Recent studies suggest that individuals with better problem‐solving and/or learning performance have greater reproductive success, and that individuals may thus benefit from choosing mates based on these performances. However, directly assessing these performances in candidate mates could be difficult. Instead, the use of indirect cues related to problem‐solving and/or learning performance, such as condition‐dependent phenotypic traits, might be favored. We investigated whether problem‐solving and learning performance on a novel non‐foraging task correlated with sexually selected plumage colouration in a natural population of great tits Parus major. We found that males successful in solving the task had darker blue‐black crowns than non‐solvers, and that males solving the task more rapidly over multiple attempts (i.e. learners) exhibited blue‐black crowns with higher UV chroma and shorter‐wavelength hues than non‐learners. In contrast, we found no link between behavioural performance on the task and the yellow breast colouration in either sex. Our findings suggest that blue‐black crown colouration could serve as a signal of problem‐solving and learning performance in wild great tit males. Further research remains necessary to determine whether different sexually selected traits are used to signal cognitive performance for mate choice, either directly (i.e. cognitive performance influencing individual's health and ornamentation through diet for example) or indirectly (i.e. due to a correlation with a third factor such as individual quality or condition).  相似文献

Conformational flexibility between structural ensembles is an essential component of enzyme function. Although the broad dynamical landscape of proteins is known to promote a number of functional events on multiple time scales, it is yet unknown whether structural and functional enzyme homologues rely on the same concerted residue motions to perform their catalytic function. It is hypothesized that networks of contiguous and flexible residue motions occurring on the biologically relevant millisecond time scale evolved to promote and/or preserve optimal enzyme catalysis. In this study, we use a combination of NMR relaxation dispersion, model-free analysis, and ligand titration experiments to successfully capture and compare the role of conformational flexibility between two structural homologues of the pancreatic ribonuclease family: RNase A and eosinophil cationic protein (or RNase 3). In addition to conserving the same catalytic residues and structural fold, both homologues show similar yet functionally distinct clusters of millisecond dynamics, suggesting that conformational flexibility can be conserved among analogous protein folds displaying low sequence identity. Our work shows that the reduced conformational flexibility of eosinophil cationic protein can be dynamically and functionally reproduced in the RNase A scaffold upon creation of a chimeric hybrid between the two proteins. These results support the hypothesis that conformational flexibility is partly required for catalytic function in homologous enzyme folds, further highlighting the importance of dynamic residue sectors in the structural organization of proteins.  相似文献

Background  

The mosquito A. aegypti is vector of dengue and other viruses. New methods of vector control are needed and can be achieved by a better understanding of the life cycle of this insect. Embryogenesis is a part of A. aegypty life cycle that is poorly understood. In insects in general and in mosquitoes in particular energetic metabolism is well studied during oogenesis, when the oocyte exhibits fast growth, accumulating carbohydrates, lipids and proteins that will meet the regulatory and metabolic needs of the developing embryo. On the other hand, events related with energetic metabolism during A. aegypti embryogenesis are unknown.  相似文献

Protein design is currently used for the creation of new proteins with desirable traits. In our lab, we focus on the synthesis of proteins with high essential amino acid content, having potential application in animal nutrition. One of the limitations we face in this endeavor is the achievement of stable proteins in spite of a highly biased amino acid content. We report here the synthesis and characterization of MB-1Trp, a protein with a tailored content in selected essential amino acids. The protein is a Tyr62-Trp mutant of the parent molecule MB-1 described earlier. The new protein is largely helical as per design, is well folded, and has a melting temperature of 55 degrees C. Its resistance to proteolytic degradation compares to that of cytochrome c, a protein of similar size. Design strategy used for MB-1Trp is discussed with regards to its applicability toward the creation of efficient nutritional proteins.  相似文献

High-throughput SNP genotyping on universal bead arrays   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16  
We have developed a flexible, accurate and highly multiplexed SNP genotyping assay for high-throughput genetic analysis of large populations on a bead array platform. The novel genotyping system combines high assay conversion rate and data quality with >1500 multiplexing, and Array of Arrays formats. Genotyping assay oligos corresponding to specific SNP sequences are each linked to a unique sequence (address) that can hybridize to its complementary strand on universal arrays. The arrays are made of beads located in microwells of optical fiber bundles (Sentrix Array Matrix) or silicon slides (Sentrix BeadChip). The optical fiber bundles are further organized into a matrix that matches a 96-well microtiter plate. The arrays on the silicon slides are multi-channel pipette compatible for loading multiple samples onto a single silicon slide. These formats allow many samples to be processed in parallel. This genotyping system enables investigators to generate approximately 300,000 genotypes per day with minimal equipment requirements and greater than 1.6 million genotypes per day in a robotics-assisted process. With a streamlined and comprehensive assay, this system brings a new level of flexibility, throughput, and affordability to genetic research.  相似文献

Pericopsis elata (Fabaceae) is a tall tree of high commercial value of the moist semi‐deciduous African forests. As a result of decades of logging it is now considered as threatened and listed on the IUCN Red List and CITES Appendix II, even though essential biological parameters controlling its population dynamics remain unknown. This study aims at improving the knowledge of the species' ecological parameters, and at assessing the impact of selective logging on its populations in an 118,052 ha forest in Cameroon. After inventorying the species in 1432 ha, mortality and growth were assessed over continuous 5‐ and 2‐yr periods in unlogged and logged areas, respectively. Phenology was monitored in the unlogged forest during 5 yr. The population structure shows high relative abundance of trees in medium size categories. Mean annual diameter increments in both environments did not differ significantly between unlogged and logged areas. P. elata is a deciduous species that flowers at the end of the main dry season. The minimum reproduction and effective flowering diameters were 32 and 37 cm, respectively. Fruit maturation took place during 7 mo. With a minimum logging diameter of 90 cm, the recovery rate computed over a 30‐yr period was > 100 percent. Selective logging harvested only 12.1 percent of the total number of seed trees and had little influence on the species' biological parameters. Securing sufficient regeneration as a post‐logging action is probably the most important consideration for achieving long‐term sustainability.  相似文献
