Summary Consecutive sections of certain neurons in the central ganglia of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis appear to be immunoreactive to anti-dopamine and anti-serotonin. The Cerebral Giant Neurons stain in addition with antivasotocin. Summary The medullary pyramid of renculi in kidneys of ringed seals (Phoca hispida) is enclosed by a basket composed of ribbons of stromal tissue continuous with the wall of the calyx. Branched smooth muscle cells with well-developed Golgi complexes and rough endoplasmic reticulum and only an incomplete external lamina are the principal cells in sites near the origin of the ribbons from the calycal wall. Deeper in the corticomedullary junctional region, smooth muscle is progressively replaced with stellate or spindle-shaped cells exhibiting structural characteristics intermediate between those of fibroblasts and smooth muscle fibers. These myofibroblast-like cells contain arrays of parallel microfilaments 6–8 nm thick with associated focal densities and subplasmalemmal dense plaques, caveolae, elongate, often deeply wrinkled nuclei, and well-developed Golgi complexes and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Material resembling external lamina is associated with parts of the surfaces of most myofibroblast-like cells and intermediate junctions are present. Fibroblasts lacking arrays of parallel microfilaments are a minority at any level in the stromal ribbons. Interstitial cells in the vicinity of the corticomedullary junction show similar myofibroblast-like characteristics. The smooth muscle and myofibroblast-like cells presumably assist expression of urine from the papilla and calyx, and possibly participate as pacemakers for the urinary tract.  相似文献

Several hundred proteins have been resolved on two-dimensional gels of extracts of [35S]methionine-labeled adult Drosophila melanogaster. 27 of these polypeptides disappear from the gel pattern after feeding the K+ ionophore nonactin. These proteins have been identified as mitochondrial, since the two-dimensional gel pattern of extracts of isolated mitochondria correlates well with the pattern of the proteins missing from that of nonactin-treated flies. Nine new proteins also appear on the two-dimensional gels of the extracts from the nonactin-treated flies. Apparently, these nine proteins are precursors of the mature mitochondrial forms. These particular data support the concept that processing of many of the cytoplasmically synthesized mitochondrial proteins requires a specific membrane potential, and that some of these proteins are modified intramitochondrially. However, using [35S]methionine incorporation techniques, not all labeled polypeptides disappear from mitochondria during such treatment. Feeding similarly radiolabeled flies with chloramphenicol, an inhibitor of mitochondrial protein synthesis, results in the disappearance of only one protein from the gel pattern with the concurrent appearance of a ‘new’ high-molecular-weight polypeptide. Collectively, these data show that a specific group of [35S]methionine-labeled mitochondrial proteins can be identified by selective inhibition of mitochondrial function in whole cell protein maps of adult D. melanogaster.  相似文献

Summary Electron microscopic studies of peripheral nerves and spinal cord white matter of adult mice, as prepared by the freeze-etching method, show distinct differences in the periodicity of the myelin lamellae as well as of the ultrastructural lamellar pattern. A periodicity of 185 Å is to be determined for peripheral myelin whereas it is 160 Å in the myelin of central origin.In contrast to the appearance in the peripheral myelin the lamellar structure in the central myelin sheath is less pronounced and tends towards a fundamental repeating unit of 80 Å.This work was supported by the Swiss National Foundation (Nr. 4065).  相似文献

Soil inhabiting pests and rot of feeding roots of sugar beet depending on rotation - Results of a long-term trial Over a period of 17 years a trial was carried out with sugar beet, cereals and oilseed rape in different crop rotations on a field near Göttingen (Lower Saxony). The frequency of sugar beet in the rotation was 17, 25, 33 and 67 %. In absence of beet nematodes, root and sugar yield of the beet decreased after repeated growing of sugar beet in short rotations compared to variants with long rotations. Sugar content and beet quality were only slightly influenced. By applying a bioassay (BW-Test) with young beet plants in the greenhouse it was shown that increasing infections on the tips of rootlets of the beet plants were the cause for decreasing beet yield in close rotations. Mortality of young beet plants and progress of infection in the test indicated roughly the quantity of pathogenic fungi in the soil. In the roots of the bait platits the parasitic fungus Aphanomyces cochlioides predominated. Rate of infection and yield reduction in the field were decisively influenced by weather conditions. Differences in yield between sugar beet grown in a three-year and a four-year rotation, however, were not significant. An occurrence of beet pests depending on crop rotation was stated only for Atomaria linearis and this only in a few years.  相似文献

Pheasants are competent reservoir hosts for the Lyme disease spirochaete, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., and carry large, but highly over-dispersed, infestations of the vector ticks, Ixodes ricinus . The effects of experimental reduction of tick infestation levels on the survival and territorial behaviour of male pheasants were studied. Over three years in two woodlands in southern England, birds were marked individually and half were fitted with a slow-release acaricide, which substantially reduced their tick burdens from March to August. Acaricide treatment affected reproductive success but had no discernible impact on the survival rates of male pheasants. The degree of wattle inflation by males, an indicator of territorial status and a correlate of harem acquisition, was significantly greater among treated males. In each year, a significantly higher proportion of treated (overall 44%) than control (22%) males acquired harems. Males that acquired females ranged over small areas on field edges. By contrast, those with no females ranged more widely in woods and the adjoining fields, increasing their exposure to questing ticks. The relative contribution of such roving males to tick-borne pathogen transmission may thus increase.  相似文献
