Summary In the guinea-pig hypothalamus, a group of enkephalinergic cells forms a well-circumscribed nuclear area called the magnocellular dorsal nucleus (MDN). This nucleus gives rise to a prominent projection to the lateral spetum: the hypothalamo-septal enkephalinergic pathway. In the present study, MDN neurons visualized by Golgi impregnation were subjected to morphological analysis in order to define the potential segregation of cellular types within the MDN. This study was complemented by additional observations of MDN neurons intracellularly injected by Lucifer yellow (LY) or horseradish peroxidase (HRP) during the in vitro incubation of hypothalamic slices. The following results were obtained from the analysis of 200 neurons: 163 Golgi-impregnated cells plus 37 injected cells (LY=14; HRP=23). Thirteen HRP-injected cells were precisely located in the MDN and 10 were located in the perifornical area surrounding the MDN. Four different cellular types were identified. Type-I neurons (41%) displayed a globular perikaryon, a variable number of primary dendrites that were poorly ramified, no preferential orientation, and an axon emerging from the perikaryon. Type-II neurons (30.5%) had a triangular perikaryon, three well-ramified primary dendrites, an orientation perpendicular to the third ventricle, and an axon emerging from the perikaryon. Type-III neurons (22%) exhibited a spindle-shaped perikaryon, two opposed well-ramified primary dendrites, an orientation perpendicular to the third ventricle, and an axon emerging from a primary dendrite. Type-IV neurons (6.5%), showed a globular perikaryon, a variable number of primary dendrites, poorly ramified dendrites, an orientation parallel to the third ventricle, and an axon whose orientation could not be identified. Neurons labeled after intracellular injection belonged to the first three cellular types.  相似文献

In slices of guinea-pig brains, 36 neurons located in the mediolateral part of the lateral septum were stained intracellularly with horseradish peroxidase (n=28) or biocytin (n=8) after electrophysiological characterization. These neurons belonged to class A neurons (n=23), which generated pronounced Ca++-dependent high-threshold spikes in control medium, or to class C neurons (n=9), which were recognized by the occurrence of small-amplitude sodic spikes followed by slower larger calcic spikes. The present results demonstrate that, despite the variety of individual cell types, the major morphological population (30/36 cells) was composed of a homogeneous class of large-sized neurons that displayed thick primary dendrites and abundant dendritic appendages. The remaining 6 cells were small-sized, poorly-spiny neurons. Somatic spines were observed on 5 out of the 30 large cells and on one out of the six smaller cells. Labeled axons were mainly oriented to the anterior commissure. The axons of nine cells richly collateralized near the perikaryon. Ultrastructural examination of 3 horseradish peroxidase-injected cells showed indented nuclei, classic organelles and somatic spines. Terminal boutons established symmetric synapses with the injected cells. These results describe the morphological features of electrophysiologically identified neurons and indicate that class A and class C neurons are distributed among morphological populations differing in perikaryal size. This suggests that the different electrical properties of class A and class C neurons reflect recordings from different parts of the neuron rather than from neurons of different types. Furthermore, the present findings demonstrate that, in the guinea-pig, electrical and morphological characteristics of somatospiny neurons are comparable with those of non-somatospiny neurons. Somatospiny neurons have a recognized integrative role in the hippocampo-septo-hypothalamic complex.  相似文献

Several animal species have been shown to use phenotypic traitsto assess the competitive ability of opponents and adjust theiraggressiveness depending on the likelihood to win the contest.In birds, these phenotypic traits usually involve patches ofcolored feathers. The benefit to harbor honest signals of malequality is the avoidance of wasteful aggressive interactions.Recent work has shown that ultraviolet (UV) plumage reflectanceis an important signal used by females during mate choice. Surprisingly,however, the role of UV signaling on intrasexual selection hasbeen neglected. In the present study, we aimed to test whetherUV reflectance of crown feathers was used as a signal of malecompetitive ability during male-male interactions. Breedingmale blue tits (Parus caeruleus ultramarinus) were exposed duringthe female egg-laying period to blue tit taxidermic mounts witheither control or reduced UV reflectance of crown feathers.In agreement with the prediction that UV reflectance advertisesmale quality, we found that breeding blue tits behaved lessaggressively toward the UV-reduced decoy. To our knowledge,this is the first experimental evidence suggesting a role forUV signaling on intrasexual selection.  相似文献

Population trends are determined by gains through reproduction and immigration, and losses through mortality and emigration. These demographic quantities and resulting population dynamics are affected by different external and internal drivers. We examined how these demographic quantities were affected by weather, research-induced disturbance, local density, colony site and year in a metapopulation of 17 sociable weaver (Philetairus socius) colonies over 17 years of study (4 years for reproduction). Most colonies declined, but at different rates. The four demographic quantities were related to different drivers. Survival strongly varied among years and colonies and was positively related to rainfall and negatively related to extreme temperature (together explaining 30 % of variation) and disturbance (measured as number of captures conducted at a colony; 7 %). There was a trend for a positive relationship between reproduction and rainfall (50 %). Movement was mainly related to local density: individuals were more likely to emigrate from small to large colonies and from colonies that were either well below or above their long-term mean. They were more likely to immigrate into colonies that were nearby, and below their mean size. We then quantified the effects of these relationships on metapopulation dynamics using a multi-site matrix projection model. Rainfall was potentially a strong driver of metapopulation dynamics. In addition, field-work disturbance might have contributed to the decline of this metapopulation but could not explain its full magnitude. Hence, through a combination of analytical methods we were able to obtain information on the main drivers affecting dynamics in a declining metapopulation.  相似文献

Female ornamentation is frequently observed in animal species and is sometimes found as more evolutionary labile than male ornamentation. A complex array of factors may explain its presence and variation. Here we assessed the role of female cost of reproduction and paternal care. Both factors have been pinpointed as important by theoretical studies but have not been investigated yet in details at the interspecific level. We worked on 133 species of North temperate Passeriformes bird species for which both the clutch volume – here taken as the proxy of female cost of reproduction – and amount of paternal care are relatively well known. Using spectrometry, we measured the whole-body coloured plumage patches and quantified three metrics corresponding to brightness (i.e. achromatic component), colour chromaticity (i.e. intensity) and colour volume (i.e. diversity). We found a strong association between male and female colour metrics. Controlling for this association, we found additional small but detectable effects of both cost of reproduction and paternal care. First, females of species with more paternal care were slightly brighter. Second, the interaction between the level of paternal care and egg volume was correlated with female colour intensity: females with more paternal care were more chromatic, with this association mostly present when their investment in reproduction was low. Together these results suggest that female cost of reproduction and paternal care are part of the multiple factors explaining variation of female coloration, besides the strong covariation between male and female coloration.  相似文献

Social network analyses allow studying the processes underlying the associations between individuals and the consequences of those associations. Constructing and analyzing social networks can be challenging, especially when designing new studies as researchers are confronted with decisions about how to collect data and construct networks, and the answers are not always straightforward. The current lack of guidance on building a social network for a new study system might lead researchers to try several different methods and risk generating false results arising from multiple hypotheses testing. Here, we suggest an approach for making decisions when starting social network research in a new study system that avoids the pitfall of multiple hypotheses testing. We argue that best edge definition for a network is a decision that can be made using a priori knowledge about the species and that is independent from the hypotheses that the network will ultimately be used to evaluate. We illustrate this approach with a study conducted on a colonial cooperatively breeding bird, the sociable weaver. We first identified two ways of collecting data using different numbers of feeders and three ways to define associations among birds. We then evaluated which combination of data collection and association definition maximized (a) the assortment of individuals into previously known “breeding groups” (birds that contribute toward the same nest and maintain cohesion when foraging) and (b) socially differentiated relationships (more strong and weak relationships than expected by chance). This evaluation of different methods based on a priori knowledge of the study species can be implemented in a diverse array of study systems and makes the case for using existing, biologically meaningful knowledge about a system to help navigate the myriad of methodological decisions about data collection and network inference.  相似文献

The evolution of signals has mainly been considered in the contextof an emitter-receiver dyadic interaction. However, communicationusually occurs in the presence of individuals (an audience)that are not directly involved in the communication interaction,and it is more realistic to assume that signal evolution occursin a network. Several types of information could be available to an audience, and, therefore, the presence of an audiencecould have effects on the behavior of the communicating animalsand on signal evolution. We investigated whether the presenceof an audience of conspecifics affected intrasexual aggressivecommunication in male fighting fish. We found that if the audiencewas a female, males increased the intensity of conspicuous displays that can be used in communication with both males andfemales and decreased highly aggressive displays that are solelydirected to males. If the audience was a male of similar size,there was no significant change in the way in which males displayed.These results suggest that the presence of an audience couldbe one reason that many long-range and conspicuous signals are often shaped to transmit information to both males and females  相似文献
