Aflatoxin contamination of rice in the United Arab Emirates

Many people in the United Arab Emirates store rice in large quantities for long periods of time before use. Five hundred samples of rice were collected from households in Al-Ain city during the summers of 1992-1994. Aflatoxin B₁ was detected in 160 samples (64%) of long grain rice and 81 Samples (32%) of short grain rice at levels ranging from 1.2 to 16.5 μg/kg. The moisture content of samples varied between 5.7% and 15.3%. Species ofAspergillus andPenicillium (includingA. flavus andA. parasiticus) were isolated from discoloured, broken and insect damaged grain and it was confirmed that at least two of the isolates ofA. flavus were aflatoxigenic. These findings demonstrate that rice may contribute to dietary exposure to aflatoxins which are known to be carcinogenic and immunosuppressive.     

Relationship between body heat content and finger temperature during cold exposure.

The purpose of the present experiment was to examine the relationship between rate of body heat storage (S), change in body heat content (DeltaH(b)), extremity temperatures, and finger dexterity. S, DeltaH(b), finger skin temperature (T(fing)), toe skin temperature, finger dexterity, and rectal temperature were measured during active torso heating while the subjects sat in a chair and were exposed to -25 degrees C air. S and DeltaH(b) were measured using partitional calorimetry, rather than thermometry, which was used in the majority of previous studies. Eight men were exposed to four conditions in which the clothing covering the body or the level of torso heating was modified. After 3 h, T(fing) was 34.9 +/- 0.4, 31.2 +/- 1.2, 18.3 +/- 3.1, and 12.1 +/- 0.5 degrees C for the four conditions, whereas finger dexterity decreased by 0, 0, 26, and 39%, respectively. In contrast to some past studies, extremity comfort can be maintained, despite S that is slightly negative. This study also found a direct linear relationship between DeltaH(b) and T(fing) and toe skin temperature at a negative DeltaH(b). In addition, DeltaH(b) was a better indicator of the relative changes in extremity temperatures and finger dexterity over time than S.     

Perforation of the Pharynx in the Newborn: A Condition Mimicking Esophageal Atresia

Three cases of perforation of the pharynx in the newborn are presented. This condition resembles esophageal atresia, in that: (a) the symptoms are identical; (b) in both conditions there is failure to pass a nasogastric tube; (c) opacification of the esophagus through a nasogastric tube gives x-ray pictures confusingly similar. Careful examination of the radiographs can differentiate the two conditions. Although the three patients presented were operated on, conservative treatment is probably adequate for this condition.     

Estimation of disk membrane lateral pressure and molecular area of rhodopsin by the measurement of its orientation at the nitrogen-water interface from an ellipsometric study

The internal lateral pressure of a bilayer has been estimated by numerous investigators. Most of these measurements were made by using the monolayer technique. In our approach, the disk membrane lateral pressure was estimated by assuming that this value is equal to the surface pressure necessary to maintain the transmembrane orientation of rhodopsin. The orientation of rhodopsin at the nitrogen-water interface was determined by using ellipsometry, which can measure the thickness of the film. By examining surface pressure and ellipsometric isotherms of intact and partially hydrolyzed rhodopsin, we have determined that a lateral pressure of 38 mN/m is necessary to give rhodopsin its natural transmembrane orientation and that surface pressures exceeding 45 mN/m lead to the formation of multilayers in the disk membrane film. At 38 mN/m, pure rhodopsin is found to have a molecular area of 2300 A2.     

Polymorphic microsatellite primers developed from DNA of the endangered Mekong giant catfish,Pangasianodon gigas (Chevey) and cross‐species amplification in three species of Pangasius

The critically endangered Pangasianodon gigas is endemic to the Mekong River. Despite its importance, little is known about its genetic diversity and conservation efforts are hampered. Ten polymorphic dinucleotide microsatellite primer pairs were developed from DNA of P. gigas. The analysis of 20 individuals from hatchery stocks using these primers resulted in two to six alleles/locus; H_O = 0.05–0.95; H_E = 0.05–0.81. All but one locus (Pg‐3) conformed to Hardy–Weinberg expectation. Eight, six and seven primer pairs were amplified with the DNA from Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Pangasius larnaudii and Pangasius sanitwongsei, respectively. These markers will be useful for genetic monitoring of wild and hatchery stocks of these pangasiids.     

小叶臭黄皮叶挥发油化学成分的研究

采用水蒸气蒸馏法提取小叶臭黄皮叶挥发油,运用毛细管气相色谱-质谱联用法对挥发油成分进行了分析,共分离出84个峰,鉴定了其中的66种成分,所鉴定成分占挥发油总量的94.52%.其主要化学成分为α-芹子烯(15.76%)、石竹烯(15.05%)、β-芹子烯(9.54%)、α-蒎烯(6.43%)和α-石竹烯(5.39%)等.     

Concepts and models of aging well

For a few years, the image associated with the ageing process has been more positive: expressions such as < successful aging >, < well aging > or < healthy aging > are more frequently used in relation to aging. However, there is still a lack of consensus on this appealing and challenging concept. Therefore, we present an overview of its definition, psychosocial determinants and conceptual models. We report that the meaning of the concept varies according to the cultural context (individualistic/relational societies), to the actors' perspectives (researcher/elderly) and according to the dominant approach (biomedical/holistic). Several models have also been identified: some are specific to a scientific domain and rely on a unique marker of well aging; others are multicriterion and embrace a broader field. Psychosocial factors are the most frequent determinants addressed by models. Among these factors, social and personal resources can be mobilized and learned, contrarily to the less modifiable personality traits. In summary, the < well aging > framework offers a unique opportunity to identify and to reinforce positive aspects in the aging process. However, the integration of the various models, more complementary than opposite, into only one meta-model remains a task to be done by researchers for a better effectiveness of < well aging > promotion programs.

垂体瘤转化基因（PTTG1）在很多肿瘤中呈高水平表达.越来越多的研究表明,PTTG1与细胞增殖、细胞转化有关.但PTTG1在凋亡中的作用仍不清楚.通过在细胞中下调和过表达PTTG1,观察PTTG1在UV照射诱导凋亡中的作用.结果发现, RNAi-介导下调HeLa细胞PTTG1表达可增加对UV诱导凋亡的敏感性,而过表达PTTG1则降低对UV诱导凋亡的敏感性.此外,UV照射能降低PTTG1蛋白的表达水平,并且表现为明显的剂量和时间关系.这些研究结果显示,PTTG1在UV照射诱导的凋亡中发挥重要的抗凋亡作用.这为研究PTTG1在肿瘤发生、发展中的作用机制提供了新的实验证据.
