A 27-year-old Puerto Rican man presented to Yale-New Haven Hospital with a six-week history of left-sided headache, diplopia, and drooping of the left side of his face. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed a lymphocytic pleocytosis and a CT scan of the brain revealed an unusual intrapontine mass lesion requiring systemic antifungal therapy. This case emphasizes many of the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations required for effective therapy of fungal disease in the central nervous system.  相似文献

Benzene, an accepted leukemogen, has been suggested to cause other hemato- and lymphopoietic cancers. Here we review the published literature for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and occupational exposure to benzene. Six cohorts, sixteen case–control studies and two studies of other designs were identified through keyword searches of bibliographic databases. Twenty-two of twenty-four studies found no association between NHL and ever exposed to benzene compared to never; a random-effects meta-analysis gave a pooled risk estimate of 1.11 (95% confidence interval 0.94–1.30). Our finding of no effect agrees with one of two previous meta-analyses. The other meta-analysis examined if high benzene exposure increased NHL risk but a lack of consistent exposure categories within the same metric should have precluded pooling risks by exposure level. Instead, we reviewed whether dose–response relationships existed. The best available data came from six studies where exposure was estimated from historical measurements and on the whole, no trends in risks of NHL with rising cumulative, average, peak, or duration of benzene exposure were found. NHL is a heterogeneous group of malignancies and although less well-studied, benzene was not associated with any NHL subtype. In conclusion, benzene at either low or high doses does not increase the risk of NHL.  相似文献

Numerous experiments have demonstrated that skin has a profound influence on the pattern of limb regeneration in urodeles. In this investigation, the fate during regeneration of marked cells derived from narrow strips of skin inserted into different positions around the limb circumference has been followed. Skin strips were taken from triploid axolotls and transplanted into diploid sibling animals. The distribution of trinucleolate cells was determined at the site of amputation and in the regenerated limb. The results indicate that at the time of amputation marked cells appear to be localized to the graft, whereas in the regenerated marked cells may be found at all proximal-distal levels and at any position around the circumference of the limb. These results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for distal outgrowth.  相似文献

Two patients who presented initially with breast masses proven to be plasmacytomas, are described. In both cases the breast masses led to the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, which was retrospectively already present at the time of the breast biopsy. One patient with IgG lambda-type myeloma developed plasma cell leukemia and amyloidosis and failed to respond to radiochemotherapy. The second patient was in complete remission, four years after therapy, but has subsequently relapsed and died. All cases of breast plasmacytoma, described in the medical literatures are reviewed, and guidelines for future therapy are suggested.  相似文献

A new class of Phycomyces behavioral mutants with enhanced tropic responses has been analyzed genetically to determine the number of genes involved and the nature of their expression. These hypertropic mutants carry pleiotropic nuclear mutations. Besides their effects on sensory behavior, they also affect morphology and meiotic processes. Behavioral analyses of heterokaryons containing hypertropic and wild-type nuclei in varying proportions show that the hypertropic mutations in strains L82, L84, L86, and L88 are strongly dominant. Conversely, the hypertropic mutations carried by the strains L83, L85, and L87 are strongly recessive. We performed recombination analyses between hypertropic mutants and mutants with diminished phototropism, affected in the seven genes madA to madG. We found no evidence of linkage between the hypertropic mutations and any of these mad mutations. From crosses, we isolated double mutants carrying hypertropic mutations together with madC (night blind) and madG (stiff) mutations. The behavioral phenotypes of the double mutants are intermediate between those of the parentals. Complementation analyses show that the three recessive hypertropic mutations affect the same gene, which we call madH. The expression of the recessive hypertropic allele becomes dominant in heterokaryons carrying madC and madH nuclei; the madC gene has been implicated separately with the photoreceptor at the input to the sensory pathway, while the madH gene is associated with the growth control output. This result suggests the physical interaction of both gene products, madH and madC, in a molecular complex for the photosensory transduction chain.  相似文献
