Maasai settlements in Amboseli are distributed in a pattern which reflects various physical and biological characteristics of the landscape. The settlements avoid hillslope gradients exceeding 0.08, and the lower sections of long hillsides, which receive large amounts of runoff. Long, relatively high hillslopes are difficult for exhausted cattle to climb at the end of the dry season, and even the welldrained sites at the upper ends of these slopes are not commonly used. Deep, poorly drained, and light-colored soils are avoided because they affect the comfort of humans, and especially the milk production of cattle. The settlements are located away from dense tree and bush vegetation because of the danger of predators, but during occupation of the site important changes in the vegetation are wrought by the use of trees for settlement construction and firewood. The reasons for the pattern were elucidated by making a set of systematic measurements of settlement distributions and various environmental factors. The conclusions of this analysis were then checked and extended through conversations with Maasai elders. These latter exhibited a sophisticated knowledge of environmental characteristics and processes which is reflected in their choice of settlement sites. Such knowledge has commonly been overlooked by other writers on the subject of pastoralism.  相似文献

A rapid and sensitive in vitro assay was developed to quantitatively assess the adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis to a hydrophobic plastic surface. The assay is based upon the detection of cell-associated urease activity as a marker of bacteria remaining adherent to the polystyrene microwells of flat-bottomed, 96-well tissue culture plates. Using ATCC 35984, a slime-producing strain of S. epidermidis, the assay could detect as few as 3 x 10(3) bacteria and was linear to 3.5 x 10(7) bacteria. The adherence of both slime-positive and slime-negative coagulase-negative staphylococci could be evaluated by using this method. This assay could be used to examine factors which influence the adherence of individual S. epidermidis strains to hydrophobic surfaces and to develop agents or coating materials which suppress the adherence of coagulase-negative staphylococci to biomedical implants.  相似文献

Although erythropoietin ameliorates experimental type 2 diabetes with neuropathy, serious side effects limit its potential clinical use. ARA 290, a nonhematopoietic peptide designed from the structure of erythropoietin, interacts selectively with the innate repair receptor that mediates tissue protection. ARA 290 has shown efficacy in preclinical and clinical studies of metabolic control and neuropathy. To evaluate the potential activity of ARA 290 in type 2 diabetes and painful neuropathy, subjects were enrolled in this phase 2 study. ARA 290 (4 mg) or placebo were self-administered subcutaneously daily for 28 d and the subjects followed for an additional month without further treatment. No potential safety issues were identified. Subjects receiving ARA 290 exhibited an improvement in hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c) and lipid profiles throughout the 56 d observation period. Neuropathic symptoms as assessed by the PainDetect questionnaire improved significantly in the ARA 290 group. Mean corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD) was reduced significantly compared with normal controls and subjects with a mean CNFD >1 standard deviation from normal showed a significant increase in CNFD compared with no change in the placebo group. These observations suggest that ARA 290 may benefit both metabolic control and neuropathy in subjects with type 2 diabetes and deserves continued clinical evaluation.  相似文献

In a 6-h experiment where xanthophyll inter-conversion was blocked by the inhibitor dithiothreitol (DTT), corals in full sunlight showed a significant increase in oxidative damage and cnidarian antioxidant enzyme concentrations compared with controls. By comparison, antioxidant enzyme concentrations did not increase within the symbiotic algae. In addition, the normal reduction in steady state chlorophyll fluorescence (Ft) and maximum fluorescence (Fm′), in response to increased irradiance, was initially suppressed in the DTT-treated corals, but after 6 h, both parameters had reduced to levels similar to controls with a functional xanthophyll cycle. Extreme host retraction was observed in corals treated with DDT in full sunlight compared with untreated corals in full sunlight and DTT-treated corals in dim irradiance. These results suggest that the coral host is capable of using behavioural (tissue retraction) and biochemical defences (antioxidant enzymes) to protect the symbiotic algae under high natural irradiance when the xanthophyll cycle is absent. While these defences could not prevent oxidative damage, nonetheless, algal numbers and algal chlorophyll levels were not affected.  相似文献
