness of resistance to subterranean clover mottle sobemovirus (SCMoV) previously identified in different genotypes of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) inoculated with infective sap in the glasshouse, was tested in two field experiments which used the grazing animal as virus vector. Replicated plots each consisting of paired test rows of 20 different genotypes were used. Clover plants infected with SCMoV were transplanted in between the paired test rows and these acted as sources of the virus for spread by grazing sheep. Although used in different years at different sites with different virus isolates, the field exposure methodology employed produced consistent results. The genotypes each behaved similarly in both experiments as regards the relative extents of SCMoV infection that developed, levels ranging from 0–98%. The previously identified resistance in six ‘highly resistant’ and three ‘partially resistant’ cultivars was effective under field conditions. However, the ‘partial resistance’ in three others was overcome, cvs Green Range and Mt Barker developing levels of infection approaching those in ‘susceptible’ cultivars, while an intermediate infection level developed in cv. Karridale. The three cultivars in which partial resistance was not effective all belonged to ssp. subterraneum. In subterranean clover breeding programmes, field screening using the grazing animal as a vector is advisable to determine whether SCMoV resistance found by sap inoculation is still effective under field conditions. 相似文献

Madeira is home to two species of speckled wood butterfly. Pararge xiphia is endemic and is common at mid to high altitudes, within and around the edges of the indigenous laurel forest. In 1976 P. aegeria colonized the island and anecdotal reports suggest that it may have been responsible for the loss of P. xiphia from some of its former haunts. The aims of this paper were (1) to provide comprehensive data on the distribution, habitat preferences and recent changes of range of the two species and (2) to examine territorial behaviour to see if inter-specific competition is taking place. Census results show that there are basic differences between the species in altitudinal range and habitat, but they are found together at high densities at habitat boundaries. Repetition of some of the census routes after a 4-year gap suggests that P. aegeria is expanding its range into the areas dominated by P. xiphia. Behavioural data demonstrate that the males may be competing by causing each other to expend more energy in defence of territories. Although competition may be present, it is not yet possible to establish which species is more affected and how competition may have contributed to the recent changes in the species' ranges. 相似文献

A species of the flea beetle (Epitrix sp.) transmitted Andean potato latent virus (APLV) from Datura stramonium to D. stramonium, Nicandra physalodes and potato, and from N. physalodes to N. physalodes and D. stramonium. Although the acquisition and inoculation feeding times used were varied, this transmission always occurred at low efficiency. By contrast, APLV was very readily transmitted in tests in which infected plants of D. stramonium, N. physalodes, Nicotiana bigelovii and potato were brushed against healthy plants of one or more of these species. SUMMARY. The difference between the results of viable and total counting procedures for bacteria are exemplified by vertical profiles from a deep and a shallow lake and from seasonal changes in the epilimnion and hypolimnion of a shallow eutrophic lake. The viable count was, on average, 0.25% of the total count, the greatest difference being noted in the anoxic hypolimnion, probably due to the inadequacy of the viable counting procedure for the isolation of bacteria from such samples. There was a general trend for the more nutrient-rich waters to support larger bacterial populations but such observations did not provide any further information on the factors responsible for the population changes observed. Seasonal fluctuations in the counts are studied and the qualitative and quantitative changes resulting from artificial enclosure of water are discussed. Not all the temporal changes could be explained and short-term changes resulting from nutrient additions to the experimental enclosures were not always reproducible. Horizontal variability was examined, found to be significant and could play an important role where water movement and turbulence is considerable. Results from six sites sampled between 1969 and 1974, representing total and viable bacterial population estimates and a total of eighteen independent or regressor variables were then subjected to principal components analysis. Results taken from the whole water column showed the overwhelming effect of the process of stratification on the bacterial population accounting for 30%-60% of its variability. Secondary components representing algal productivity could account for 10% to 20% of the variability. Many of the chosen regressor variables were acting as measures of the same phenomenon without providing significant information on what affected the bacterial population. To overcome this problem results from the hypolimnion and epilimnion were analysed separately. The analysis demonstrated the importance of seasonal changes in nutrient concentrations in the epilimnion and the development of anoxic conditions in the hypolimnion. Algal biomass, phosphate concentration and the interaction of pH and ammonia appeared to be important. It was concluded that most of the variability in the bacterial population estimates could have been explained by five of the regressor variables and that the factors most likely to provide more information would include some measure of predation and lake retention time. 相似文献

In a study of female House Sparrows Passer domesticus , it was established that almost all of the lean dry material lost from the flight muscles during the period of egg formation and laying was protein. The two large fractions of muscle protein, the sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar fractions, were measured biochemically. Protein in the myofibrillar fraction, which formed the greater part of the total protein, decreased during the study period. There was no evidence to support the proposal that sarcoplasm in muscle acts as the main reserve of proteins. 相似文献
