Summary We compared the patch-choice performances of an ambush predator, the crab spider Misumena vatia (Thomisidae) hunting on common milkweed Asclepias syriaca (Asclepiadaceae) umbles, with two stochastic rule-of-thumb simulation models: one that employed a threshold giving-up time and one that assumed a fixed probability of moving. Adult female Misumena were placed on milkweed plants with three umbels, each with markedly different numbers of flower-seeking prey. Using a variety of visitation regimes derived from observed visitation patterns of insect prey, we found that decreases in among-umbel variance in visitation rates or increases in overall mean visitation rates reduced the clarity of the optimum (the difference in the yield obtained as foraging behavior changes), both locally and globally. Yield profiles from both models were extremely flat or jagged over a wide range of prey visitation regimes; thus, differences between optimal and next-best strategies differed only modestly over large parts of the foraging landscape. Although optimal yields from fixed probability simulations were one-third to one-half those obtained from threshold simulations, spiders appear to depart umbels in accordance with the fixed probability rule.  相似文献

The electrical properties of the frog taste cells during gustatory stimulations with distilled water and varying concentrations of NaCl were studied with intracellular microelectrodes. Under the Ringer adaptation of the tongue, two types of taste cells were distinguished by the gustatory stimuli. One type, termed NaCl-sensitive (NS) cells, responded to water with hyperpolarizations and responded to concentrated NaCl with depolarizations. In contrast, the other type of cells, termed water-sensitive (WS) cells, responded to water depolarizations and responded to concentrated NaCl with hyperpolarizations. The membrane resistance of both taste cell types increased during the hyperpolarizing receptor potentials and decreased during the depolarizing receptor potentials, Reversal potentials for the depolarizing and hyperpolarizing responses in each cell type were a few millivolts positive above the zero membrane potential. When the tongue was adapted with Na-free Ringer solution for 30 min, the amplitude of the depolarizing responses in the NS cells reduced to 50% of the control value under normal Ringer adaptation. On the basis of the present results, it is concluded (a) that the depolarizing responses of the NS and WS cells under the Ringer adaptation are produced by the permeability increase in some ions, mainly Na+ ions across the taste cell membranes, and (b) that the hyperpolarizing responses of both types of taste cells are produced by a decrease in the cell membrane permeability to some ions, probably Na+ ions, which is slightly enhanced during the Ringer adaptation.  相似文献

The deoxyribonucleic acid base composition (percent guanine + cytosine [GC]) was determined for 29 strains, representing 18 species of the genus Kluyveromyces. It was concluded that on the basis of GC content (47.4%) and other properties K. veronae occupies an uncertain position in the genus Kluyveromyces. The GC content of the remaining 17 species ranged from 35.3 to 43.4%, and three groups of species were recognized. The GC content of the first ranged from 35.3 to 38.0%; that of the second group from 39.5 to 41.7%; that of the third group from 42.4 to 43.4%. Several species revealed a nearly identical GC content. The GC contents do not correspond in all instances with the five groups of species proposed by van der Walt.  相似文献

The development of Sarcocystis cruzi Hasselmann (syn. S. fusiformis Railliet) meronts was studied in seven 7- to 10-day-old calves filled 4, 7, 11, 15, 22, 25 and 28 days postinoculation (DPI) with 5 x 10(7) sporocysts from feces of coyotes. No meronts were found 4 and 7 DPI. Young and intermediate meronts with 1-16 nuclei were found in endothelial cells of arteries in mesenteric lymph nodes, but not in kidneys 11 DPI. Mature meronts were noted in endothelial cells of arteries, arterioles, or capillaries of many organs of calves killed 15 to 25 DPI. No first-generation meronts were found 28 DPI. By electron microscopy, all stages of the first-generation merogony were found free within the host cell cytoplasm and not within a parasitophorous vacuole. The appearance of intranuclear spindles preceded the formation of merozoites by endopolygeny. Mature meronts measured 41.0 x 17.5 (34-50 x 15-24) microgram, contained approximately 100-350 merozoites, and had 2 to 4 relatively small residual bodies, 2.8 microgram in diameter. Merozoites measured 6.3 x 1.5 (5.5-7 x 1 microgram) and contained most of the organelles characteristically found in coccidian merozoites. Micropores were observed in merozoites, but not in young and intermediate meronts. Merozoites were seen free in the lumen of blood vessels, in intracellular areas, and free within the host cell cytoplasm.  相似文献

Douglasia idahoensis, a new species endemic to Idaho and Valley counties, Idaho, a close relative of D. montana, is characterized by its succulent foliage, several-flowered umbels, 5–9 lanceolate bracts, short peduncles, and allopatric distribution. Chromosome number is reported as n = 18. Previous taxonomic works have included this species either with D. montana or with D. laevigata.  相似文献

Three DNA buoyant density species (nuclear, 1.692 g cm−3; mitochondria 1.705 g cm−3; and proplastid, 1.713 g cm−3) can be detected in extracts from castor bean endosperm. No other buoyant density species can be identified. DNA extracts from sucrose density gradient purified glyoxysomes exhibit varying amounts of each of the three identified DNAs but no other distinguishable DNA species. RNA synthesized in vitro by Escherichia coli RNA polymerase using purified castor bean nuclear DNA as a template, hybridizes equally well with its template and with the 1.692 g cm−3 species from glyoxysome fractions. These results are discussed in terms of their relevance to microbody biogenesis.  相似文献

Mouse t haplotypes are variant forms of chromosome 17 that exist at high frequencies in worldwide populations of two species of commensal mice. To determine both the relationship of t haplotypes to each other and the species within which they exist, 35 representative t haplotypes were analyzed by means of 10 independent molecular probes, including five DNA clones and five polypeptide spots identified by means of two- dimensional gel electrophoresis. All of the tested haplotypes were found to share restriction fragments and polypeptide spots that are absent in mice carrying wild-type forms of chromosome 17. This observation provides the first direct evidence that all of the known t haplotypes are descendents of a single ancestral chromosome. The absence of variation among t haplotypes could mean that this ancestral chromosome existed relatively recently, in which case it would be necessary to postulate introgressions of t haplotypes across species lines to explain their presence in both Mus domesticus and M. musculus. Alternatively, it is possible that the ancestral chromosome existed prior to the split between M. domesticus and M. musculus and that, by chance, our probes fail to detect polymorphisms that exist among the t haplotypes. A further result of our analysis is the characterization of a partial t haplotype in a wild population of Israeli mice.   相似文献

The molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of expression of the rat CRH gene have been examined in rat pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells transiently transfected with a chimeric gene containing 1.4 kilobases of rat CRH 5'-flanking DNA fused to the bacterial reporter gene encoding chloramphenicol acetyltransferase. Cyclic AMP analogs and activators of adenylate cyclase positively regulate the expression of this chimeric gene in PC-12 cells, inducing chloramphenicol acetyltransferase activity more than 15-fold. The DNA sequence required for this response to cAMP has been localized to a 59 base pair region located between 238 and 180 base pairs 5' to the putative CRH mRNA cap site. This sequence can confer cAMP-responsiveness on a heterologous promoter in an orientation independent fashion and has homology to cAMP regulatory regions from a number of other eukaryotic genes.  相似文献
