Although female parasitic wasps are known to learn to associate odors with hosts and food, the ability of males to learn and detect odors has been neglected. We conducted laboratory experiments to compare the detection ability of learned odors between males and females in the larval parasitoid Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). We first conditioned males and females to associate sucrose water with methyl benzoate, 3‐octanone, or cyclohexanone, and then observed their behavior toward various concentrations (40 ng l?1?4 mg l?1) of the trained odors. Conditioned male wasps responded as well as female wasps to various concentrations of the three odors. Response times by wasps to these three odors were not significantly different between sexes. For the three odors, response times of both sexes were longer at the intermediate concentrations (40–400 µg l?1) than the higher or lower concentrations. The present study suggests that M. croceipes males can learn and respond to the three chemicals tested as well as the females, and conditioned males are as sensitive to learned odors as conditioned females. By using their sensitive learning and odor‐detection capabilities, M. croceipes males could search for food sources as efficiently as females under natural conditions. 相似文献

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is a forage legume widely used in combination with grass in pastures because of its ability to fix nitrogen. We have constructed a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library of an advanced breeding line of white clover. The library contains 37 248 clones with an average insert size of approximately 85 kb, representing an approximate 3-fold coverage of the white clover genome based on an estimated genome size of 960 Mb. The BAC library was pooled and screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification using both white clover microsatellites and PCR-based markers derived from Medicago truncatula, resulting in an average of 6 hits per marker; this supports the estimated 3-fold genome coverage in this allotetraploid species. PCR-based screening of 766 clones with a multiplex set of chloroplast primers showed that only 0.5% of BAC clones contained chloroplast-derived inserts. The library was further evaluated by sequencing both ends of 724 of the clover BACs. These were analysed with respect to their sequence content and their homology to the contents of a range of plant gene, expressed sequence tag, and repeat element databases. Forty-three microsatellites were discovered in the BAC-end sequences (BESs) and investigated as potential genetic markers in white clover. The BESs were also compared with the partially sequenced genome of the model legume M. truncatula with the specific intention of identifying putative comparative-tile BACs, which represent potential regions of microsynteny between the 2 species; 14 such BACs were discovered. The results suggest that a large-scale BAC-end sequencing strategy has the potential to anchor a significant proportion of the genome of white clover onto the gene-space sequence of M. truncatula. 相似文献

Animism has been a topic of interest for some time, and several innovative approaches challenging earlier conventional perspectives have been presented. Inspired by the recent thinking on this classical anthropological subject, this article explores conceptualizations of the human-spirit, or transdimensional, relationship central to any theory on animism. Drawing on fieldwork among the Matsigenka of the tropical lowlands of southeastern Peru, conceptions of and motivations for the interaction with spirits are examined. For a society that places high moral value on equality and conviviality, the emphasis on discrimination and hierarchical relations that is prominent in many studies is inappropriate. As an alternative more congenial to the Matsigenka ethos, the article stresses the convivial qualities of sharing and mutual trust. Both these virtues play down the importance of hierarchy and discrimination allowing us to understand what motivates the Matsigenka to enter into an often arduous and demanding relationship with spirits. 相似文献

Transmembrane domains (TMDs) of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) have very low water solubility and often aggregate during purification and biophysical investigations. To circumvent this problem many laboratories add oligolysines to the N- and C-termini of peptides that correspond to a TMD. To systematically evaluate the effect of the oligolysines on the biophysical properties of a TMD we synthesized 21 peptides corresponding to either the second (TPIFIINQVSLFLIILHSALYFKY) or sixth (SFHILLIMSSQSLLVPSIIFILAYSLK) TMD of Ste2p, a GPCR from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Added to the termini of these peptides were either Lys(n) (n = 1,2,3) or the corresponding native loop residues. The biophysical properties of the peptides were investigated by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy in trifluoroethanol-water mixtures, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles and dimyristoylphosphocholine (DMPC)-dimyristoylphosphoglycerol (DMPG) vesicles, and by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) in DMPC/DMPG multilayers. The results show that the conformation assumed depends on the number of lysine residues and the sequence of the TMD. Identical peptides with native or an equal number of lysine residues exhibited different biophysical properties and structural tendencies. 相似文献

We examined the distribution of annexin 6 (ANX6) in rat brain with immunohistochemistry (IHC). Several neuronal cell populations were intensely labeled with the ANX6 monoclonal antibody (MAb), including layer 5 of neocortex, the lateral septum, the lateral hypothalamic area, the red nucleus, and the Purkinje cell layer in cerebellum. Neuronal immunolabeling was localized to the nucleus and the cytosol. Darkly stained ANX6-immunoreactive glia, with the morphology characteristic of astrocytes, were abundant in the hippocampus, substantia nigra reticulata, and cerebellum. Lactococcus lactis MBP71 ΔthyA (thymidylate synthase) cannot synthesize dTTP de novo, and DNA replication is dependent on thymidine in the growth medium. In the nonreplicating state acidification by MBP71 was completely insensitive to bacteriophages (M. B. Pedersen, P. R. Jensen, T. Janzen, and D. Nilsson, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 68:3010-3023, 2002). For nonreplicating MBP71 the biomass increased 3.3-fold over the first 3.5 h, and then the increase stopped. The rate of acidification increased 2.3-fold and then started to decrease. Shortly after inoculation the lactic acid flux was 60% of that of exponentially growing MBP71. However, when nonspecific ATPase activity was incorporated into MBP71, the lactic acid flux was restored to 100% but not above that point, indicating that control over the flux switched from ATP demand to ATP supply (i.e., to sugar transport and glycolysis). As determined by growing nonreplicating cells with high ATPase activity on various sugar sources, it appeared that glycolysis exerted the majority of the control. ATPase activity also stimulated the rate of acidification by nonreplicating MBP71 growing in milk, and pH 5.2 was reached 40% faster than it was without ATPase activity. We concluded that ATPase activity is a functional means of increasing acidification by nonreplicating L. lactis. 相似文献
