Plant essential oils are potential sources of insecticidal compounds, but have rarely been explored for their effect on termites. In the present study, we assessed the chemical composition of essential oils of Lippia sidoides Cham. (pepper‐rosmarin; Verbenaceae) and Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. (patchouli; Lamiacaeae) and evaluated their toxicity, behavioral impairment, and repellence to termite species of the genera Amitermes and Microcerotermes (Isoptera: Termitidae: Termitinae). The main components of essential oils of L. sidoides and P. cablin were thymol (44.6%) and patchouli alcohol (36.6%), respectively. The essential oil of P. cablin was most potent against Amitermes cf. amifer Silvestri and had the lowest LD50 (0.63 μg mg?1). There was no difference in toxicity for Microcerotermes indistinctus Mathews between the essential oils of L. sidoides (LD50 = 1.49 μg mg?1) and P. cablin (LD50 = 1.67 μg mg?1). Pogostemon cablin essential oil was the most toxic to M. indistinctus (LC50 = 0.32 μl ml?1) and A. cf. amifer (LC50 = 0.29 μl ml?1). The essential oils analyzed exhibited high toxicity and repellence to the termites, in addition to reducing behavioral interactions among individuals, thus constituting potential termiticides. 相似文献
We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of whole-body vibration on physiologic and functional measurements in children with cerebral palsy.
Design and methods:
We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, EMBASE, Scielo, CINAHL (from the earliest date available to November 2014) for randomized controlled trials, that aimed to investigate the effects of whole-body vibration versus exercise and/or versus control on physiologic and functional measurements in children with cerebral palsy. Two reviewers independently selected the studies. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.
Results:
Six studies with 176 patients comparing whole-body vibration to exercise and/or control were included. Whole-body vibration resulted in improvement in: gait speed WMDs (0.13 95% CI:0.05 to 0.20); gross motor function dimension E WMDs (2.97 95% CI:0.07 to 5.86) and femur bone density (1.32 95% CI:0.28 to 2.36). The meta-analysis also showed a nonsignificant difference in muscle strength and gross motor function dimension D for participants in the whole-body vibration compared with control group. No serious adverse events were reported.
Conclusions:
Whole-body vibration may improve gait speed and standing function in children with cerebral palsy and could be considered for inclusion in rehabilitation programs. 相似文献

The stress hormones abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) play an important role in the regulation of physiological processes and are often used in tissue culture to promote somatic embryogenesis and to enhance the quality of somatic embryos. Despite many studies on Brassica napus microspore culture, the effects of stress hormones (ABA, JA and SA) on microspore embryogenesis are not well explored. In this study, the effects of three incubation periods (6, 12 and 24 h) at different levels of ABA, JA and SA (0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 mg l?1) on microspore embryogenesis of rapeseed (B. napus L.) cv. ‘Regent’ were investigated. ABA (0.5 mg l?1 for 12 h) enhanced microspore embryogenesis by about threefold compared with untreated cultures and increased normal plantlet regeneration by 68 %. ABA treatment also effectively reduced secondary embryo formation at all concentrations tested but enhanced callusing at high levels, for example 67 % at 1.0 mg l?1 for 24 h. Highest embryo yield (286.0 embryos Petri dish?1) was achieved using 1.0 mg l?1 JA for 24 h and highest normal plantlet regeneration (54 %) was observed in cultures exposed to 0.5 mg l?1 JA for 12 h. JA (5.0 mg l?1 for 24 h) also reduced the germination of microspore-derived embryos on regeneration medium by 21 %. SA at 0.2 and 0.5 mg l?1 for 6 h increased microspore embryogenesis (184.0 and 193.4 embryos Petri dish?1) relative to the control (136.2 embryos Petri dish?1). However, SA did not improve normal regeneration, secondary embryo formation or callusing. Microspore embryogenesis and plant regeneration could be improved by ABA, JA as well as SA when the appropriate level and duration of incubation were selected. 相似文献
Brazil is one of the most important endemic areas for leishmaniasis worldwide. Protected areas that are tourist attractions likely present an important risk of transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Furthermore, with the geographical expansion of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), several studies have recorded the occurrence of its vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis, and cases of human and canine VL in such tourist areas. The Parque Estadual do Sumidouro is an environmentally protected area located in the Brazilian Cerrado biome and in an important area endemic for leishmaniasis in the state of Minas Gerais. The purpose of this study was to monitor the sand fly fauna in areas of tourist activity in the park. Sampling was performed every month, from September 2011 to August 2013, using CDC light traps at six sites of differing environmental characteristics. Sampled specimens were identified following Galati (2003), and females were submitted to molecular techniques for the detection and identification of Leishmania DNA. A total of 4,675 sand fly specimens of 25 species belonging to nine genera were collected. The most abundant species were Micropygomyia quinquefer, Lutzomyia renei and Pintomyia pessoai, although only Pi. pessoai is implicated in the transmission of Leishmania braziliensis. The species accumulation curve reached saturation on the 16th sampling event. Species richness, diversity and evenness differed among the sampled areas. The seasonal curve was not determined by a single unique species, and no single species was the most abundant in all environments sampled. The main vector of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, Lutzomyia longipalpis, accounted for only 5.35% of the specimens collected. Proven or suspected vectors of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis were recorded, and one female of the cortellezzii complex tested positive for Le. braziliensis DNA. Even with a low infection rate (0.62%), these data indicate the circulation of the parasite and reinforce the need for entomological and epidemiological surveillance in the park and its surroundings. 相似文献
Full-length dengue virus (DENV) cDNA clones are an invaluable tool for many studies,
including those on the development of attenuated or chimeric vaccines and on
host-virus interactions. Furthermore, the importance of low passage DENV infectious
clones should be highlighted, as these may harbour critical and unique
strain-specific viral components from field-circulating isolates. The successful
construction of a functional Brazilian low passage DENV serotype 2 full-length clone
through homologous recombination reported here supports the use of a strategy that
has been shown to be highly useful by our group for the development of flavivirus
infectious clones and replicons. 相似文献

The stingrays Potamotrygon amandae and Potamotrygon falkneri are nonnative species established in the Upper Paraná basin. Although they are widely distributed, few studies on their diets or respective metabolic responses exist. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the dietary composition, trophic niche breadth and lipid/protein concentrations in muscle and hepatic tissues of these two species, as well as the interrelationships between them. The individuals were collected in two areas on the Upper Paraná River. The stomachs and samples of muscle and liver tissues were taken for analysis. A broad dietary spectrum was observed for both species, along with differences in dietary composition, with a higher consumption of detritus by P. amandae and Baetidae by P. falkneri. No differences were observed in the trophic niche breadth. Regarding the metabolic variables, differences were only found in the hepatic protein, with a higher content observed in P. falkneri. A significant positive correlation was observed between items of animal origin and detritus with muscle protein for this species. This shows that such feeding habits, which are characteristic of a generalist, influenced the metabolism of the species and possibly contributed to the successful adjustment of the species to new habitats in the Upper Paraná River.
Gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) is commonly used in llamas to induce ovulation; however, the consequence of reduced doses of GnRH on luteinizing hormone (LH) release, ovulatory response, and subsequent corpus luteum (CL) development and function have apparently not been investigated. Hence, we examined the effect of gradual reduction of gonadorelin acetate (GnRH) dosage on pituitary LH release, ovulatory response, CL development, and plasma progesterone concentrations in llamas. Non-pregnant, non-lactating adult llamas were examined once daily by transrectal ultrasonography, and those with a follicle ≥8 mm in diameter that had grown for three consecutive days were randomly assigned to receive 50 (GnRH50, n = 23), 25 (GnRH25, n = 29), 12.5 (GnRH12.5, n = 29), or 6.25 μg (GnRH6.25, n = 29) of GnRH, or 0.5 mL of PBS (Control group, n = 16) im. In a subset (7 or 8 animals/group), intense blood sampling was done to measure LH concentrations. All females were examined by ultrasonography every 12 h from treatment (Day 0) to Day 2 to determinate ovulation, and thereafter on alternate days until Day 16 to evaluate CL development (9-13 animals/group). Also, blood samples for progesterone determination were taken (9 or 10 animals/group) on alternate days from Days 0-16. Ovulatory response (%) was highest (P < 0.05) in the GnRH50 (82.6), intermediate in the GnRH25 (72.3) and GnRH12.5 (75.9) groups, and lowest in the GnRH6.25 group (48.3). No ovulations were detected in the Control group. Mean peak LH concentrations (ng/mL) were highest (P < 0.05) for GnRH50 (6.2), intermediate for GnRH25 (4.4) and GnRH12.5 (2.9), and lowest for GnRH6.25 (2.2) groups. In addition, based on regression analysis, llamas with an LH peak <4 ng/mL were less likely to ovulate. Llamas given 50 μg of GnRH released more (P < 0.05) pituitary LH and had an LH surge of longer duration than those given 25, 12.5, or 6.25 μg. However, in those that ovulated, neither GnRH treatment nor treatment by time interaction affected (P > 0.05) CL diameter or plasma progesterone concentrations. In summary, reducing the dose of GnRH gradually decreased the magnitude of the preovulatory LH surge and ovulatory response; however, subsequent CL development and plasma progesterone concentrations were not affected. 相似文献
