The concentration of serum fibrinogen-fibrin-related antigen (F.R.-antigen) was measured in a group of 142 patients with various renal disorders, in 38 of whom urine F.R.-antigen was also estimated. Raised serum F.R.-antigen levels were present in 48% of the patients, with no particular preponderance in any diagnostic category apart from acute reversible intrinsic renal failure in which high levels were invariably present. Significantly-raised serum levels were also present in the patients with microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia and in those with the more severe degrees of renal impairment. Urine F.R.-antigen was increased in 34 of the 38 patients. The amount of F.R.-antigen in the urine correlated with the degree of proteinuria but not with the serum F.R.-antigen levels. The evidence relating to intravascular coagulation in renal disease is reviewed, and it is suggested that there is a high incidence of localized fibrinogen or fibrin degradation in the kidney, which is related more to factors such as the presence of uraemia and microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia rather than to the diagnostic category. 相似文献

Surveys for biological control agents of the invasive weed Schinus terebinthifolius (Anacardiaceae) discovered two Omolabus weevils (Coleoptera: Attelabidae) feeding on the plant in its native range. Molecular and morphological analysis indicated that one of these species consistently fed on the target weed and the other species fed more broadly. Aspects of the biology and host range of the more specific species, Omolabus piceus (Germar) were examined to determine its suitability as a biological control agent of S. terebinthifolius in the USA. Adults feed on newly formed leaves, and eggs, larvae and pupae develop in curled fragments of leaves, called nidi. Larvae consumed an average of 11.3 (±0.4) mg throughout their development which required 15.1 (±0.2) days. An average of 31.6 (±2.7) eggs were laid per female during their 23.8 (±2.2) day lifetime, after a 3.4 (±1.0) day preoviposition period. In no-choice tests, O. piceus adults fed and oviposited on all tested native North American, Caribbean and agricultural Anacardiaceae species except for M. indica. The field host-range of O. piceus, as determined by samples of host use in the native range, included three Schinus, two Lithrea and one Anacardium species. Therefore, we do not recommend O. piceus for biological control of S. terebinthifolius in the USA. Oxygen therapy at atmospheric and increased pressure was used in the treatment of experimental hemorrhagic shock. Arterial gases, pH, lactate and pyruvate were determined and compared. Survival was carefully followed and complete pathological evaluation was carried out. The results showed no difference between control animals and those in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy group. It was concluded that hyperbaric oxygen therapy post facto did not influence the metabolic or survival data in this experiment. 相似文献

Apoptosis of oligodendrocytes (ODCs), the myelin-producing glial cells in the CNS, plays a central role in demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis. To investigate the mechanism behind ODC apoptosis in EAE, we made use of conditional knockout mice lacking the adaptor protein FADD specifically in ODCs (FADD(ODC-KO)). FADD mediates apoptosis by coupling death receptors with downstream caspase activation. In line with this, ODCs from FADD(ODC-KO) mice were completely resistant to death receptor-induced apoptosis in vitro. In the EAE model, FADD(ODC-KO) mice followed an ameliorated clinical disease course in comparison with control littermates. Lymphocyte and macrophage infiltration into the spinal cord parenchyma was significantly reduced, as was the extent of demyelination and proinflammatory gene expression. Collectively, our data show that FADD is critical for ODC apoptosis and the development of autoimmune demyelinating disease. 相似文献
