Climatic determinants of diet and foraging behaviour in baboons   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Baboons (Papio spp.) are characterised by a large degree of variation in foraging behaviour and dietary composition. Previous analyses have suggested that much of this can be traced to differences in ecological conditions between sites. The proximate mechanism underlying these relationships is assumed to be mediated via the impact of climatic conditions on food availability, and ultimately the impact that this has on dietary composition. This paper examines these relationships more explicitly. Data from 15 baboon populations were used to assess the relationship between foraging variables and dietary composition. Only feeding time showed significant relationships with dietary composition, with percentage of time spent feeding decreasing with proportion of fruit in the diet, and increasing with the proportion of subterranean items. No relationships were found between diet composition and moving time or day journey length, although significant relationships were found between these variables and group size. The proportions of feeding time spent feeding on fruit, subterranean items and leaves were functions of the ecological conditions experienced by that population, although no relationships were found for the percentage of feeding time devoted to flowers or animal material. The relationships between the proportion feeding time spent on fruits, leaves and subterranean items and ecological variables could be best explained through understanding the way in which bush and tree level vegetation respond to the climatic environment and the impact this has on fruit availability. In this respect, temperature and seasonality are the key climatic parameters. This provides good support for the idea that the proximate mechanism underlying the relationship between foraging time and ecological variables is mediated via the impact of the climatic environment on vegetation structure and food availability. Similar factors have been proposed to explain much of the geographic variation in species diversity, suggesting that these relationships have far wider relevance and may account for much of the observed geographical variation in mammalian behaviour.  相似文献

Flexibility (varying from monogamy in South Africa to polygyny in East Africa) has been documented in the mating system of the oribi ( Ourebia ourebi ) by several authors. To investigate this, a population was studied in Northern KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). The adult sex ratio was one male to 1.38 females and the mean group size was 2.1 (n = 13). Although monogamous and polygynous groups occurred in the study population, the polygynous groups were unstable and depended on seasonal food abundance. Comparison of oribi populations across Africa suggests that variation in the mating system is determined mainly by predation risk and altitude (most likely through its effect on graze quality). In areas of high predation risk, oribi can survive only when resource quality permits females to forage in groups, thereby allowing males to be polygynous.  相似文献

Comparative analyses are the backbone of evolutionary analysis. However, their record in producing a consensus has not always been good. This is especially true of attempts to understand the factors responsible for the evolution of large brains, which have been embroiled in an increasingly polarised debate over the past three decades. We argue that most of these disputes arise from a number of conceptual errors and associated logical fallacies that are the result of a failure to adopt a biological systems-based approach to hypothesis-testing. We identify four principal classes of error: a failure to heed Tinbergen's Four Questions when testing biological hypotheses, misapplying Dobzhansky's Dictum when testing hypotheses of evolutionary adaptation, poorly chosen behavioural proxies for underlying hypotheses, and the use of inappropriate statistical methods. In the interests of progress, we urge a more careful and considered approach to comparative analyses, and the adoption of a broader, rather than a narrower, taxonomic perspective.  相似文献

Most primates are intensely social and spend a large amount of time servicing social relationships. In this study, we use social network analysis to examine the relationship between primate group size, total brain size, neocortex ratio and several social network metrics concerned with network cohesion. Using female grooming networks from a number of Old World monkey species, we found that neocortex size was a better predictor of network characteristics than endocranial volumes. We further found that when we controlled for group size, neocortex ratio was negatively correlated with network density, connectivity, relative clan size and proportional clan membership, while there was no effect of neocortex ratio on change in connectivity following the removal of the most central female in the network. Thus, in species with larger neocortex ratios, females generally live in more fragmented networks, belong to smaller grooming clans and are members of relatively fewer clans despite living in a closely bonded group. However, even though groups are more fragmented to begin with among species with larger neocortices, the removal of the most central individual does cause groups to fall apart, suggesting that social complexity may ultimately involve the management of highly fragmented social groups while at the same time maintaining overall social cohesion. These results emphasize a need for more detailed brain data on a wider sample of primate species.  相似文献

A comparison of glycoproteins of the zona pellucida (ZP) of five different mammalian species (cat, dog, rabbit, pig, and rat) has been made using polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. In an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), polyclonal antisera against total rabbit and pig ZP recognize their homologous ZP to the greatest extent but also detect crossreactive antigenic determinants in the ZP of all other species tested. Polyclonal antibodies against each of two purified rabbit ZP glycoproteins or one purified pig ZP glycoprotein also show some recognition of heterologous (pig, cat, and dog) ZP, but not rat ZP. Monoclonal antibodies (McR5-rabbit ZP protein determinant; McPSI-determinant associated with post-translational modifications of pig ZP proteins such as carbohydrates) further demonstrate that specific determinants are shared between some but not all of these mammalian species. For example, both of these antibodies recognize distinct determinants which are most abundant in pig and cat ZP. However, McR5 recognizes a determinant on all species of ZP except the rat, while McPSI does not recognize either the rabbit or rat ZP. Collectively, these studies suggest that the molecules of the pig, dog, and cat ZP are more closely related to each other than to those of the rabbit ZP, while there is little similarity with rat ZP molecules. Immunoblot analysis of ZP glycoproteins separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to identify antigenic relationships among four different species. We studied glucagon and insulin binding to isolated hepatocyte receptors in Wistar-Furth (WF) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, using 125I-labeled hormones. Hepatocytes from WF rats bound more glucagon than hepatocytes from SD rats. There were no differences in insulin binding. These observations prompted us to investigate other strain differences. Fasting and nonfasting serum glucose, glucagon, insulin, and growth hormone were measured. WF animals had a lower fasting glucose and higher fasting glucagon than SD animals, while SD rats had higher nonfasting insulin levels and a higher hepatic glycogen content. Total hepatic glucose production in response to glucagon (10(-8) M) was greater in WF than in SD rats, while glucagon-stimulated gluconeogenesis from alanine was the same in the two groups of animals. We concluded that the decreased glucagon binding does not play a significant role in the maintenance of serum glucose or in the gluconeogenetic response glucagon, and that neither these responses nor the serum glucagon levels appears to be correlated with the number of glucagon receptors. We conclude further that different animal strains of the same species may differ in their biologic responses.  相似文献

Angiotensin II (AngII) receptors have been localized in rat kidney by using the high-affinity agonist analog 125I-labeled [Sar1]AngII as a probe for in vitro autoradiography. Receptors were associated with four morphologically distinct patterns of distribution. First, a high density of receptors occurs in glomeruli. These are diffusely distributed, consistent with a mesangial localization. AngII receptor density shows a cortical gradient, which is highest in superficial and midcortical glomeruli and lowest in juxtamedullary glomeruli. Receptors associated with both superficial and deep glomeruli show down-regulation during low-sodium intake. Second, low levels of tubular AngII binding were seen in the outer cortex. Third, a very high density of AngII receptors occurs in longitudinal bands in the inner zone of the outer medulla in association with vasa recta bundles. Receptors in this site also show down-regulation during low dietary sodium intake. Fourth, a moderate density of receptors occurs diffusely throughout the inner zone of the outer medulla in the interbundle areas. These results suggest that AngII exerts a number of different intrarenal regulatory actions. In addition to the known vascular, glomerular, and proximal tubular effects of AngII, these findings focus attention on possible actions of AngII in the renal medulla where it could regulate medullary blood flow and thereby modify the function of the countercurrent concentrating system.  相似文献

Aim:  To determine the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes and associated risk factors among beef operations (cow-calf and feedlot) in central and southern California.
Methods and Results:  A repeated cross-sectional study where faecal and environmental samples were collected from 50 operations three times a year at different seasons was carried out. Samples were tested for presence of L. monocytogenes using a combination of enrichment and polymerase chain reaction tests. Data on putative risk factors were also collected. Listeria monocytogenes was detected in faecal samples from cows, calves and other animals on calf-cow operations at proportions of 3·1%, 3·75% and 2·5%, respectively. The organism was detected in 5·3% of cut-grass, 5·3% of soil, 14·3% of irrigation ditches, 3·1% of the ponds and 6·5% of water troughs samples. Listeria monocytogenes was less common in faecal (0·3%) and soil (0·75%) samples collected from feedlots.
Conclusions:  Listeria monocytogenes was present at a higher proportion among cow-calf operations than feedlots. There was no significant seasonal variation in the occurrence of this pathogen within the two types of operations.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  If risk mitigation strategies were implemented to reduce the public health risk these should focus in cow-calf operations.  相似文献

Filamentous phage such as M13 and fd consist of a circular, single-stranded DNA molecule surrounded by several different coat proteins. These phages have been used extensively as vectors in phage display where one of the phage coat proteins is genetically engineered to contain a unique peptide surface loop. Through these peptide sequences, a phage collection can be screened for individual phage that binds to different macromolecules or small organic and inorganic molecules. Here, we use computer-controlled bioreactors to produce large quantities of filamentous phage in the bacterial host Escherichia coli. By measuring phage yield and bacterial growth while changing the growth medium, pH and dissolved oxygen concentration, we found that the optimal conditions for phage yield were NZY medium with pH maintained at 7.4, the dO2 held at 100% and agitation at 800 rpm. These computer-controlled fermentations result in a minimum of a tenfold higher filamentous phage production compared to standard shake flask conditions.  相似文献
