Crown architecture and growth rate of trunk height, trunk diameterand lateral branches of understorey trees (5–10m tall)were compared between two co-dominating conifers,Abies sachalinensisandPiceaglehnii, in relation to the index of local crowding intensity,W,represented as a function of density, distance and basal areaof taller neighbours. For the two conifers, the growth of trunkheight and diameter was decreased and crowns became flat withincreasingW, keeping crown projection area. Self-pruning oflower branches was more intense inAbiesthan inPiceain crowdedconditions, while both conifers showed similar crown forms inless crowded conditions. These results suggest that the growthin lateral branches exceeded that in height in crowded conditions,especially inAbies. Tree age of both conifers increased withincreasingW, resulting from the low growth rate in crowded conditions.The age of the longest and lowest branch ofPicea, up to 150years, was positively correlated with the tree age ranging from70 to 250 years, whereas that ofAbieswas constant at around30 years irrespective of tree age varying from 40 to 140 years.This result agrees with the observation that agedAbieshad moreflat-shaped crowns than in agedPiceain crowded conditions. Theseresults suggest that each conifer adapted to crowding in differentways: high elongation of branches with high turnover rate forAbiesandviceversaforPicea. DNA polymorphisms of different strains of Blastocystis isolated from humans, a chicken, and a reptile were examined by an arbitrary primer PCR method. Two strains of Blastocystis hominis isolated from humans in the USA and Japan yielded nearly identical PCR products. However, one strain of B. hominis (isolated from a human in Singapore) yielded quite different PCR products. Blastocystis sp. isolated from a chicken yielded PCR products similar to those of the former two strains, while Blastocystis lapemi, isolated from a reptile, shared no bands with any of the other isolates. These results indicate the possibility that our isolate from the chicken is a zoonotic strain, and that there is intraspecific variation of Blastocystis hominis.  相似文献

Roots of Pisum sativum L. and Zea mays L. were exposed to different moisture gradients established by placing both wet cheesecloth (hydrostimulant) and saturated aqueous solutions of various salts in a closed chamber. Atmospheric conditions with different relative humidity (RH) in a range between 98 and 86% RH were obtained at root level, 2 to 3mm from the water-saturated hydrostimulant. Roots of Silver Queen corn placed vertically with the tips down curved sideways toward the hydrostimulant in response to approximately 94% RH but did not respond positively to RH higher than approximately 95%. The positive hydrotropic response increased linearly as RH was lowered from 95 to 90%. A maximum response was observed at RH between 90 and 86%. However, RH required for the induction of hydrotropism as well as the responsiveness differed among plant species used; gravitropically sensitive roots appeared to require a somewhat greater moisture gradient for the induction of hydrotropism. Decapped roots of corn failed to curve hydrotropically, suggesting the root cap as a major site of hydrosensing.  相似文献

In the mature testes of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata , some groups of cells, distributed sparsely in the interspace between the peripheral germ cell layer and the hilar duct system, show evident histochemical response for Δ5-3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD). In the testis of newly delivered guppies, somatic cells are present in the testicular hilus as a compact mass without revealing any structural differentiation. In the testis of juvenile fish of the 8mm stage about 7 days after birth, interstitial cells resembling histologically those of adult testes become differentiated from the somatic cell mass and, though only in some specimens, coincidentally begin to display weak but obvious histochemical response for 3β-HSD. Thereafter the occurrence of enzyme activity becomes increasingly regular in the developing testes, and attains the adult pattern of distribution in testes of all specimens after the 11 13mm stage or 17 ∽ 20 days of age.
The appearance and enhancement of 3β-HSD activity in the testis is concurrent with the differentiation and development of the testicular duct system. Treatments of newly delivered fish with methyltestosterone (30 ∽ 50 μg/g diet) distinctly stimulate the development of the duct system, which suggests a possible role of androgen secretion occurring in the early phase of the testicular development in the control of testicular organogenesis in the guppy.  相似文献

A cell wall fraction (pectic substances) of oat coleoptile segmentsfed with 14C-glucose contained more radioactivity under theeffect of auxin than did the control. When labeled segmentswere grown for 6 hr in auxin or glucanase solution the labelin the hemicellulose fraction decreased as growth increased.ß-1,3-Glucanase prepared from the culture of a fungus,Sclerotinia libertiana, induces elongation of segments of thepea stem and the oat coleoptile. Traces of cellulase and pectinmethylesterase contaminating the enzyme preparation are notresponsible for the stimulatory effect. Cellulase seemed tobe rather inhibitory and pectin methylesterase showed only aslight effect on coleoptile elongation. Swine genomic DNA segments containing repetitive sequences were isolated from a porcine genomic library using genomic DNA as a probe. Three fragments containing the repetitive sequences from two of the primary phage clones were subcloned for sequence analysis, which revealed six new PRE-1 repetitive families other than those reported earlier by Singer et al. (Nucleic Acids Research 15, 2780, 1987). The frequency of the repetitive sequences in the swine genome was estimated at 2 x 10(6) per diploid genome. Sequence analysis revealed similarities between these repetitive sequences and that of arginine-tRNA gene.  相似文献

Trehalase activities were found in several tissues of the adult American cockroach, Periplaneta americana. Among these, male accessory glands, fat body, thoracic muscle, hepatic cecum, blood and mid-gut contained high trehalase activity; activity in the male accessory gland was especially high. The enzymic properties of soluble trehalases were investigated and the enzymes from the male accessory gland were highly purified.

The properties of these enzymes were electrophoretically and kinetically distinct from each other. The presence of enzymes with somewhat different properties in different tissues suggests that trehalose utilization and trehalase activity may be regulated by way of a tissue-specific mechanism. Reynoutria japonica is a common perennial pioneer species onJapanese volcanoes. In a volcanic desert (1500m above sea level)on Mount Fuji (3776m), central Japan, this species forms circularstands (patches). As a patch develops, shoot density decreasesin its centre (‘central die-back’). The centraldie-back has been considered a key process in the early stagesof primary succession, though its mechanism has been unknown. The pattern of patch development, population dynamics of aerialshoots, and growth patterns of below-ground organs were analysedin order to investigate the mechanism of die-back, and the followingtraits are clarified: (1) central die-back areas occur in mostsmall patches (approx. 1m2) without later successional species;(2) shoot characteristics are dependent both on their positionwithin a patch and on patch size; (3) despite the large differencesin shoot density, neither time course of shoot growth nor theirmortality differs between the centre and periphery of patches;and (4) rhizomes ofR. japonicagrow outwards with regular sympodialbranching. From these results, it is concluded that neither interspecificnor intraspecific competition is likely to be a primary causeof the die-back phenomenon, but that central die-back is broughtabout intrinsically by the growth pattern of the rhizome systems.We also discuss the importance of the central die-back in facilitatingestablishment of later successional species in the early stagesof primary succession.
