Groups of female rats were treated either on the day of birth or at 5 days of age with oil, testosterone propionate (TP), MER-25 (an oestrogen antagonist) or TP plus MER-25. Treatment with oil and MER-25 alone on day 1 or 5 did not prevent the development of cyclic repro ductive activity in any of the females. Administration of TP on the day of birth inhibited vaginal opening and prevented cyclic ovarian activity. Treatment with TP on day 5 significantly advanced the time of vaginal opening but prevented both vaginal and ovarian cyclicity. Treatment on the day of birth with a combination of MER-25 and TP did not significantly prevent the masculinizing action of TP. In most cases vaginal opening failed to occur; the ovaries were small and devoid of corpora lutea. Sexual receptivity was not significantly affected by treatment on the day of birth with oil, TP or MER-25 alone. When MER-25 was given before the TP, however, receptivity was significantly enhanced compared with oil treatment. At 5 days of age treatment with MER-25 plus TP prevented the masculinizing action of TP. Most of the animals had normal ovarian weights, and ovaries which contained both follicles and corpora lutea. The most effective treatment for preventing the action of TP was administration of MER-25 6 h before the injection of androgen. After treatment at 5 days of age, sexual receptivity was significantly reduced in all groups compared with the oil-treated animals. Administration of MER-25 plus TP did not enhance sexual receptivity above that found in the animals receiving TP alone. The results are discussed in terms of the possible role of oestrogen in controlling hypothalamic differentiation in the neonatal female rat.  相似文献

1. The flagellated alga, Euglena gracilis, swims forward essentially in a straight path under constant light intensity. Strong motility of the cells can be supported by Mg2+ alone but optimum motility is found in the presence of Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+. 2. Ca2+, Co2+, Mn2+ and Ba2+ induce a concentration-dependent increase in the rate at which the cells change the direction of their swimming path (a klinokinesis). Ni2+ immobilizes the flagellum. 3. On perception of a reduction ('step-down stimulus') in blue light intensity in their environment, Euglena rotate in place (tumble) for a finite period (the step-down photophobic response). 4. The duration of the tumbling is enhanced in the presence of divalent cations following the series Ca2+ greater than Ba2+ greater than Mn2+ greater than Co2+ greater than Mg2+ = Ni2+ = 0. 5. Neither the tumbling response in the presence of low concentrations of Ca2+ or the Ca2+-stimulated response is altered by verapamil (a Ca2+ conductance antagonist). The Ca2+ conductance/active transport antagonist, ruthenium red, is also inactive. 6. The Ca2+ ionophore, A23187, has little effect on flagellar activity in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. However, in the presence of A23187, Ca2+ induces a specific light-independent, concentration-dependent discontinuous tumbling response of the cells. 7. The data support a role for Ca2+ and Mg2+ in control of flagellar activity. However, blue light-induced tumbling behavior would not appear to be the direct result of a light-mediated alteration in the Ca2+ conductance of the flagellar membrane to affect flagellar reorientation. The results are discussed in connection with previous theories on control of flagella activity in green alga.  相似文献

Progestin hormones exert rapid, nongenomic actions on a variety of target tissues in fish. The induction of oocyte maturation and the progestin membrane receptor (mPR) that mediates this action of progestins have been well characterized in fishes. Progestins also act on Atlantic croaker spermatozoa via an mPR to rapidly increase sperm motility. Preliminary results indicate that progestins can also exert rapid actions in the preoptic anterior hypothalamus (POAH) in this species to down-regulate gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Recently, we reported the cloning, sequencing and characterization of a novel cDNA in a closely related species, spotted seatrout, that has the characteristics of the mPR involved in the progestin induction of oocyte maturation. Three distinct mPR subtypes, named alpha, beta, and gamma, have been identified in both fishes and mammals. The tissue distribution of the mPRalpha protein in seatrout suggests the alpha-subtype mediates progestin actions on GnRH secretion, sperm motility and oocyte maturation. However, mPRbeta antisense experiments in zebrafish oocytes suggest the beta-subtype also participates in the control of oocyte maturation in zebrafish.  相似文献

To examine superstitious responding, four pigeons key pecked under multiple concurrent variable-interval 45 s variable-interval 90 s concurrent variable-interval 90 s variable-interval 180 s schedules in the absence of a changeover delay. The two variable-interval 90 s schedules then were replaced by extinction, and key-peck responding during extinction was examined as a function of the prevailing reinforcement rate. During the first several sessions, extinction-key responding was maintained closer to baseline levels in the presence of the higher reinforcement rate, and this effect dissipated or even reversed with continued exposure to extinction. Although extinction-key responding generally decreased to near-zero levels after several sessions, in a few instances, it continued for 30 and 45 sessions. These results demonstrate how concurrent variable-interval extinction schedules can be used to investigate what often has been labeled superstitious responding.  相似文献

There is a paucity of research on intra-specific morphological and genetic diversity in Australian arid-zone reptiles, and a number of Australian reptile species have for many years been regarded as "species complexes" that classical morphological analyses could not resolve. We conducted a phylogenetic and phylogeographic study of a widespread species group of Australian geckonid lizards to address two main aims. First, based on a large mitochondrial and nuclear gene data set, we have generated the first molecular phylogeny for the Diplodactylus stenodactylus species group (D. alboguttatus, D. damaeus, D. maini, and D. squarrosus, D. stenodactylus) and multiple outgroups to examine the evolutionary relationships among these arid-zone species and phylogenetic patterns within some species. The edited alignment of 41 individuals comprises 2485 characters (1163 ND2+tRNAs; 490 16s; 832 RAG-1), and of these 717 (29%) were variable and parsimony informative (568 ND2+tRNAs; 89 16s; 60 RAG-1). This broad-scale, multi-gene phylogeny has supported previous conjectures on the higher-level phylogenetic relationships among members of the D. stenodactylus species-group based on morphology, but also has uncovered hidden diversity within the group with two new species identified. Analysis at this broad level has identified patterns associated with the distribution of the D. stenodactylus species group that appear to be influenced by environmental processes operating at large geographic scales. Two major clades within the species group were associated with broad differences in habitat types, with one group largely restricted to the temperate zone of the Southwest Province and another largely restricted to central and northern Western Australia north of Kalgoorlie, in line with the Eremaean Province of the Eremaean Zone and the Northern Province of the Tropical Zone. Second, we have assembled phylogeographic data based on a mitochondrial gene (ND2+tRNAs) for five species (Rhynchoedura ornata, Diplodactylus maini, D. pulcher, D. squarrosus, D. stenodactylus) where larger sampling is available, with particular focus on D. stenodactylus, which is distributed both in the iconic but little-known Pilbara area of endemism in north-western Australia as well as in other parts of the Australian arid zone. The edited alignment of 95 individuals comprises 1142 characters and of these 601 (53%) are variable and parsimony informative. We found significant intra-specific genetic variation in all five species, highlighting the need for large-scale screening of cryptic species, with sampling specifically targeted at determining the geographic limits of such taxa. In particular, within D. stenodactylus, a deep and ancient phylogenetic split distinguishes populations in the Pilbara region from non-Pilbara populations. This split may be the result of broad differences in underlying geological substrate, with the Pilbara clade generally preferring harder soils and the non-Pilbara clade adapted to sand.  相似文献

Animals translocate nutrients by consuming nutrients at one point and excreting them or dying at another location. Such lateral fluxes may be an important mechanism of nutrient supply in many ecosystems, but lack quantification and a systematic theoretical framework for their evaluation. This paper presents a mathematical framework for quantifying such fluxes in the context of mammalian herbivores. We develop an expression for lateral diffusion of a nutrient, where the diffusivity is a biologically determined parameter depending on the characteristics of mammals occupying the domain, including size-dependent phenomena such as day range, metabolic demand, food passage time, and population size. Three findings stand out: (a) Scaling law-derived estimates of diffusion parameters are comparable to estimates calculated from estimates of each coefficient gathered from primary literature. (b) The diffusion term due to transport of nutrients in dung is orders of magnitude large than the coefficient representing nutrients in bodymass. (c) The scaling coefficients show that large herbivores make a disproportionate contribution to lateral nutrient transfer. We apply the diffusion equation to a case study of Kruger National Park to estimate the conditions under which mammal-driven nutrient transport is comparable in magnitude to other (abiotic) nutrient fluxes (inputs and losses). Finally, a global analysis of mammalian herbivore transport is presented, using a comprehensive database of contemporary animal distributions. We show that continents vary greatly in terms of the importance of animal-driven nutrient fluxes, and also that perturbations to nutrient cycles are potentially quite large if threatened large herbivores are driven to extinction.  相似文献

Aim We analysed lake‐sediment pollen records from eight sites in southern New England to address: (1) regional variation in ecological responses to post‐glacial climatic changes, (2) landscape‐scale vegetational heterogeneity at different times in the past, and (3) environmental and ecological controls on spatial patterns of vegetation. Location The eight study sites are located in southern New England in the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The sites span a climatic and vegetational gradient from the lowland areas of eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut to the uplands of north‐central and western Massachusetts. Tsuga canadensis and Fagus grandifolia are abundant in the upland area, while Quercus, Carya and Pinus species have higher abundances in the lowlands. Methods We collected sediment cores from three lakes in eastern and north‐central Massachusetts (Berry East, Blood and Little Royalston Ponds). Pollen records from those sites were compared with previously published pollen data from five other sites. Multivariate data analysis (non‐metric multi‐dimensional scaling) was used to compare the pollen spectra of these sites through time. Results Our analyses revealed a sequence of vegetational responses to climate changes occurring across southern New England during the past 14,000 calibrated radiocarbon years before present (cal yr bp ). Pollen assemblages at all sites were dominated by Picea and Pinus banksiana between 14,000 and 11,500 cal yr bp ; by Pinus strobus from 11,500 to 10,500 cal yr bp ; and by P. strobus and Tsuga between 10,500 and 9500 cal yr bp . At 9500–8000 cal yr bp , however, vegetation composition began to differentiate between lowland and upland sites. Lowland sites had higher percentages of Quercus pollen, whereas Tsuga abundance was higher at the upland sites. This spatial heterogeneity strengthened between 8000 and 5500 cal yr bp , when Fagus became abundant in the uplands and Quercus pollen percentages increased further in the lowland records. The differentiation of upland and lowland vegetation zones remained strong during the mid‐Holocene Tsuga decline (5500–3500 cal yr bp ), but the pattern weakened during the late‐Holocene (3500–300 cal yr bp ) and European‐settlement intervals. Within‐group similarity declined in response to the uneven late‐Holocene expansion of Castanea, while between‐group similarity increased due to homogenization of the regional vegetation by forest clearance and ongoing disturbances. Main conclusions The regional gradient of vegetation composition across southern New England was first established between 9500 and 8000 cal yr bp . The spatial heterogeneity of the vegetation may have arisen at that time in response to the development or strengthening of the regional climatic gradient. Alternatively, the differentiation of upland and lowland vegetation types may have occurred as the climate ameliorated and an increasing number of species arrived in the region, arranging themselves in progressively more complex vegetation patterns across relatively stationary environmental gradients. The emergence of a regional vegetational gradient in southern New England may be a manifestation of the increasing number of species and more finely divided resource gradient.  相似文献
