Examination of thirteen petroliferous formations for hydrocarbon-utilizing sulfate-reducing microorganisms

Virgin cores and production fluids were obtained from seven wells, ranging in depth from 805 ft to 14 492 ft, and examined for the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) using Rosenfeld's sulfate-reducing medium modified by using crude oil in place of lactate. Cores from an additional six wells, ranging in depth from 1160 ft to 13 337 ft were tested for SRB using the modified Rosenfeld medium and API-sulfate-reducing medium. Produced waters from five of the six wells were tested also. All of the eleven produced water samples were positive for SRB while H₂S production was not detected from the core samples.     

Effects of elevated cytosolic calcium on ACh-induced swine tracheal smooth muscle contraction

Increased intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca²⁺]_i) is required for smooth muscle contraction. In tracheal and other tonic smooth muscles, contraction and elevated [Ca²⁺]_i are maintained as long as an agonist is present. To evaluate the physiological role of steady-state increases in Ca²⁺ on tension maintenance, [Ca²⁺]_i was elevated using ionomycin, a Ca²⁺ ionophore or charybdotoxin, a large-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel (K_Ca) blocker prior to or during exposure of tracheal smooth muscle strips to Ach (10^–9 to 10^–4 M). Ionomycin (5 µM) in resting muscles induced increases in [Ca²⁺]_i to 500±230 nM and small increases in force of 2.6±2.3 N/cm². This tension is only 10% of the maximal tension induced by ACh. Charybdotoxin had no effect on [Ca²⁺]_i or tension in resting muscle. After pretreatment of muscle with ionomycin, the concentration-response relationship for ACh-induced changes in tension shifted to the left (EC₅₀=0.07±0.05 µM ionomycin; 0.17±0.07 µM, control, p<0.05). When applied to the muscles during steady-state responses to submaximal concentrations of ACh, both ionomycin and charybdotoxin induced further increases in tension. The same magnitude increase in tension occurs after ionomycin and charybdotoxin treatment, even though the increase in [Ca²⁺]_i induced by charybdotoxin is much smaller than that induced by ionomycin. We conclude that the resting muscle is much less sensitive to elevation of [Ca²⁺]_i when compared to muscles stimulated with ACh. Steady-state [Ca²⁺]_i limits tension development induced by submaximal concentrations of ACh. The activity of K_Ca moderates the response of the muscle to ACh at concentrations less than 1 µM.     

Polymorphism in the Ostertagiinae Lopez-Neyra, 1947 and comments on the systematics of these nematodes

A list of 19 polymorphic species of the generaOstertagia, Orloffia, Teladorsagia, Marshallagia andSpiculopteragia is presented. The morphs of the polymorphic species in question have identical females and show similarities in some male features, e.g. the structure of the oesophagus, the synlophe and the shape of the rays of the copulatory bursa. However, they differ by characters which are recognised as generic features, e.g. the structure of spicules, gulbernaculum and genital cone. The presence or lack of minor morphs is a generic feature in the Ostertagiinae. Each polymorphic genus has a defined type of minor morph.     

Upper cretaceous rudist and stromatoporid associations of Central Oman (Arabian Peninsula)

Summary Rudist and stromatoporid associations of the Campanian from Central Oman are nearly monospecific. They are dominated byDurania aff.nicholasi, Vaccinites vesiculosus, Torreites milanovici or phaceloid and massive stromatoporids. Several other rudist genera play a secondary role. The thickness of the associations is rarely more than one metre. Solitary corals do not occur in the associations. Colonial corals are less common, although they are up to 1 m high and show considerable diversity. There are no binders. The reef structure indicates variable hydrodynamic conditions. They are always associated with very shallow water. The pureDurania aff.nicholasi patches with large colonial corals andTorreites milanovici are presumably the most rigid structures. The near monospecific associations ofVaccinites vesiculosus are widely distributed. Although mostly preserved in situ, strong currents, presumably caused by tropical storms, have repeatedly impaired and interrupted growth. The specific growth characteristics of the shell of some rudists, especially the radiolitids, enable an estimation of the individual lifespan. Frameworks of approximately 1 metre thickness probably developed in ±100 years. The sediments of the complete sections are predominantly bioclastic.     

Synthesis of some racemicγ-fluoro-α-amino acids

Summary Versatile three-step procedures for syntheses of seven racemi-fluoro-a-amino acids are described. Alkylation oftert-butyl N-(diphenylmethylene) glycinate with 1-bromo-2-fluoroalkanes gave N-protected aminoacid esters both in anhydrous medium using lithium-diisopropylamide as base at low temperature or in a two phase system of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide and methylene chloride with triethylbenzylammonium chloride as the phase transfer catalyst at room temperature. Subsequent two-step deprotection with citric acid and hydrochloric acid gave the title compounds in 13–33% overall yields.Dedicated to Professor Dr.mult., Dr.h.c. Amino acid studies in transient acute polymorphic psychosis

Summary Data are reviewed on the amino acid metabolism in patients suffering from transient acute polymorphic psychoses according to ICD-10. The psychotic episodes of many of these patients are characterized by distorted sensory perceptions and intense emotional states; plasma amino acid analysis revealed a disturbed serine-glycine metabolism.In remitted patients oral loading with serine induced the characteristic dysperceptions and psychedelic symptoms. Plasma concentrations of serine and methionine were decreased, and the concentration of taurine was increased. Fibroblast experiments suggest that the activities of the serine metabolizing enzymes serine hydroxymethyltransferase and cystathionine-synthase are increased in these patients.The determination of plasma amino acid concentrations proved to be useful in discriminating these patients. The prevalence of this transient psychosis in a psychiatric in-patient population ranged between 1.4 and 3.6%.     

Cutaneous zygomycosis caused byAbsidia corymbifera in a leukemic patient

A case of cutaneous zygomycosis caused byAbsidia coryabifera in a leukemic patient submitted to chemotherapy is reported. The lesion was located on the little finger of the right hand and probably resulted from a latent osteomyelitis. It progressed to form extensive necrotic area. No systemic infection was detected and the lesion did not appear to be associated with any trauma.
