Although human activity is considered to be a major driving force affecting the distribution and dynamics of Mediterranean ecosystems, the full consequences of projected climate variability and relative sea-level changes on fragile coastal ecosystems for the next century are still unknown. It is unclear how these waterfront ecosystems can be sustained, as well as the services they provide, when relative sea-level rise and global warming are expected to exert even greater pressures in the near future (drought, habitat degradation and accelerated shoreline retreat). Haifa Bay, northern Israel, has recorded a landward sea invasion, with a maximum sea penetration 4,000 years ago, during an important period of urban development and climate instability. Here, we examine the cumulative pressure of climate shifts and relative sea-level changes in order to investigate the patterns and mechanisms behind forest replacement by an open-steppe. We provide a first comprehensive and integrative study for the southern Levant that shows that (i) human impact, through urbanization, has been the main driver behind ecological erosion in the past 4,000 years; (ii) climate pressures have reinforced this impact; and (iii) local coastal changes have played a decisive role in eroding ecosystem resilience. These three parameters, which have closely interacted during the last 4,000 years in Haifa Bay, clearly indicate that for an efficient management of the coastal habitats, anthropogenic pressures linked to urban development must be reduced in order to mitigate the predicted effects of Global Change.  相似文献

Gymnosperms and angiosperms can co-occur within the same habitats but key plant traits are thought to give angiosperms an evolutionary competitive advantage in many ecological settings. We studied ontogenetic changes in competitive and facilitative interactions between a rare gymnosperm (Dioon sonorense, our target species) and different plant and abiotic neighbours (conspecific-cycads, heterospecific-angiosperms, or abiotic-rocks) from 2007 to 2010 in an arid environment of northwestern Mexico. We monitored survival and growth of seedlings, juveniles, and adults of the cycad Dioon sonorense to evaluate how cycad survival and relative height growth rate (RHGR) responded to intra- and interspecific competition, canopy openness, and nearest neighbour. We tested spatial associations among D. sonorense life stages and angiosperm species and measured ontogenetic shifts in cycad shade tolerance. Canopy openness decreased cycad survival while intraspecific competition decreased survival and RHGR during early ontogeny. Seedling survival was higher in association with rocks and heterospecific neighbours where intraspecific competition was lower. Shade tolerance decreased with cycad ontogeny reflecting the spatial association of advanced stages with more open canopies. Interspecific facilitation during early ontogeny of our target species may promote its persistence in spite of increasing interspecific competition in later stages. We provide empirical support to the long-standing assumption that marginal rocky habitats serve as refugia from angiosperm competition for slow-growing gymnosperms such as cycads. The lack of knowledge of plant–plant interactions in rare or endangered species may hinder developing efficient conservation strategies (e.g. managing for sustained canopy cover), especially under the ongoing land use and climatic changes.  相似文献

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer among women worldwide. Early detection of breast cancer has a critical role in improving the quality of life and survival of breast cancer patients. In this paper a new approach for the detection of breast cancer is described, based on tracking the mammary architectural elements using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The paper focuses on the scanning protocols and image processing algorithms and software that were designed to fit the diffusion properties of the mammary fibroglandular tissue and its changes during malignant transformation. The final output yields pixel by pixel vector maps that track the architecture of the entire mammary ductal glandular trees and parametric maps of the diffusion tensor coefficients and anisotropy indices. The efficiency of the method to detect breast cancer was tested by scanning women volunteers including 68 patients with breast cancer confirmed by histopathology findings. Regions with cancer cells exhibited a marked reduction in the diffusion coefficients and in the maximal anisotropy index as compared to the normal breast tissue, providing an intrinsic contrast for delineating the boundaries of malignant growth. Overall, the sensitivity of the DTI parameters to detect breast cancer was found to be high, particularly in dense breasts, and comparable to the current standard breast MRI method that requires injection of a contrast agent. Thus, this method offers a completely non-invasive, safe and sensitive tool for breast cancer detection.  相似文献

Summary The genes coding for isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS) in Streptomyces jumonjinensis and S. lipmanii were isolated from recombinant phage lambda libraries using the S. clavuligerus IPNS gene as a heterologous probe. The S. jumonjinensis IPNS gene has an open reading frame coding for 329 amino acids, identical in size to that of the previously cloned S. clavuligerus IPNS gene. A partial nucleotide sequence was also determined for the S. lipmanii IPNS gene. Comparison of the predicted amino acid sequences of all three streptomycete IPNS proteins shows that they exhibit more than 70% similarity, close to that found in comparisons among fungal IPNS proteins and significantly greater than that found, approximately 60%, between Streptomyces and fungal IPNS proteins. We conclude that procaryotic and eucaryotic IPNS genes are subgroups of a single family of microbial IPNS genes. Hybridization probes prepared from IPNS genes of the above streptomycete species were used to detect analogous genes in eight other strains that included both penicillin and cephalosporin producers and non-producers. Each producer strain responded with all three probes implying the presence of an IPNS gene. Surprisingly, several non-producer strains also responded with one or two of the probes. Our results suggest that IPNS-related genes may be more prevalent in Streptomyces than previously believed.  相似文献

Aim Climate and land‐use change will have a dramatic impact on future ecosystems through alterations to species ranges and community composition. When forming conservation strategies, correlative species distribution models are often created to assess risks for individual species. These models are based on the assumption of climatic equilibrium, such that the modern range is representative of the full range of conditions under which species could thrive. However, the palaeo‐ecological record illustrates examples of disequilibrium in species today, and recent studies suggest that many species could occur in much broader climatic settings than previously thought. Montane ecosystems are thought to be at disproportionate risk due to temperature sensitivity and restricted geographical ranges. However, in the Afrotropics the palaeo‐ecological record shows that montane forest taxa expanded into the lowlands numerous times, suggesting a possible tolerance to warm temperatures. Location Africa. Methods We integrate palaeo‐ecological and palaeo‐climatic data in order to compare climate conditions in which species are currently found with those in the past. We use species distribution models to construct potential modern ranges for Afromontane species based on modern distributions and distributions in the palaeo‐ecological record in order to evaluate the equilibrium of species ranges. Results We show that many Afromontane trees have occupied warmer climates in the past, which suggests that the current low‐elevation boundaries are not set by climate. Interestingly, the species with the largest disequilibrium between palaeo‐ and modern distributions are those whose modern distributions show the least temperature sensitivity. Mapping of species potential ranges based on modern and palaeo‐ distributions clearly shows that suitable climate conditions exist today in the lowlands for less temperature‐sensitive species. Main conclusions These results imply that the current range of these forest trees does not necessarily inform risk from climatic change, and that human land use may be the major pressure for many species in the future.  相似文献

The capacity of cell-free extracts of 2·5-day-old castor bean seedlings for synthesis of casbene from mevalonic acid were compared for seedings which had been germinated under sterile conditions and seedlings which were intentionally exposed to fungal cultures. Extracts from seedlings exposed to cultures of Rhizopus stolonifer, Aspergillus niger or Fusarium moniliforme produced much higher levels of casbene than extracts from sterile controls; the initial rates of casbene synthesis were 20–40 times higher in the extracts of seedlings that had been exposed to fungus. Although some variation in the capacity for synthesis of other diterpene hydrocarbons from mevalonic acid was seen in the two types of extracts, no consistent or striking stimulation in the synthesis of any of these was noted under these conditions of exposure of the seedlings to fungi. The potato-dectrose agar used as a fungal growth medium did not itself evoke the increase in casbene synthesis. Intact mycelia and cell-free extracts of mycelia of Rhizopus stolonifer gave no indication of diterpene biosynthesis from mevalonic acid. Purified casbene at concentrations of 10 μg ml−1 or greater retarded the development of A. niger on potato-dextrose medium. Casbene was also found to inhibit the endogenous and gibberellic acid-stimulated growth of leaf sheaths of the dwarf-5 mutant of Zea mays and of the growth of the K-12 strain of Escherichia coli on glucose-minerals medium. It is suggested that casbene may serve the castor bean plant as a phytoalexin.  相似文献

The 2 types of fruit (aerial and subterranean) borne by the dwarf desert annual Gymnarrhena micrantha were compared with regard to their responses to factors affecting their formation, dispersal, germination and seedling mortality. The 2 types of fruit differed markedly in several respects. In comparison with the subterranean fruits, the aerial ones are much smaller and more numerous, but the formation of the inflorescence in which they develop is more dependent on a favorable supply of soil moisture. The aerial fruits are dispersed by wind, after becoming detached by a complex series of hygroscopic movements which involve several organs and tissues, while the subterranean fruits never leave the dead parent plant, germinating right through its tissues. Germination of the subterranean fruits starts after a shorter incubation period and is less temperature-dependent in both light and dark. Light stimulated germination of both types of fruit, increasing their germination rates and final percentages, but not affecting the duration of the incubation period. In the subterranean fruits, the rate of germination was equally stimulated by light over the entire temperature range, with a well-defined optimum at 15 C in both light and dark. In the aerial fruits, the same optimum was found only in the light, rates in darkness increasing with decreasing temperatures. In the aerial fruits, alternations of light and dark were more favorable to germination than either continuous light or dark, the full effect being obtained with a single 8-hr or 16-hr light period, provided it was preceded by 16 or 8 hr of darkness, respectively. Similar reactions to combinations of light and dark were not observed in the subterranean fruits. Seedlings developing from the subterranean fruits were much larger, but grew at a relatively much slower rate than those from aerial fruits. The former were distinctly more tolerant of unfavorable soil-moisture regimes, such as low moisture supply and drought. It was concluded that the 2 types of fruit serve 2 distinct functions in the biology of the plant. The aerial fruits are adapted to the function of increasing the distribution of the species within suitable habitats, while the subterranean fruits are adapted to increasing the probability of the survival of the species.  相似文献
