Twelve of 24 monospecific caprine reagents produced by absorption of alloimmune antisera identified a complex blood group system of goats which was designated B, based on the results of a small comparison test with ovine reagents. The frequencies of the 12 B factors differed significantly among the Australian Angora, Texan Angora, Cashmere, and Dairy goat breeds. Three of the antigens detected by the reagents were shown to be related as linear subtypes, designated Ba1, Ba2, and Ba3, and inherited as alleles. The segregations of B factors in 80 sire groups involving 1086 offspring demonstrated that groups of B factors (phenogroups) segregated as products of allelic genes. OBJECTIVES--To determine whether variations in the expression of tumour related antigens can predict the origin of tumours. DESIGN--Immunohistological study of tumour marker expression in primary adenocarcinomas and respective metastatic deposits. Antibodies to the following tumour markers were used: polymorphic epithelial mucin (NCRC-11 and SM3), carcinoembryonic antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen with non-specific antigen co-specificity, CA125, CA19.9, prostate specific antigens, and thyroglobulin. SETTING--Histopathology department of teaching hospital. SUBJECTS--100 pathology sections of metastatic adenocarcinoma and their related primary tumours. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Concordance of reactivity between primary and metastatic tumours. Reactivity profiles of tumour sites. RESULTS--The correct primary site of origin was predicted in 70% (33/47) of tumours in men and 54% (27/43) tumours in women with antibodies SM3, 288, CA19.9, CA125, and PSA (men only). Specificities ranged from 68% for breast tumour to 98% for prostate tumour. CONCLUSION--Use of tumour markers in patients presenting with metastatic adenocarcinoma of unknown origin can help localise the probable primary sites and reduce the need for extensive and expensive imaging techniques.  相似文献

Because a male/female resource tradeoff is a basic assumption of many models of sex allocation in cosexual plants, statistical and manipulative methods were used to look for evidence of intersexual resource conflicts in Zizania palustris. In this monoecious grass, male and female investments overlap in time within each panicle and on successive panicles, and sex allocation quickly responds to environmental changes. Nevertheless, no negative correlations were found between the numbers of florets of each sex within panicles, on consecutive panicles, or on whole plants. Removing immature fruits or florets of either sex did not significantly increase subsequent investment in the other sex. The one significant tradeoff was slightly lower total fruit production on plants with exceptionally large male investment. Wild rice, therefore, fits the tradeoff assumption of sex allocation models at the population level but rarely at the individual level.  相似文献

Kinetic analyses indicate that members of natural bacterial populations from 2 marine environments near Woods Hole, MA, possess enzyme-mediated transport systems which permit utilization of14C-labeled extracellular organic C (14C-EOC) prepared from the algae,Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, andDunaliella tertiolecta, and supplied over a concentration range of 15–150C·liter–1. It is shown that previous exposure of the bacteria to the EOC from these algae cannot explain the linear kinetic patterns obtained. Therefore, the ability to utilize algal EOC at low concentrations is a general feature of metabolically active bacterial populations. Further, as the native bacteria do not restrict this ability to a specific EOC pool, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that bacteria adapted to low nutrient environments possess uptake systems of high substrate affinity and low substrate specificity. Elevation of substrate levels with as little as 10 mg·1–1 peptone is shown to favor development of a bacterial population that lacks these adaptations. A theory is developed for the aggregation rate of cells in uniform shear flow when the cell-cell adhesion is mediated by bonds between specific molecules on the cell surfaces such as antigen and antibody or lectin and carbohydrate. The theory is based on estimates of the frequency and duration of cell-cell collisions and of the number of bonds formed and required to hold the cells together. For high shear rates, the sticking probability is a function of a single dimensionless parameter, A, that is proportional to G-2, with G the shear rate. For low shear rates, the sticking probability is a function of a second dimensionless parameter, A' proportional to G-1. In either case the rate of cell-cell sticking is a maximum when A (or A') congruent to 1.0. For small values of A (or A') the cells collide frequently, but do not stick, whereas for large values of A (or A') the cells collide infrequently, but stick with larger probability. Studies in Couette viscometer or other flow having approximately uniform shear can test these models.  相似文献

The heterotrophic bacterial populations in two contrasting rivers have been examined over a period of 1 year. The populations were analyzed (i) as total heterotrophic counts, (ii) as species numbers, using numerical taxonomy, (iii) by diversity indices, and (iv) by factor analysis. Isolates were obtained by plating directly from water samples and by chemostat enrichment. Four factors emerged which profiled the bacterial community and were common to both rivers. They were, in order of decreasing importance, fermentative metabolism, inorganic nitrogen metabolism, fluorescence-oxidative metabolism, and lack of starch hydrolysis. Several factors produced significant correlations with a range of physicochemical parameters, which were also measured. The correlations suggested an intricate algal-bacterial interaction. The oxidative metabolism factor correlated with rainfall in one river, suggesting that the oxidative bacteria may be washed in from the surrounding land. In the other river, the oxidative-fermentative factor correlated negatively with sunshine. Factor analysis was the most effective method for revealing correlations between bacterial characteristics and the environmental parameters; however, the use of a variety of methods provided more insight into the ecological aspects.  相似文献
