The effects of different applied NO3 concentrations onextension growth and final length and area of leaves 14of five cereals and six pasture grasses of temperate originwere examined. Increased applied NO3 in the range 0.150mol m3; caused decreased duration of growth but increasedgrowth rate and final length of leaves 24 of the cerealsAvena saliva, Hordeum vulgare, Secale cereale x Triticosecaleand Triticum aestivum. For all cereals, increased NO3resulted in increased area of leaves 1-4. Pasture grasses weresupplied either 0.5 or 50 mol m3; NO3. Increasedapplied NO3 (0.550 mol m3) resulted indecreased duration of growth and increased growth rate and finalarea of leaves 14 of Bromus willdenowii leaves 24of Festuca arundinaceae and leaves 3 and 4 of Lolium multiflorum.In addition, length of leaves 3 and 4 of B. willdenowii increasedwith increased NO3. Increased NO3 resulted in increased areaof leaves 24 of Daciylis glomerata and Lolium perenneand leaves 3 and 4 of Phalaris aquatica but had no effect onextension growth of all three species. Abstract. A subregion of the mitochondrial large subunit (16s) rRNA gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from nine species of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) which serve as natural or experimental vectors of human or bovine Onchocerca parasites. PCR products from each species of blackfly were tested by directed heteroduplex analysis (DHDA), and their genotypes established according to diagnostic banding patterns of the heteroduplex products. Three alleles of mitochondrial 16s rRNA were found to exist in members of the Simulium (Ewardsellum) damnosum sensu lato complex from West Africa, and two alleles were found in the Neotropical Simulium (Psilopelmia) ochraceum Walker complex and the Simulium (Simulium) metallicum Bellardi complex. Different single alleles were detected in Austrosimulium bancrofti , in English S.(S.)noelleri and in two North American laboratory vectors: Simulium (Psilozia) vittatum Zetterstedt and S.(S.)decorum Walker. Phylogenetic analysis of 16s sequences indicated that blackflies from West Africa and the Americas formed distinct clades. Neotropical onchocerciasis vectors were found to be more closely related to Nearctic and Palaearctic non-vector Simulium species than to the African vectors of onchocerciasis. 相似文献

Intemodes from Impatiens sultani shoots, explanted into sterileculture, often developed a transverse separation layer afterone to two weeks and the top then abscised from the bottom ofthe explant. Such abscission occurred more rapidly and in agreater proportion of explants when 00001 per cent auxin (IAA)was provided basally and when younger intemodes and shorterexplants were used. The distance of the separation layer fromthe base of the explant varied little with explant length, butincreased with the concentration of auxin applied basally. It seems that in this adventitious abscission the processesof positional definition and differentiation proceed withoutpause, whereas in normal abscission the position is definedearly in development but the final stage of differentiationof the separation layer is delayed until much later when theorgan senesces. To account for the results from the internodal explants andfrom surgical operations on shoots as well as for the characteristicposition of abscission sites of leaves and fruits, we suggestthat the position of abscission is controlled primarily by auxinacting as a morphogen: abscission sites occur at Y-junctionsjust above the base of the arm with the lower activity and auxinstatus, or in single axes above a region of higher auxin status.In both sites, the auxin concentration decreases in the apicaldirection. This hypothesis is supported by a mathematical model (see Appendix)of the interaction of diffusive and polar transport in controllingthe concentration gradient along intemodes with specified auxinconcentrations maintained basally. The model allows predictionsconcerning the site and timing of abscission which accord withobservations on intemodal explants.
