In greenhouse and field experiments, an invert emulsion (MSG 8.25) was tested with dried, formulated spores of the bioherbicidal fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. aeschynomene, a highly virulent pathogen of the leguminous weed Aeschynomene virginica (northern jointvetch), but considered ‘immune’ against another more serious leguminous weed, Sesbania exaltata (hemp sesbania). A 1:1 (v/v) fungus/invert emulsion mixture resulted in 100% infection and mortality of inoculated hemp sesbania seedlings over a 21-day period under greenhouse conditions. In replicated field tests of the fungus/invert formulation conducted in Stuttgart, AR, and Stoneville, MS, hemp sesbania was controlled 85 and 90%, respectively. These results suggest that this invert emulsion expands the host range of C. gloeosporioides f. sp. aeschynomene, with a concomitant improvement of the bioherbicidal potential of this pathogen.  相似文献

Plant species composition, dominance, richness, and diversity were measured across a 15-year chronosequence of created wetland sites in Virginia, USA. Using an age-class categorization (1?C2?years, 3?C5?years, 6?C10?years, or 11?C15?years), all classes had a predominance of herbaceous species with perennial life history strategy, and perennials contributed 68.6?% to the overall dominance measure (importance value; IV) averaged across all sites. There was no significant difference in species richness or diversity among age classes. Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) indicated that herbaceous species composition was similar between the youngest and oldest age classes, but not the intermediate classes. For woody shrubs and saplings, planted species were more prevalent in the youngest age classes, and volunteer species predominated in the oldest age classes. These results suggest that perennial herbaceous species are important in early plant development on created wetland sites, and may be influential in observed patterns of species composition over time. In the context of plant development in newly created wetlands, dominance shifts from planted to volunteer woody species suggest that planting early successional species, or species with reproductive strategies attuned to created wetland site management, may favor survivorship and recruitment of other species over time.  相似文献

The Gymnogongrus devoniensis (Greville) Schotter complex in the North Atlantic Ocean was elucidated by comparative molecular, morphological, and culture studies. Restriction fragment length patterns and hybridization data on organellar DNA revealed two distinct taxa in samples from Europe and eastern Canada. Nucleotide sequences for the intergenic spacer between the large and small subunit genes of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), and the adjoining regions of both genes, differed by 12.5–13.4% between the two taxa. One of the taxa, which included material from the type locality of G. devoniensis at Torbay, Devon, England, was taken to represent authentic G. devoniensis. Within this taxon, samples from Ireland, England, northern France, northern Spain, and southern Portugal showed great morphological variation, particularly in habit, but their Rubisco spacer sequences were identical or differed by only a single nucleotide. Constant morphological features included the development, from a single auxiliary cell, of the spherical cystocarp with a thick mucilage sheath that appears to be typical of Gymnogongrus species with internal cystocarps. Two life-history types were found. Northern isolates underwent a direct-type life history, recycling apomictic females by carpospores, whereas the Portuguese isolate followed a heteromorphic life history in which carpospores gave rise to a crustose tetrasporophyte. The second group of samples, from Nova Scotia and Northern Ireland, provisionally referred to as Gymnogongrus sp., showed little morphological variation. The life history in both areas consists of apomictically reproducing diploid female gametophytes and diploid crustose bisporophytes and tetrasporophytes. Rubisco spacer sequences of the samples were identical, and the plasmid previously described in the Nova Scotian samples was also present in the Northern Ireland population. This species is widely distributed in the western Atlantic, from Newfoundland to Massachusetts. In Europe, gametophytes are known only at one site, but crusts are distributed from Denmark, Scotland (and probably Norway) to France. It is very likely that this species was introduced from one side of the North Atlantic to the other by shipping during the early nineteenth century. Several morphological features are unusual within the genus but are shared with G. leptophyllus J. Agardh from the eastern Pacific Ocean, and further work is necessary to determine whether Gymnogongrus sp. and G. leptophyllus are conspecific.  相似文献

The Role of Half-Transporters in Multidrug Resistance   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
ATP-binding cassette proteins comprise a superfamily of transporter proteins, a subset of which have been implicated in multidrug resistance. Although P-glycoprotein was described over 15 years ago, the recent expansion in the number of transporters identified has prompted renewed interest in the role of drug transporters in clinical drug resistance. These newly identified transporters include additional members of the MRP family, ABC2, and a new half-transporter, MXR/BCRP/ABCP1. This half-transporter confers high levels of resistance to mitoxantrone, anthracyclines, and the camptothecins SN-38 and topotecan. At 72 kDa, MXR localizes to the plasma membrane in cells which highly overexpress the protein either through gene amplification or though gene rearrangement. Future studies will be aimed at identifying an inhibitor, and attempting to translate recognition of this new transporter into a target for anticancer treatment.  相似文献

Homogeneous cytochrome b5 from human erythrocytes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Homogeneous cytochrome b5 has been isolated from large volumes of human erythrocytes by sequential chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, Amberlite CG-50, Bio-Gel P-60, and DEAE-Sephadex A-50. A molecular weight of 15,300 was determined by SDS disc gel electrophoresis. Trypsin converted the protein to a smaller hemepeptide which was indistinguishable from trypsin-cytochrome b5 of human liver microsomes by disc gel electrophoresis. The data suggest that erythrocyte cytochrome b5 has the same structure as a segment of liver microsomal cytochrome b5 and is intermediate in size between the trypsin- and detergent-solubilized forms of the liver protein.  相似文献
