The streaked gurnard Trigloporus lastoviza produced only one sound type, a growl, lasting up to 3 s and consisting of repeated groups of typically one to three pulses. The foraging fish followed two different strategies. In the first, the fish circled the feeding area, grasped a food item and fled, sometimes displaying aggressively to competitors. With this foraging strategy, fish usually made sounds as they circled, grasped and fled. Fish that growled while circling were more likely to grasp a food item subsequently than were silent fish. The second feeding strategy occurred when a fish had already ingested food or failed to get any. In this case, typically fish searched for food on the substratum or approached and touched other individuals that were feeding, sometimes grabbing food that was spat out during food handling by the other fish. Although payback experiments would be needed to draw firm conclusions on the communicative function of growling during competitive feeding in the streaked gurnard, the results suggest that sound production confers advantages to individuals competing for limited food resources.  相似文献

Understanding how species respond to climate change is key to informing vulnerability assessments and designing effective conservation strategies, yet research efforts on wildlife responses to climate change fail to deliver a representative overview due to inherent biases. Bats are a species-rich, globally distributed group of organisms that are thought to be particularly sensitive to the effects of climate change because of their high surface-to-volume ratios and low reproductive rates. We systematically reviewed the literature on bat responses to climate change to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge, identify research gaps and biases and highlight future research needs. We found that studies are geographically biased towards Europe, North America and Australia, and temperate and Mediterranean biomes, thus missing a substantial proportion of bat diversity and thermal responses. Less than half of the published studies provide concrete evidence for bat responses to climate change. For over a third of studied bat species, response evidence is only based on predictive species distribution models. Consequently, the most frequently reported responses involve range shifts (57% of species) and changes in patterns of species diversity (26%). Bats showed a variety of responses, including both positive (e.g. range expansion and population increase) and negative responses (range contraction and population decrease), although responses to extreme events were always negative or neutral. Spatial responses varied in their outcome and across families, with almost all taxonomic groups featuring both range expansions and contractions, while demographic responses were strongly biased towards negative outcomes, particularly among Pteropodidae and Molossidae. The commonly used correlative modelling approaches can be applied to many species, but do not provide mechanistic insight into behavioural, physiological, phenological or genetic responses. There was a paucity of experimental studies (26%), and only a small proportion of the 396 bat species covered in the examined studies were studied using long-term and/or experimental approaches (11%), even though they are more informative about the effects of climate change. We emphasise the need for more empirical studies to unravel the multifaceted nature of bats' responses to climate change and the need for standardised study designs that will enable synthesis and meta-analysis of the literature. Finally, we stress the importance of overcoming geographic and taxonomic disparities through strengthening research capacity in the Global South to provide a more comprehensive view of terrestrial biodiversity responses to climate change.  相似文献

The in vitro effects of amphotericin B deoxycholate suspension (fungizone) on Paracoccidioides brasiliensis growth, cell viability and transformation were investigated. We also analyzed the protein synthesis patterns of both cellular forms, yeast and mycelium in the presence of AmB. This drug, at 30 μg/ml, highly inhibited yeast growth, which could be recovered depending on treatment time, where the most effective reversion was observed after 6 hr of incubation. The yeast cell viability, that had been partially affected by the drug, could also be efficiently recovered after AmB was removed. The effect of AmB on the cellular dimorphism process showed a strong reduction in the mycelium to yeast transformation (80% inhibition compared to the control without the drug). On the other hand, the transformation from yeast to mycelium in the presence of AmB was 50% affected, relative to the control. In contrast to the growth and cell viability experiments, the reversion effects on dimorphism were partial when the drug was removed, even with only 6 hr treatment. The two-dimensional gels of 35S-labeled proteins revealed a strong reduction in the three species of 80, 71 and 56 kDa in yeast and mycelium when treated with AmB.  相似文献

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare disorder of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) metabolism caused by the defective function of branched-chain α-ketoacid dehydrogenase complex (BCKD). The disease causal mutations can occur either in BCKDHA, BCKDHB or DBT genes encoding respectively the E1α, E1β and E2 subunits of the complex. In this study we report the molecular characterization of 3 Tunisian patients with the classic form of MSUD. Two novel putative mutations have been identified: the alteration c.716A>G (p.Glu239Gly) in BCKDHB and a small deletion (c.1333_1336delAATG; p.Asn445X) detected in DBT gene.  相似文献

Sharks of the genus Carcharhinus exhibit subtle morphological differences that are difficult to observe because of the common practice of head and fin removal, making species identification challenging. A total of 317 sharks, commonly called ‘cação‐baia’ (large individuals) or ‘machote’ (small size) in Brazil, were captured by the tuna fleet at the Santos and Guarujá fishery ports on the southeastern coast of Brazil and identified at the species level by multiplex PCR. The Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 region of ribosomal DNA was amplified using universal primers, and species‐specific primers were used for some of the Carcharhinus species. A total of 313 shark carcasses were directly identified by multiplex PCR. Four carcass samples did not amplify; therefore, the partial COI sequences were used to confirm their taxonomic identity. The results show that more than one species was being traded under the same commercial designation, including some Carcharhinus species that are under protection by federal legislation. Such species misidentification directly affects the long‐term sustainability of sharks.  相似文献

The present study aimed to test different cryoprotectants on cryopreservation of pig ovarian tissue. Pig ovaries (n = 3) were collected at a local slaughterhouse. From each ovary, ten cortex samples were taken. One was immediately fixed (control) and another placed in short-term tissue incubation (STTI control). The other 8 samples were cryopreserved, in pairs, using 4 different cryoprotectants: dimethyl sulphoxide (Me2SO – 1.5 M), ethylene glycol (EG – 1.5 M), propanediol (PROH – 1.5 M) and glycerol (GLY – 10%), all with 0.4% sucrose. Samples were slow cooled and stored in liquid nitrogen for 7 days. After thawing and cryoprotectant removal, one sample from each treatment was immediately fixed and the other was placed in short-term tissue incubation (STTI) for 2 h and then fixed. Samples were processed for histology and transmission electron microscopy. The percentages of morphologically normal follicles (MNF) in cryopreserved tissue using Me2SO (67.0 ± 4.9), EG (81.8 ± 1.4) and PROH (55.9 ± 9.9) were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than observed in fresh control tissue (97.7 ± 1.2). When ovarian tissue was cryopreserved with GLY, no morphologically normal follicles could be found (0%). After STTI, PROH showed a significantly lower percentage of MNF when compared with all other treatments and the control. After ultrastructural analysis, follicles cryopreserved with Me2SO and EG showed some small alterations, but no signs of advanced degeneration. Overall, these were similar to follicles from the control group. In conclusion, it is possible to cryopreserve preantral follicles from pig ovarian tissue using Me2SO or EG.  相似文献

A fossil Mycetophilidae from the Aptian Crato Formation—Cretomanota gondwanica gen. nov., sp. nov.—is described, which is the first mycetophilid from the Crato Formation and corresponds to the oldest known fossil leiine and only the second Gondwanan fossil mycetophilid described so far. Cretomanota gondwanica and both species of Alavamanota Blagoderov and Arillo were added as terminals to the data matrix of a general phylogenetic analysis of the Mycetophilidae, and both fit into the Leiinae. Alavamanota is monophyletic, sister to the clade composed by Cretomanota and the extant genus Manota Williston. The biology of the extant members of this fungivorous family corroborates the reconstruction of the Crato palaeoenvironment as including woodlands with humid habitats and microhabitats. The presence of a Cretaceous member of the tribe Manotini at low latitudes in South America reinforces the hypothesis that the clade with all manotines except Leiella Edwards corresponds to a Lower Cretaceous offshoot from a group in southern Gondwana expanding its distribution to more northern areas into the Gondwana and into Laurasia.  相似文献
