Factors influencing the susceptibility of Candida albicans to the polyenoic antibiotics nystatin and amphotericin B.

Factors influencing the interaction between Candida albicans and the polyenoic antibiotics nystatin and amphotericin B have been investigated using a K+-specific electrode to measure polyene-mediated efflux of cellular K+. In batch cultures, sensitivity was a function of culture age. Using continuous (chemostat) cultures, the influence of growth-limiting substrate, specific growth rate, growth temperature and growth pH were examined. Carbon-limited cultures showed the highest sensitivity of those substrates tested, and susceptibility increased with growth rate. Within the range 22 to 42 degrees C, growth at lower temperatures resulted in increased sensitivity, whilst a similar trend was observed when the growth pH of cultures was reduced. Further, under the conditions tested, there were considerable variations in free intracellular K+ concentrations.     

Lymphosarcoma with lymphoblastic leukemia in a New Zealand white rabbit.

An 8 to 10-week-old female New Zealand white rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, which exhibited clinical signs of anorexia, depression, and torticollis was found to have lymphosarcoma with lymphoblastic leukemia. The multiple visceral involvement with neoplastic lymphoid cells observed in this animal was similar to previously reprted cases of lymphosarcoma in the rabbit. An unusual finding was the occurrence of lymphoblastic leukemia since lymphosarcoma in the rabbit has previously been reported as aleukemic.     

Male gametophyte in maize: II. Pollen vigor in inbred plants

Summary The competitive ability of pollen from inbred plants in mixed pollinations in this study is not merely maintained but enhanced through successive generations of selfing. The data presented suggest two conclusions: 1) the possible existence of pollen-stylar interactions during successive selfings, which select for certain pollen genotypes, those best suited for rapid growth through self styles; and 2) the presence of sporophytic vigor in the heterotic F₁ sporophyte, or its absence in the depressed F₇ sporophyte, is not necessarily demonstrated in the gametophytic generation, perhaps because it can be overwhelmed by other factors, e.g. gametophytic response to selection.     

Studies of cyclic AMP action using mutant tissue culture cells.

S49 mouse lymphoma cell mutants, each with a specific defect in its ability to generate or respond to cyclic AMP, have been isolated. Analysis of the properties of these cells has begun to provide information on complex and significant biologic problems related to the cyclic AMP system.     

Mitogenic activity of Neisseria gonorrhoeae surface antigens in mouse splenic lymphocyte culture.

The mitogenic effects of Neisseria gonorrhoeae endotoxin, fractionated envelope componenents, and intact cells were examined on unsensitized mouse splenic lymphocytes in vitro. The stimulatory effect of these substances was measured by increased [3H]thymidine incorporation in spleen cell cultures. Intact cells, purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and cell envelope preparations were highly stimulatory and the stimulation index was dose dependent. Fractionated components of the envelope demonstrated variable stimulation when tested at identical LPS concentrations, reflecting the mitogenic activity of the protein moieties. The stimulatory dose responses for purified N. gonorrhoeae and Escherichia coli LPS were compared and mitogenicity was higher with gonococcal LPS at all concentrations tested. Alkaline detoxification or succinylation of N. gonorrhoeae LPS results in loss of ability to induce blast transformation. The mitogenicity of cell-surface components of N. gonorrhoeae is discussed in terms of LPS and protein content.     

Low serum testosterone concentrations in patients with carcinoma of the pancreas

The detection of high activities of two sex-steroid biosynthetic enzymes—aromatase and 5-alpha-reductase—in pancreatic carcinoma tissue suggested the possibility that these enzymes may influence the circulating concentrations of sex-steroid hormones. Mean serum testosterone concentrations in 22 men and women with exocrine carcinoma of the pancreas were significantly lower than those in 20 healthy controls and 27 patients with other known malignancies, who were of similar age and sex composition. Low serum testosterone concentrations may be due to uptake by and metabolism within the tumour; alternatively, patients with low androgen concentrations may be at greater risk of developing pancreatic carcinoma.
