The cause of headache in persons going to high altitude is unknown. Relatively severe hypoxemia in susceptible subjects could induce large increases in cerebral blood flow that then could initiate the headache. Thus we measured noninvasively, by Doppler ultrasound, changes in internal carotid arterial blood velocity (velocity) in 12 subjects in Denver (1,600 m) and repeatedly up to 7 h at a simulated altitude of 4,800 m (barometric pressure = 430 Torr). Six subjects, selected because of prior history of high-altitude headache, developed comparatively severe headache at 4,800 m, and four subjects, without such history, remained well. Two subjects developed moderate headache. Velocity at 4,800 m did not correlate with symptom development, arterial O2 saturation, or end-tidal PCO2. Also, neither velocity nor blood pressure was consistently elevated above the Denver base-line values. During measurements of hypercapnic ventilatory response in Denver, velocity increased linearly with end-tidal PCO2, confirming that our Doppler method could demonstrate an increase. Also, 30 min of isocapnic or poikilocapnic hypoxia caused small increases in velocity (+8 and +6%) during the base-line measurement at low altitude. Although even a small increase in cerebral perfusion could contribute to headache symptoms at high altitude, cerebral blood flow does not appear to play a primary role.  相似文献

Diaphragmatic contractility was assessed in spontaneously breathing ketamine-anesthetized rabbits by measuring the strength of diaphragmatic contraction in response to bilateral supramaximal phrenic nerve stimulation at frequencies between 10 and 100 Hz. During 10-180 min of inspiratory resistive loading, contractility decreased by approximately 40%, and hypoxemia and both respiratory and lactic acidosis developed. After 10 min of recovery, both the response to high-frequency stimulation (100 Hz) and the arterial PO2 and PCO2 returned to base-line levels, whereas metabolic acidosis and reduced response to low-frequency stimulation (10-20 Hz) persisted. Similar levels of hypoxemia and respiratory acidosis in the absence of inspiratory resistive loading did not alter diaphragmatic contractility. We conclude that in anesthetized rabbits excessive inspiratory resistive loading results in partially reversible diaphragm fatigue of the high- and low-frequency types, accompanied by hypoventilation and lactic acidosis.  相似文献

Circulatory fluid shifts were studied in middle-aged runners (6 males and 5 females, ages 32-58 yr) during a 42.2-km marathon race run in mild weather (dry-bulb temperature = 17.5-20.4 degrees C). Running times for the subjects were 3:12-4:40 (mean values were 3:34 for males and 4:10 for females). Venous blood samples were taken without stasis in all subjects seated at rest before the start of the race and within 3 min of finishing; eight of the subjects also paused for samples at 6 and 27 km during the race. At 6 km, body weight loss averaged less than 1%, whereas plasma volume (PV) had decreased by 6.5% in male subjects and 8.6% in female subjects. By the end of the race, hypohydration had reached 3.2% in male subjects and 2.9% in female subjects, but PV in both groups remained stable. Sweat rates during the race averaged 545 and 429 g X m-2 X h-1 for male and female subjects, respectively, with ad lib. water intake replacing 21-72% of fluid loss. Increases in plasma protein concentration throughout the race reflected the observed initial decrease in PV. The interpretation of PV responses to exercise and/or hypohydration is critically dependent on selection of base-line conditions; we were able to control for posture-exercise effects by treating the early exercise (6 km) sample as the base line for examining the effects of later fluid loss. Under these conditions, the vascular compartment resisted volume depletion. The ability to maintain stable PV can be explained in part by relationships among oncotic and hydrostatic pressures in the intra- and extravascular fluid compartments.  相似文献

High surface tension pulmonary edema induced by detergent aerosol   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The effect of the detergent dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate on pulmonary extravascular water volume (PEWV) was studied in adult anesthetized mongrel dogs. The detergent was dissolved as a 1% solution in a vehicle of equal volumes of 95% ethanol and normal saline and administered by ultrasonic nebulizer attached to the inspiratory tubing of a piston ventilator. Two hours following detergent aerosol PEWV measured gravimetrically was increased compared with either animals receiving no aerosol or those receiving an aerosol of vehicle alone. Loss of surfactant activity and increased alveolar surface tension were demonstrated by Wilhelmy balance studies of minced lung extracts, by a fall in static compliance, and by evidence of atelectasis and instability noted by gross observation and by in vivo microscopy. No significant changes in colloid oncotic pressure or pulmonary microvascular hydrostatic pressure were observed. These data suggest that pulmonary edema can be induced by increased alveolar surface tension and support the concept that one of the major roles of pulmonary surfactant is to prevent pulmonary edema.  相似文献

Total lung capacity (TLC), inspiratory capacity, functional residual capacity, and deflation stability of prematurely delivered Macaca nemestrina primates were measured serially during development of, and recovery from, hyaline membrane disease (HMD) to relate changes in lung volumes to changes in deflation stability. Gestational age-matched primates that did not develop HMD served as controls. TLC, measured by N2 washout, fell at 2-12 h of age (P less than 0.0001) in animals with HMD and remained lower than controls for at least 48 h (P less than 0.005). However, deflation stability, defined as the fraction of TLC remaining upon deflation to 10 cm H2O, improved from 2 to 12 h of age (P less than 0.001). Postmortem studies confirm the measurements of TLC and deflation stability and provide evidence that interstitial thickening and obstruction of air spaces with debris may be partially responsible for the observed changes in TLC in primates that develop HMD. It has been assumed that TLC is reduced in HMD because of atelectasis from elevated alveolar surface tension, but the sequential measurements in these animals suggest that other mechanisms also contribute.  相似文献

Summary The aim of this investigation was to find out why some antarctic seals tolerate fluoride levels in their food (krill) that would be toxic to man. The fluoride content of different soft and hard tissues, urine and feces from 16 L. carcinophagus, 13 L. weddelli and 2 A. tropicalis (urine only) were determined by the fluoride sensitive electrode or by a photometric method (urine). Results and conclusions are following: All soft tissues have low concentrations of fluoride in the same range as soft tissues from non antarctic and non krill eating marine or terrestrial vertebrates. But within the soft tissues there are significant differences in the fluoride content (blood: 0.001 ppm F/dw — brain: 9.1 ppm F/dw). A special tolerance for fluoride of soft tissues can be excluded. Compared with man or weddell-seals the crabeater-seals store two times more fluoride in their skeleton. Hard structures that stop their mineralisation early in the development like teeth have only a relatively low fluoride content. For the same reason only neglectable amounts of fluoride could be detected in hair. Fluoride excretion by the kidneys is efficient and is — besides the storage of fluoride in the skeleton — the second mechanism to guarantee a good blood homoiostasis for fluoride. Until now it is impossible to decide how much fluoride from the food is resorbed by the digestive tract.  相似文献

Summary Climatic, edaphic, and vegetation parameters are compared among three Subantarctic islands and one Maritime Antarctic island, and Northern Hemisphere tundras and tundra-like ecosystems (ranging from higharctic to cool-temperate oceanic and temperate alpine), mainly by Principal Component Analyses (PCA). All analyses of abiotic variables emphasized the extreme oceanicity of the Southern Hemisphere sites and showed the strong influence of seaspray on soil nutrient ratios in the southern sites. Analyses of climate classified all the southern sites as Cold Oceanic within a series of very oceanic climates that were distinct from the continental/subalpine climates more typical of the northern sites. Four factorial groups were derived from the vectors in PCA of soils and climate combined. Each was a grouping of several variables that was essentially independent of the other groups. They were: general climatic severity, soil base status, supply of labile nutrients, and a combined index of oceanicity with organic/mineral balance and drainage. The ecological significance of these is discussed. The range of soil nutrient levels in the southern sites is approximately equal to that of the northern sites; however, in the southern sites soil nutrient levels are inversely related to climatic severity while in the north the reverse is true. The two most important causes of these opposed trends are the relative ages of the sites and the much greater effects of sea-based vertebrates (e.g. seals and seabirds) in the southern islands. Cluster analyses of component scores derived from climatic and soil data linked the southern sites with northern sites at higher latitudes, indicating the effect of the Antarctic continent on the Southern Ocean (hence on the overall climate of the southern islands) and of wind-chill on the aerial and soil climates of the southern sites. Vegetation patterns (derived from PCA of life form data) were more complex because of the serial replacement of one lifeform by onother along continuous environmental gradients. Wind exposure was an important element in the first two vectors derived from the PCA of the botanical data. The Southern Hemisphere sites exhibited almost the full range of vegetation types found in the Northern Hemisphere, despite their floristic poverty. Variation within individual islands was comparable with that found at considerably higher (up to 30° more) northern latitudes and reflects the overriding importance of wind exposure in the southern islands. Subarctic ecosystems are generally less severe forms of Arctic ones, and decreasing latitude leads to increasingly milder environments with no great changes overall in continentality. In contrast, the Subantarctic combines elements from the extremes of the range of northen tundras (i.e. high-Arctic and cool-temperate oceanic) with its own peculiar features (e.g. animal influences) to produce ecosystems that are qualitatively different both from Subarctic systems and from the continental Antarctic regions to which they are geographically closest.  相似文献

Summary Vertical net haul diatom assemblages from near South Georgia, and from between Africa and Antarctica, were examined and compared. Variation among South Georgia stations was examined by principal component, cluster and canonical discriminant analyses. Diatom distributions provide evidence for at least two distinct water masses. The region north of the island is characterized by neritic, temperate diatoms and by an assemblage with low species diversity. The region south of the island is characterized by oceanic, antarctic species and relatively high species diversity. The regions are most distinct to the west of the island, intergrading east of the island. Within the north-south division, five station groupings were detected on the basis of distribution of dominant net diatoms. By comparing classical species ecological categorizations to results of principal component analysis, a neritic-oceanic factor was identified from net diatom distributions. This factor was common to both areas in spite of the fact that Biscoe and Agulhas collections were from different seasons.  相似文献

The urinary bladder of the mouse contracts to several agonists, namely acetylcholine, noradrenaline, adrenaline, histamine, angiotensin, serotonin, purine nucleotides and prostaglandin F2 alpha. Atropine partially reduced the contraction induced by electrical stimulation, whereas propranolol and tolazoline were ineffective. The atropine resistant component of the neurogenic response was reduced by indomethacin. Methysergide and diphenhydramine were ineffective. Desensitization of the bladder by alpha,beta-methylene ATP abolished the response to ATP and greatly reduced the non-adrenergic non-cholinergic component of the neurogenic response. The results suggest that ATP could be the transmitter responsible for the non-cholinergic non-adrenergic contraction of the mouse urinary bladder.  相似文献
