Evolutionary studies typically focus on adaptations to particular environmental conditions, thereby often ignoring the role of possible constraints. Here we focus on the case of variation in dorsal wing melanization in a satyrine butterfly Pararge aegeria. Because melanin is a complex polymer, its synthesis may be constrained if ambient conditions limit the resource budget. This hypothesis was tested by comparing melanization among butterflies that fed as larvae on host grasses experiencing different drought-stress treatments. Treatment differences were validated both at the level of the host plant (nitrogen, carbonate, and water content) and of the butterfly (life-history traits: survival, development time, and size at maturity). Melanization rate was measured as average gray value of the basal dorsal wing area. This area, close to the thorax, is known to be functionally significant for basking in order to thermoregulate. Individuals reared on drought-stressed host plants developed paler wings, and development of darker individuals was slower and less stable as estimated by their level of fluctuating asymmetry. These results provide evidence that melanin is indeed costly to synthesize, and that differences in environmental quality can induce phenotypic variation in wing melanization. Therefore, studies dealing with spatial and/or temporal patterns of variation in wing melanization should not focus on adaptive explanations alone, but rather on a cost-benefit balance under particular sets of environmental conditions.  相似文献

Realized fitness in a fluctuating environment depends on the capacity of an ectothermic organism to function at different temperatures. Flying heliotherms like butterflies use flight for almost all activities like mate location, foraging and host plant searching and oviposition. Several studies tested the importance of ambient temperature, thermoregulation and butterfly activity. Here, we test the influence of variation in flight morphology in interaction with differences in body temperature on locomotor performance, which has not been thoroughly examined so far. Take-off free flight performance was tested at two different body temperatures in males and females of the speckled wood butterfly Pararge aegeria. We found that both males and females accelerated faster at the optimal body temperature compared to the suboptimal one. The multivariate analyses showed significant sex-specific contributions of flight morphology, body temperature treatment and feeding load to explain variation in acceleration performance. Female and male butterflies with a large relative thorax (i.e. flight muscle investment) mass and large, slender wings (i.e. aspect ratio) accelerated fast at optimal temperature. However, high aspect ratio individuals accelerated slowly at suboptimal temperature. Females of low body mass accelerated fast at optimal, but slowly at suboptimal body temperature. In males, there was an interaction effect between body and relative thorax mass: light males with high relative thorax mass had higher performance than males with a low relative thorax mass. In addition, relative distance to the centre of forewing area was positively related to acceleration at both temperatures in males. Males and females with higher feeding loads had lower levels of acceleration. Finally, males that were able to accelerate fast under both temperatures, had a highly significantly heavier relative thorax, lower body and abdomen mass. More generally, this study shows that the significance of butterfly flight morphology in terms of flight performance is at least partially dependent on body temperature.  相似文献

Microorganisms are associated with a variety of ancient geological materials. However, conclusive proof that these organisms are as old as the geological material and not more recent introductions has generally been lacking. Over the years, numerous reports of the isolation of ancient bacteria from geological materials have appeared. Most of these have suffered from the fact that the protocol for the surface sterilization of the sample was either poorly defined, inadequate or rarely included data to validate the overall effectiveness of the sterilization protocol. With proper sterility validation and isolation protocol, a legitimate claim for the isolation of an ancient microbe can be made. Biochemical, physiological, or morphological data indicate that these ancient microbes are not significantly different from modern isolates. As the role (decomposition) of modern and ancient microbes has not changed over time, it is probably unreasonable to expect these organisms to be vastly different. A discussion on the reasons for the homogeneity of ancient and modern microbes is presented. Abstract .1. Larvae from eggs of fifteen wild-caught speckled wood females were reared individually under common conditions (LD 18:6 h and 17 °C) in the laboratory.
2. Pupal colour (green or brown) and the following adult morphological variables that are known or assumed to be related to behavioural variation (thermoregulation, flight, crypsis) were studied: size, relative thorax mass, area of yellow patches on the dorsal forewing, size of submarginal eyespots on the dorsal hindwing, colour of the dorsal thorax, dorsal basal wing, and dorsal distal wing.
3. The results of the breeding experiment indicate significant differences in adult morphological traits among families, sexes, and pupal colour types.
4. All adult morphological variables (except spot size and thorax colouration) differed significantly among families, suggesting genetic variation underlying the phenotypic variation. Heritabilities for these features were intermediate (0.38) to high (> 1).
5. Apart from known aspects (e.g. size), novel aspects of the sexual dimorphism were found: females had paler thoraxes than males, which relates to higher abundance of fur on the thorax and hence to thermoregulatory differences.
6. Green pupae produced larger individuals with a larger relative thorax mass than brown pupae. Green pupae produced adults with a paler basal wing colour in females, but not in males. These relationships are novel and suggest a trade-off between juvenile and adult investment.  相似文献

Insight into demographic processes that operate at larger spatial scales can be achieved through studying local populations when a particular species of interest is examined over time, by many investigators, in a variety of locations. On the west coast of North America, Mazzaella splendens (Setchell et Gardner) Fredericq is such a species of interest. A synthesis of local demographic studies of M. splendens from the late 1960s to the present reveals a pattern that is potentially common to the larger natural populations. This is the pattern: population density is high in summer and low in winter for both alternate free‐living life history phases of M. splendens. The magnitude of this seasonal change decreases in increasingly wave‐exposed habitats. In wave‐sheltered habitats there is a seasonal alternation from summer haploid to winter diploid dominance. This alternation gradually changes to constant diploid dominance as wave exposure in the habitat increases. Changes in population density are primarily a function of appearances and disappearances of perennating basal crusts (genets), as modules are produced or lost, rather than differential module production by genets of one phase over those of the other. To test the generality of this pattern, we examined seasonal changes in density, in local populations of M. splendens, in both a wave‐sheltered and a wave‐exposed habitat at Second Beach, Barkley Sound. Greater seasonal fluctuation in population density at wave‐sheltered, compared to wave‐exposed habitats is supported as a pattern potentially common to the natural populations of M. splendens. A change from summer haploid dominance in wave‐sheltered areas to summer diploid dominance in wave‐exposed areas is similarly supported. All changes in population density were the result of appearances and disappearances of genets rather than differential module production by haploid versus diploid basal crusts, also consistent with previous observations. A seasonal alternation in phase dominance, however, was absent from the wave‐sheltered site at Second Beach, Barkley Sound for 3 consecutive years. Seasonal alternation in phase dominance of M. splendens appears dependent on local conditions and is not common to all natural populations.  相似文献

The uptakes of high-affinity concentrations (10–8 M) ofmeta-tyramine (m-TA),para-tyramine (p-TA), and dopamine (DA) into rat striatal slices have been shown to be inhibited by DNP and ouabain. We now demonstrate that cocaine (5×10–6 M) and low concentrations of sodium ion (26×10–3 M) also reduced these uptakes. The spontaneous efflux and the release [induced by an elevated concentration of potassium ion (5×10–2 M)] of each of the previously accumulated amines were studied in the presence and absence of added calcium ions. The spontaneous efflux of each amine (especially the tyramines) was enhanced by the absence of calcium ions. Part of this enhancement seemed to be due to an inhibition of a calcium-dependent reuptake. The elevated concentration of potassium ion proved to be an effective releaser of each amine; and for DA, such release was decreased by the removal of calcium. Form- andp-TA, however, the removal of calcium either did not reduce or completely abolished the releases depending upon the duration of the calcium removal. IL-6 and TNF-alpha have been associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, abnormalities in muscle fatty acid (FA) metabolism are strongly associated with the development of insulin resistance. However, few studies have directly examined the effects of either IL-6 or TNF-alpha on skeletal muscle FA metabolism. Here, we used a pulse-chase technique to determine the effect of IL-6 (50-5,000 pg/ml) and TNF-alpha (50-5,000 pg/ml) on FA metabolism in isolated rat soleus muscle. IL-6 (5,000 pg/ml) increased exogenous and endogenous FA oxidation by approximately 50% (P < 0.05) but had no effect on FA uptake or incorporation of FA into endogenous lipid pools. In contrast, TNF-alpha had no effect on FA oxidation but increased FA incorporation into diacylglycerol (DAG) by 45% (P < 0.05). When both IL-6 (5,000 pg/ml) and insulin (10 mU/ml) were present, IL-6 attenuated insulin's suppressive effect on FA oxidation, increasing exogenous FA oxidation (+37%, P < 0.05). Furthermore, in the presence of insulin, IL-6 reduced the esterification of FA to triacylglycerol by 22% (P < 0.05). When added in combination with IL-6 or leptin (10 microg/ml), the TNF-alpha-induced increase in DAG synthesis was inhibited. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that IL-6 plays an important role in regulating fat metabolism in muscle, increasing rates of FA oxidation, and attenuating insulin's lipogenic effects. In contrast, TNF-alpha had no effect on FA oxidation but increased FA incorporation into DAG, which may be involved in the development of TNF-alpha-induced insulin resistance in skeletal muscle.  相似文献
