The biofilm thickness in membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs) is an important factor affecting system performance because excessive biofilm formation on the membrane surface inhibits gas diffusion to the interior of the biofilm, resulting in a significant reduction in the performance of contaminant removal. This study provides innovative insights into the control of biofilm thickness in O2-based MBfRs by using the quorum quenching (QQ) method. The study was carried out in MBfRs operated at different gas pressures and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) using QQ beads containing Rhodococcus sp. BH4 at different amounts. The highest performance was observed in reactors operated with 0.21 ml QQ bead/cm2 membrane surface area, 12 HRTs and 1.40 atm. Over this period, the performance increase in chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 25%, while the biofilm thickness on the membrane surface was determined to be 250 μm. Moreover, acetate and equivalent oxygen flux results reached 6080 and 10 640 mg·m−2·d−1 maximum values, respectively. The extracellular polymeric substances of the biofilm decreased significantly with the increase of gas pressure and QQ beads amount. Polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis results showed that the microbial community in the MBfR system changed depending on operating conditions and bead amount. The results showed that the QQ method was an effective method to control the biofilm thickness in MBfR and provide insights for future research. 相似文献

The stopping power in some biological compounds for electrons and positrons was calculated over the energy range from 100 eV to 1 GeV. Total stopping power was obtained by summing the electronic (collisional) and radiative stopping power of the target materials and then employing the continuous slowing down approximation (CSDA) to calculate the path length of incident particles in the target. An effective charge approximation was used for the calculation of collisional stopping power, and an analytical expression for the radiation length was applied to obtain the radiative stopping power. Calculations of stopping power and CSDA range were based mostly on analytical expressions, to allow for an easy calculation of these parameters. Aim We used fossil records to explore patterns of change in vegetation composition, turnover and diversity along an elevational gradient during the late‐glacial to early Holocene, and to locate the elevations most sensitive to past climate changes. Location Romania. Methods Changes in the late‐glacial vegetation communities were inferred from seven published pollen records distributed within the main vegetation belts of the Romanian Carpathians, at elevations from 275 to 1840 m. Principal components analysis, detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) and rarefaction analysis were undertaken on these data. Results DCCA indicates that compositional change is strongest (SD 1.2, c. 70%) at the late‐glacial/Holocene transition (c. 11,500 cal. yr bp ), but significant shifts also occur at c. 14,700, c. 13,800 and c. 12,700 cal. yr bp (SD 0.4–0.8, 25–50%). Palynological turnover is greater for mid‐elevation records (730–1100 m) than at low and high elevations. Intervals of greater palynological richness occur between c. 13,800 and 12,500 cal. yr bp and after 11,500 cal. yr bp , and intervals of lower richness occur before c. 14,000 cal. yr bp and between c. 12,900 and 11,500 cal. yr bp . Main conclusions Variations in species composition during repeated climate changes of the late‐glacial suggest that community composition at a given time was not only a result of the environmental conditions of that period, but also the legacy of previous cumulative recruitment and extirpation events. Turnover estimates suggest that mid‐elevations have been the most sensitive to climate change during the late‐glacial and early Holocene. Palynological richness estimates show a less clear elevational pattern and no evidence for a greater sensitivity of this measure of biodiversity at high elevations to past climate change. However, results may have been affected by taxa with high pollen productivity and distance dispersability. Our finding concurs with other palaeoecological and local‐scale modelling studies in suggesting that small populations have survived in favourable microhabitats embedded within larger unsuitable areas during the late‐glacial, features not captured by broad‐scale model predictions. 相似文献

The limiting factors in the continuous production of nisin are high amount of biomass loss and low dilution rate application. In this study, a chitin-including continuous nisin fermentation system (CICON-FER) was constructed for high volumetric nisin production using nisin producer L. lactis displaying cell wall chitin-binding domain (ChBD) together with chitin in the reactor. In this respect, the highest binding conditions of relevant L. lactis cells to chitin were determined. Then the chitin flakes carrying nisin-producing L. lactis cells were used within the CICON-FER system at different dilution rates (0.1–0.9 h?1) and initial glucose concentrations (20–60 g l?1). The results revealed that the pH 7 conditions and the use of 100 mM sodium phosphate buffer with 0.1 % Tween 20 and Triton X-100 significantly increased the binding capacity of ChBD displaying L. lactis cells to chitin. The constructed CICON-FER system maintained the presence of the ChBD surface displaying L. lactis cells in the reactor system until 0.9 h?1 dilution rate that resulted in a considerably high level of volumetric nisin production and productivity (10,500 IU ml?1 and 9,450 IU ml?1 h?1, respectively) with the combination of a 0.9-h?1 dilution rate and a 40-g l?1 initial glucose concentration. Background
HIV-1 viruses are highly capable of mutating their proteins to escape the presentation of CTL epitopes in their current host. Upon transmission to another host, some escape mutations revert, but other remain stable in the virus sequence for at least several years. Depending on the rate of accumulation and reversion of escape mutations, HIV-1 could reach a high level of adaptation to the human population. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), which include the prototypic autistic disorder (AD), Asperger’s syndrome (AS) and pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified (PDD‐NOS), are complex neurodevelopmental conditions of unknown aetiology. The current study investigated the metabolites in the methionine cycle, the transsulphuration pathway, folate, vitamin B12 and the C677T polymorphism of the MTHFR gene in three groups of children diagnosed with AD (n= 15), AS (n= 5) and PDD‐NOS (n= 19) and their age‐ and sex‐matched controls (n= 25). No metabolic disturbances were seen in the AS patients, while in the AD and PDD‐NOS groups, lower plasma levels of methionine (P= 0.01 and P= 0.03, respectively) and α‐aminobutyrate were observed (P= 0.01 and P= 0.001, respectively). Only in the AD group, plasma cysteine (P= 0.02) and total blood glutathione (P= 0.02) were found to be reduced. Although there was a trend towards lower levels of serine, glycine, N, N‐dimethylglycine in AD patients, the plasma levels of these metabolites as well as the levels of homocysteine and cystathionine were not statistically different in any of the ASDs groups. The serum levels of vitamin B12 and folate were in the normal range. The results of the MTHFR gene analysis showed a normal distribution of the C677T polymorphism in children with ASDs, but the frequency of the 677T allele was slightly more prevalent in AD patients. Our study indicates a possible role for the alterations in one carbon metabolism in the pathophysiology of ASDs and provides, for the first time, preliminary evidence for metabolic and genetic differences between clinical subtypes of ASDs. 相似文献
