The effect of a homologue series of nonionic surfactants, namely poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) fatty acid esters, differing
in oxyethylene (PEG 8, PEG 12, and PEG 40) and fatty acid (stearate, mono and di-laurate, and mono and di-oleate) chain lengths,
on in vitro skin permeability of ketoprofen (KTP) vehicled in plasters was investigated. The drug diffusion through hairless mouse skin
as well as the effect of the surfactant type and strength was studied by Franz diffusion cells and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.
The use of PEG stearate series revealed that the surfactant with the largest polar head, namely PEG 40, was ineffective in
enhancing the skin permeation of KTP, independently of the plaster concentrations. The effect of the hydrophobic chain was
investigated only by using the shortest oxyethylene chains. The experimental results revealed that the oxyethylene chain length
of surfactants appeared to be more influent than the alkyl chain. The prediction of the absorption enhancing capability of
these PEG derivatives appeared related to the vehicle other than the proper combination of the number of ethylene oxide groups

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened tropical forests in the world, being drastically reduced, fragmented, and disturbed. The drastic process of anthropic occupation and exploitation of this biome has, in many cases, led to the introduction of exotic species, such as the jackfruits (Artocarpus heterophyllus). However, studies on the influence of jackfruits on the native biota are still scarce. Here we investigated the influence of fruit trees on the seed rain and early recruitment of seedlings in native remnants, comparing these patterns with those observed for a native species tapirira (Tapirira guianensis), which similarly to jackfruits, produces many fruits throughout the year, attracting a variety of frugivore species. Seed rain and seedlings observed under the jackfruits were both more abundant and equally rich to the assemblages reported under the native tapirira trees. In both species, co-specifics comprise a large part of the number of seeds (>?70%) and seedlings (>?45%) individuals and, although they attract similar seed assemblages, seedling composition diverge, particularly when co-specifics are excluded. We reported that jackfruits can attract a diverse seed and seedling assemblages, and we find no evidence that the presence of jackfruits negatively affects the arrival and initial recruitment of native plant species in the study area. These results should be analyzed with caution but considered when evaluating costs and benefits of management options to control exotic species.
Tyrosinemia type II, also known as Richner–Hanhart syndrome, is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism caused by a deficiency of hepatic cytosolic tyrosine aminotransferase, and is associated with neurologic and development difficulties in numerous patients. Considering that the mechanisms underlying the neurological dysfunction in hypertyrosinemic patients are poorly known and that studies demonstrated that high concentrations of tyrosine provoke oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo in the cerebral cortex of rats, in the present study we investigate the oxidative stress parameters (enzymatic antioxidant defenses, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and protein carbonyl content) in cerebellum, hippocampus and striatum of 30-old-day rats after acute administration of l-tyrosine. Our results demonstrated that the acute administration of l-tyrosine increased the thiobarbituric acid reactive species levels in hippocampus and the carbonyl levels in cerebellum, hippocampus and striatum. In addition, acute administration of l-tyrosine significantly decreased superoxide dismutase activity in cerebellum, hippocampus and striatum, while catalase was increased in striatum. In conclusion, the oxidative stress may contribute, along with other mechanisms, to the neurological dysfunction characteristic of hypertyrosinemia and the administration of antioxidants may be considered as a potential adjuvant therapy for tyrosinemia, especially type II. 相似文献
Infection with multiple types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the main risk factors associated with the development of cervical lesions. In this study, cervical samples collected from 1,810 women with diverse sociocultural backgrounds, who attended to their cervical screening program in different geographical regions of Colombia, were examined for the presence of cervical lesions and HPV by Papanicolau testing and DNA PCR detection, respectively.
Principal Findings
The negative binomial distribution model used in this study showed differences between the observed and expected values within some risk factor categories analyzed. Particularly in the case of single infection and coinfection with more than 4 HPV types, observed frequencies were smaller than expected, while the number of women infected with 2 to 4 viral types were higher than expected. Data analysis according to a negative binomial regression showed an increase in the risk of acquiring more HPV types in women who were of indigenous ethnicity (+37.8%), while this risk decreased in women who had given birth more than 4 times (−31.1%), or were of mestizo (−24.6%) or black (−40.9%) ethnicity.
Conclusions
According to a theoretical probability distribution, the observed number of women having either a single infection or more than 4 viral types was smaller than expected, while for those infected with 2–4 HPV types it was larger than expected. Taking into account that this study showed a higher HPV coinfection rate in the indigenous ethnicity, the role of underlying factors should be assessed in detail in future studies. 相似文献
The efficacy of Fe3+ complexes of polyethers with 8-quinolinol (8QOH) chelating groups attached to the polymer chain at different positions of
the aromatic ring or having different chain length for remedying the iron-deficient maize plants was evaluated. The efficacy
of chelates of polymers having terminal 8QOH residues was compared with that of complexes of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid,
8QOH, mixtures of commercial polyethers with isopropylamino end-groups and 8QOH or FeCl3.6H2O. It was found that at 30/25 °C (day/night) and photosynthetic photon flux density 1100–1300 μmol m−2 s−1, the chlorotic maize plants recovered for 4 days of iron re-supply. An increase in the fresh and dry weight, leaf area, net
photosynthetic CO2 uptake of maize leaves, leaf pigment composition and chlorophyll fluorescence was more pronounced in the plants supplied
with Fe3+ chelates of polymers bearing 8QOH groups attached at 5-position, compared to the other tested Fe3+complexes. The importance of the stability of Fe3+ complexes, structure of the chelating agent and the necessity of effective ligand exchange between synthetic chelators and
free phytosiderophore in iron uptake by strategy II plants was discussed.

3 wild-type strains of E. coli, namely K12 AB2497, B/r WP2 and 15 555-7v proficient in excision and post-replication repair, differ markedly in their UV resistance. To elucidate this difference, the influence was investigated of induction by application of inducing fluence (IF) before lethal fluence (LF) on repair processes after LF. In cells distinguished by low UV resistance (E. coli 15 555-7; E. coli B/r WP2), dimer excision was less complete in cultures irradiated with IF + LF than in cultures irradiated with LF only. The highly resistant E. coli K12 AB2497 performed complete excision both after IF + LF or after LF alone. All 3 types of cell survived better after IF + LF than after LF only. Because, in most strains so far investigated, the application of IF reduced dimer excision and increased survival, dimer excision per se does not appear important for survival.We conclude that the rate and completeness of dimer excision can serve as a measure of efficiency of the excision system whose action is necessary for repair of another lesion. Cells of all investigated strains could not resume DNA replication and died progressively when irradiated with LF and post-incubated with chloramphenicol (LF CAP+). Thus, it appears that inducible proteins are necessary for repair in all wild-type E. coli cells give with potentially lethal doses of UV irradiation. 相似文献
Status epilepticus (SE) is a severe clinical manifestation of epilepsy associated with intense neuronal loss and inflammation, two key factors involved in the pathophysiology of temporal lobe epilepsy. Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMC) attenuated the consequences of pilocarpine-induced SE, including neuronal loss, in addition to frequency and duration of seizures. Here we investigated the effects of BMMC transplanted early after the onset of SE in mice, as well as the involvement of soluble factors produced by BMMC in the effects of the cell therapy. Mice were injected with pilocarpine for SE induction and randomized into three groups: transplanted intravenously with 1 × 107 BMMC isolated from GFP transgenic mice, injected with BMMC lysate, and saline-treated controls. Cell tracking, neuronal counting in hippocampal subfields and cytokine analysis in the serum and brain were performed. BMMC were found in the brain 4 h following transplantation and their numbers progressively decreased until 24 h following transplantation. A reduction in hippocampal neuronal loss after SE was found in mice treated with live BMMC and BMMC lysate when compared to saline-treated, SE-induced mice. Moreover, the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 was decreased after injection of live BMMC and to a lesser extent, of BMMC lysate, when compared to SE-induced controls. In contrast, IL-10 expression was increased. Analysis of markers for microglia activation demonstrated a reduction of the expression of genes related to type 1-activation. BMMC transplantation promotes neuroprotection and mediates anti-inflammatory effects following SE in mice, possibly through the secretion of soluble factors. 相似文献
The conditions under which Coenzyme Q (CoQ) may protect platelet mitochondrial function of transfusional buffy coats from aging and from induced oxidative stress were investigated. The Pasteur effect, i.e. the enhancement of lactate production after inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory chain, was exploited as a marker of mitochondrial function as it allows to calculate the ratio of mitochondrial ATP to glycolytic ATP. Reduced CoQ 10 improves platelet mitochondrial function of transfusional buffy coats and protects the cells from induced oxidative stress. Oxidized CoQ is usually less effective, despite the presence, shown for the first time in this study, of quinone reductase activities in the platelet plasma membranes. The addition of a CoQ reducing system to platelets is effective in enhancing the protection of platelet mitochondrial function from the oxidative stress. The results support on one hand a possibility of protection of mitochondrial function in aging by exogenous CoQ intake, on the other a possible application in protection of transfusional buffy coats from storage conditions and oxidative deterioration. 相似文献
